Addictive Substances: Cigarettes The question at issue in this paper is: Why do people smoke cigarettes? And what are the different side effects of smoking. Unfortunately, one in every three adult is a regular cigarette smoker according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Cited below are some main reasons on why adults smoke:
• Adults experience greater amount of stress and pressure because of personal problem matters
• Adults smoke because it gives pleasure and relaxation
• To have energy when going through a hard time
The above mentioned reasons on why adults smoke cigarettes is because smoking cigarettes can give relaxation and reduce the stress that they are experiencing for only a short amount of time. Adults tend to depend on smoking for them to be relieved of a burden they feel or to be able to function properly thus becoming addicted to cigarettes. If a person depends to smoking for a reason, he or she would have a hard time to quit smoking especially if the person has been smoking for a long time. When the time comes wherein a person wants to quit smoking especially because they have already felt the side effects of smoking, he or she would find it very hard since the longer a person smokes the more addictive cigarettes become. Since 1 out of 3 adults are regular cigarette smokers, it means that a person that enters a new group of circle may have a lot of chance wherein he or she may encounter a lot of people that smokes cigarettes and somehow be influenced by it. It commonly occurs with young teenagers since it is the time wherein a person is trying to find its own personality. Also in adults, having a group of friends that smokes cigarettes can be easily influential since a person would feel left out if he or she is not doing the same things that his/her friends is doing and thus the feeling of lack of
