Position Paper In today’s society, media has a large influence on the public. Television, newspapers, and magazines all work together to sway the opinions of people and help them form the way they see the world. One of the problems with media influencing personal opinions includes stereotyping, especially regarding gender. How media depicts genders controls the way society evolves. The way women are portrayed in media today is not helping their advancement. Media, specifically advertising, photoshops women and bends the reality of their real appearance, causing girls to form self-esteem issues. An example of women being portrayed as such is in the Sports Illustrated: Swimsuit Issue. This certain issue of this magazine consists of several images of women posing in a sexy way wearing bathing suits. The Sports Illustrated: Swimsuit Issue is published annually by the magazine and is most commonly marketed to men (Davis). When the women are posing, it shows an exaggerated, false character trait that a woman’s purpose is to please a man. Generally, the stereotypes that are rendered for women are housewife, sexual objectification, and that they are dependent on a man’s protection (Zotos). In marketing for certain thing such as dish soap, cleaning supplies, and kitchen appliances, women are generally the models. This may be because when people think of household chores being done they picture a woman, our brains have been trained to do so from seeing these portrayals so often. We are repeatedly seeing women posing for advertisements in a sexy way with very little clothing on, making people turn their heads and pay attention to the product.
