The book that I have been reading is The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, and I have read 55 pages out of 220. So far, there are answers to my current essential questions about the book. For “How does knowing certain knowledge impact an individual’s actions and behaviors?”, the answer is that it it can impact how this individual thinks in the future and how they develop further plans. Similarly, this is how Randy acts when he finds out that he has terminal cancer, begins to panic and worry about his future and his family’s future. He has a fear for what will happen to his family without him, however, he soon realizes that he has to look for the light at the end of the tunnel. For “How does fear impact a person’s actions and behavior?”, the answer …show more content…
A major theme in this book is how to overcome hardship and how to make the best of a bad situation, for the author has to deal with these situations when he finds out he has cancer. Although he has a terminal illness, he tries to make the best out of his situation by “help[ing] others find a path to fulfilling their own dreams” and by giving a lecture on how to live life to the fullest (Pausch 10). The author is very successful in explaining this theme by giving advice on how to deal with hardship and difficult information to handle. The author structures his work by using many anecdotes about his life and the struggles he has had to go through. Pausch states in the book that “[he] didn’t believe in the no-win scenario” (Pausch 45). This supports my my essential question because this explains that fear and certain knowledge does not always affect how an individual acts and behaves. In some cases, at first Randy was worried for his future, but in the end he realizes that his family will do just fine without him. These factors can affect and drive human behavior, however, for Pausch, these factors did not heavily influence how he
After watching the Randy Pausch speech, I have gained a better understanding of what it is like to experience flow. Randy Pausch lived his life dedicated and fully immersed in all of his goals. Whether it was to become the guy at amusement park that won the big stuffed animals or being able to get into Brown University; he did everything to the best of his ability. Although he did not necessarily accomplish his childhood goal, he received greater lessons by not doing so. In trying to achieve his childhood goal, he came to understand that his abilities may not allow him to become an NFL player.
The phenomenon of this fear does not solely lie within its longevity but in its ability to tear apart, bring together, and
”(92). Suggesting that perhaps all living organisms are united through the universal concept of fear, he challenges Rainsford’s belief that “ The
The author believes that determination was the key to surviving in tough times. For example, Elie Wiesel is with his father at a concentration camp called Buna. Wiesel walked in on something at the wrong time. The SS officer is furious and punishes him. On page 38 the book states, “I came forward.
Imagine a person, lying on his or her deathbed. Throughout life, this person accomplished nothing whatsoever because there was no instance where he or she needed to leave his or her comfort zone or figure out life. Often times, situations like these can happen to people because they spent their entire lives avoiding scenario after scenario. In Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen, one of the central topics addressed in the novel is finding solutions to problems in life. The protagonist, Cole, overcomes serious problems he has and, in turn, makes his life more agreeable.
Adversity occurs in everyone’s life. The book, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho that transpires before technology, about a shepherd named Santiago, who has a dream about a treasure in Egypt. The movie, Good Will Hunting transpires in 1997, about a man named Will who had a horrible childhood but would read to escape the problems of his childhood. As he grew older he turned out a genius but did not want the knowledge he had. When personal legends and goals come into question, adversity will always come right around the corner.
Fear occurs within everyone. Whether the fear be of something concrete like spiders or something intangible such as a fear of being alone. No matter the type, fear is something that everyone must learn to overcome. In the book All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr it is shown that one must confront their fears or risk being overcome by them. This is shown through a variety of characters in the use of literary devices.
Life can be difficult, and people every day have to endure their own type of adversity, but adversity isn’t limited to just one problem but an array of difficulties. These problems can appear from many factors may it be a physical, mental, or social situation. The problems of adversity can be seen in the book The Other Wes Moore, as throughout the book, both of the Moore’s have faced different problems, with one overcoming, and the other being stuck with obstacles. When anyone is in the face of adversity, being guided to overcome will lead to success, while the less guided will lead to more stresses. Any type of adversity can emerge at any time, but the best way to overcome it is to find guidance.
Howard Schultz once said, “In times of adversity and change, we discover who we are and what we are made of.” In life, one starts to realize everything is not always peachy. Sometimes one has to go through patches of thorns before things start to look up, but in the long run difficulties in life turn out to make one stronger person. In the books Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom, and Night by Elie Wiesel, two of the main characters are pushed to their limits and beyond. How these men react to their situation is both mesmerizing, and courageous.
War Combat, loyalty, enmity, bloodshed, and duty, all words that fit under the category of war. The novel Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is about Louis Zamperini a strong willed man raised in Torrance, California. He started as a young troublemaker until he discovered his passion for running in high school. That very passion led him to compete in the Olympics. Later he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, a brave decision that would change his life.
I will inform them on the many ways that it helps young kids who have been diagnosed with cancer and terminal illnesses. I will persuade my audience to support Make-A-Wish foundation. I am interested in this topic because not only do I have close friends who have had cancer but I also think this is a great way to help children who are struggling at such a young age. This topic will connect with the audience because cancer and terminal illnesses have affected a lot of people whether it was a direct or distant family member, or family friend.
Fear can do a lot to a person, fear can make someone do crazy things. Elie overcomes the brutalities and insanities of Auschwitz, he faces fear in way in he never expected to face, he develops the fear of selection, the unknown, and fear for his family's safety. Throughout the the memoir Night, Elie Wiesel uses fear to show his journey through deathly encounters, the unknown, and for his caretaker role for his father. First arriving into the ghettos, came the fear of the unknown. Why were Elie and his family there?
Although fear is constituted with a negative connotation, it in fact has a very constructive purpose to life, as long as one faces it. Challenging one’s fears can be constructive by protecting him, purifying his intentions, and by enhancing his life. Fear can become essential to protecting one’s life. As Alvarez demonstrates in Antojos when she states, “She had been too frightened to carry out any strategy,
Frankl, the author describes the day-to-day brutality and humiliation in the Nazi concentration camps that robbed many prisoners of their self-worth and humanity. He talks about his own strive to retain a sense of meaning even in the face of such unpleasant situation. Frankl did so basically by concentrating on his wife and on his work which with great hope, to resume after he left the concentration camp. Frankl’s message in this book is primarily one of hope, as he seeks to encourage us to find meaning in life and suffering even in the most miserable, absurd and dehumanizing
The writer, Isabel Allende once stated, “We don’t even know how strong we are until we are forced to bring that hidden strength forward. In the times of tragedy, of war, of necessity, people do amazing things.” Survival is not something that most people have in mind. Many people don’t have to suffer to survive, however in the case of a tragedy, disaster, or harsh environments, survival is a necessity. To survive, their mind must be completely set on the goal.
