The essential aspect of a self-directed, intrinsically motivated, active learner ate those basic skills that empowers the students who are learning outside of the classroom environment to learn on their own and survive the human race. Therefore, these aspects include the following:

1. They take initiative: The successful self-directed, intrinsically motivated active learner does not wait for a teacher to say, “You must learn”. The learner takes the initiative to learn.

2. They are comfortable with independent learning: The self-directed learner can with the aid of a computer and internet learn alone. Such a learner has no difficulty doing this because they have learnt to be self-reliant, self-directing and self-motivating techniques.

TWO AREAS OF PERSONAL WEAKNESS IN BEING A SELF-MOTIVATED AND ENGAGED STUDENT:

1. When I encounter a challenging problem, I try to solve it by myself. This is a great weakness I am having as an independent learner who is studying alone and staying alone apart from family members with no physical peer or instructor to turn to for help. There are logical challenging problems in mathematics that requires elaborate practical illustrations, explanation and examples to enable the student to understand. I am truly missing the visible presence of peers, school mates, class mates, study groups and instructors who can be easily contacted for help when the need arises.

2. As an independent self-motivated learner, I do not have a network of people in my life that I can count on for help. In conventional classroom learning, students have a network of people in their lives to offer assistance in case of difficulties. Spacing my learning: My weekly academic work with UoPeople have been well spaced in such a way that my work leaves me with ample time for my studies. I have time to read, research and write my assignments and make entries into learning journal, do peer assessment and take quizzes without constraints. With this plan, I have opportunity to go over my works and assignments and make necessary adjustment where needed.

2. Learn different learning techniques: Different learning techniques will empower a student to learn effectively at varying conditions. There are subjects that requires memorization to understand them whereas there are subjects like programming that requires practice to comprehend them. Listening skills for instance is essential in learning from audio documentaries. Different learning techniques is essential in making necessary adjustment which is essential for surviving varying academic challenges.

3. Connect new information to previous knowledge: There is the tendency with students to forget previous knowledge when exposed with new information. The skill to transfer previous knowledge and discover how they sync with new information is very crucial in grasping how the various sub-topics forms a body of knowledge. I strive to see how new information is connected to previous knowledge so that the chain of thought development is not
