Zoos treat animals poorly, care more about profit, and rob them from having normal lives. First, zoos treat their animals very poorly and are cruel to them. For example, an article from ABC News.go talks about a sloth bear at the Toledo Zoo that died of dehydration because zoo officials thought she was pregnant. They denied food and water for weeks. The zoo animals have to live in tiny, filthy, and barren enclosures.
In the article ¨ 6 Endangered Animals Poachers Are Hunting Into Extinction,¨ Jessica Phelan describes how the killing of Cecil the Lion decreased the tourism in Zimbabwe due to the hunting. This is just one example of poachers interfering with human life. If more of this continues, humans will be the only living thing on Earth. For elephants, laws have been passed to protect the ivory in their tusks that everyone wants to get hands on. In 2011, one in every 12 African elephants were killed (Phelan).
To start off with this, animal abuse is going on for many reasons. Animals are probably killed more than you could ever imagine. The whole animal abuse that is going on worldwide right now is leading to extinction for the animals because many actually did extinct. According to “think differently about sheep animal rights and what are animal rights”. “Millions of animals, 115 million are killed, such as dogs, rabbits, cats, apes, birds and way a lot more.
Abstract Human life is precious, then how about animals? Ending human life is considered as unethical and this is against the law. However, this does not apply to animals. Even though most families treat their animals as part of their family members, animal euthanasia is still a controversial issue nowadays. Millions of dogs are euthanized in each year and several methods are used by the veterinarian to put the animal to death.
The most common form of animal cruelty is abandonment of animals by heartless owners that treat them like they are a piece of trash. Every year, thousands of animals are discarded onto the streets with no food or care. Animals that have been neglected by their owners roam around the streets and eventually die due to starvation or some kind of disease unless they are rescued. Animals are not something that cannot be thrown away so easily, because they have rights as well and we need to treat them the way they should be treated. Another form of animal cruelty is scientists and companies using animals as test subjects.
P.T Barnum essentially founded animal cruelty within the industry. Mr Barnum used horrific methods of burning, using a hot poker, to handle animals, whilst also being responsible for the myth that elephants could not feel pain through their thick skin. When Barnum first created the circus he imported nine elephants from Sri Lanka in a cramped ship hold and kept inside for four months, with no air and insufficient space to take a single step. Subsequently this cause one elephant to die by the time the ship had arrived in America. Barnum was then fined more than £200,000 for animal rights violation, and his circus has been fined as recently as 2011.
People are trying and convincing shelters to raise their save rate. The problem is that won’t really make things better. To reduce the number of animals it euthanizes, a shelter must reduce the number of animals it takes in by charging high “surrender” fees, putting people on waiting lists, sending unsterilized animals to “foster” homes and more (Newkirk 2013). This leaves many animals to remain homeless. In order to limit the number of animals on the street, shelters most euthanize animals when necessary.
Argument Speech Attention Getter: Would you believe me if I told you that up to 200,000 animals are killed each year for cosmetic testing, according to Ian Murnaghan dated April 5, 2017? (Connect Topic to Audience) Please raise your hand if you have a pet (pause), so quite a few of you do. I bet some of these pets include cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, or fish. You may not know that all of these animals are commonly used for cosmetic animal testing. Your pets could have been one the unfortunate animals who die each year because of this unnecessary act.
Every year at least 320,000 primates, dogs, pigs, goats, sheep, rabbits, cats and other animals are hurt and killed by the DoD. These experiments are considered to be the most painful and the invasive conducted in the country´´ (www.sourcewatch.org, 3 of 6). In the second place, animals and animals and humans are different that cause that the tests can be inaccurate. For example, the anatomic, metabolic and cellular system are not the same between animals and us, for that reason, it make the animals a poor model to get this human benefits (www.animal-testing.procon.org, 3 of 7). At the same time, animal test do not predict results because most of the drugs that are tested on animals failed in humans.
Aside from the intense rainfall, natural disasters like hurricanes often bring devastating aftermath. One of the aftermaths can be observed in animal shelters, where overflowing number of abandoned pet animals is found. In Puerto Rico, animal shelters are overflowing with hundreds of abandoned dogs, cats, and even the occasional pet pig and fighting cock, three months after the Hurricane Maria struck. In the aftermath of the Category 4 storm that devastated Puerto Rico, fleeing residents toss pets over fences, tie them to gates, or even leave $20 under their collars as they find they can no longer care for their pets as they try to recover and rebuild their lives. These animals are often left on the streets to fend for themselves.
