Why People Become Overweight The main purpose of consuming food is to live. A variety of food is getting into our stomach for various purposes. Our body will use protein in the food to regenerate lean tissue and will convert carbohydrate into energy or fat to protect organs. Any surplus of food that is not used by the body will be converted into extra fat that will be placed in places like liver cells, muscle cells and heart cells. Overweight and obesity are not just the problem for high-income countries but also have become an issue for low- and middle-income countries. People often try to lose weight by not eating and in turn slow down their metabolism so consuming even less calories causes them to get even fatter. What to do if you Don’t want to Get Fat If consuming large meals and eating too much has been an issue for you the first step is to identify the reason why you are overeating. Are you letting your emotions control your actions? Are the people who surround you a bad influence on you? Are you eating at restaurants which serve excessively large portions? Whatever the reason for consuming large meals is, you simply need to exercise portion control. Whether it is by choosing healthier, more satiating foods or simply only eating 1/2 of the high calorie meals, eating less is ultimately going to determine whether you are going to stay in shape, lose weight, get fat or get fatter. In the first article “Resisting the Moralization of Eating”, by Mary Maxfeild she ¬argues many things against the other author Michael Pollan about how we need to change how the American people eat, and how the government needs to handle obesity better in the United States. This portrays to the other article “Escape from the Western Diet” by Michael Pollan in many ways, as well as many challenges. “The challenge we face today is figuring out how to escape the worst elements of the Western diet and lifestyle without going back to the bush” (Pollan 437). In this paper I will go over many subtopics including: Obesity, health, and food.
Each year, there are about 112,000 deaths from obesity that are preventable. In the past few decades, the number of cases of obesity has been on the rise in the United States. It has tripled among children and doubled among adults. In 1990, Connecticut’s obesity rate was at 10.4 percent. Then, in 2000, it was at 16.0 percent and currently it’s at 26.0 percent.
Saletan gives more than enough information on how, when, and what is happening worldwide about obesity. Although he does not give a solution, he still made an eye opening experience while reading this essay. Obesity is now happening worldwide. Yes I said it, worldwide according to Saletan. “Egyptian, Mexican, and South African women are as fat as American”, he claims in the second paragraph.
“New York City’s Board of Health today passed a rule banning super-sized drinks at restaurants, concession stands and other eateries.” (Doc A). Individuals in the United States are overweight because they do not know how to limit themselves. If the government were to control one of the main reasons people are obese, then several people would not be overweight because the government would take care of the problem. Banning sugary drinks over 16-ounces would help people lower their sugar intake, which would help people stay in excellent health.
