‘We all have the capacity to inspire and empower others. But we must first be willing to devote ourselves to our personal growth and development as leaders’ (George et al. 2007, p.5).
The above statement struck me when I was reading the paper. Looking back at my past 11 years Engineering career, it didn’t occur to me at least once that I could empower others to act to deliver superior results within my team and organisation.

I’ve learnt that leadership is not about me as individual but how enable others to do their jobs and, lead them into positions where they can succeed.

In order to understand my personal leadership, I’ve done two assessments on personality and one on emotional intelligent.
My Myers-Briggs Type Indicator has clearly displayed that I am a definitive ESTJ. Characteristic of ESTJs are logical, objective and analytical. The possible weakness I can identify is at work I am overpowering and refusing to listen to others. This lead to potential pitfall of I may decide too quickly, may not see the need for change, may overlook the niceties in working and get the job done, may be overtaken by my feelings and values.

You are not interested in sharing responsibility with others or making team decisions. You rather believe the saying "shared responsibility is no responsibility". You prefer work to be well divided and for each person to have their own task. The challenge is to find how you can keep your independence and still share information and pool resources and skills. If you have to work in teams, we recommend reading Katzenbach's "The Wisdom of Teams".
Personal leadership outlined by Mastrangelo et al. (2004) are:
Expertise – It is the perceived ability and competence of leaders. In the feedback of my co-worker, I’ve demonstrated that
Trust – Trust is the perceived honesty, sincerity and dependability of leaders.
Caring – Caring is defined as empathy, listening, and politeness to others.
Sharing – It is defined as sharing authority and information.
Moral – Moral behaviour is defined as a moral code generally based on treating others with integrity, fairness, and
Kouzes and Posner (2021) suggest that leaders should focus on developing their emotional intelligence by becoming more self-aware, self-regulated, motivated, empathetic, and socially skilled. The personal development plan helps leaders take a more proactive approach to their own development, rather than relying solely on the resources provided in the
I am Cadet Captain Mejia and I have been in JROTC my whole high school career (4 years). It has been a crazy 4 years, from being cadet of the month my freshmen year to being color guard commander my senior year. JROTC has been a roller coaster for me, I loved JROTC my freshmen year. I did everything my first year in JROTC, I was in color guard, drill team, unarmed drill team, and raiders team! I did almost all color guard performances.

In developing this paper on leadership, I examined what was most important to me as a leader. As I reflected on my leadership philosophy, I thought about my experiences and the principals that I have learned through my own self-discovery and the observation of other leaders that I have had throughout my life. My leadership philosophy paper will focus on what leadership is to me, core values, and knowledge of others. In thinking about my definition of leadership, I thought of what was most important to me in and as a leader.
But even with all the leadership training programs and “expert” advice available, effective leadership still eludes many people and organizations. One reason, says Daniel Goleman, is that such experts offer advice based on inference, experience, and instinct, not on quantitative data. Now, drawing on research of more than 3,000 executives, Goleman explores which precise leadership behaviors yield positive results. He outlines six distinct leadership styles, each one springing from different components of emotional intelligence. Each style has a distinct effect on the working atmosphere of a company, division, or team, and, in turn, on its financial performance.
Written Assignment Unit 2 Personality Types Searched and Found by the Jungian Test – The ‘Me’ I never knew When I took the Jungian test, little did I know about my personality. I remember doing some tests but I did not really get much from them but the Jungian personality test proved that I was an INFJ personality. My scores were quite interesting and the description of the INFJ type made me feel proud about myself especially comments on using the inner workings of the mind and being able to look beyond the future. Other key issues of INFJ are being idealists, doers, and dreamers, sensitive in what relationships to get along with, a perfectionist, and champions.
Being an effective leader can be a challenging task when managing numerous employees with many different personalities. Each employee works and thinks differently and a great leader is able to distinguish each trait and enhance those qualities. Moreover, having a caring heart can help enhance each employee’s personal traits and relationships with the leaders. Being an effective leader isn’t always about the numbers and the company, it is about showing the passion for the employees and establishing a caring and supporting

The Johari window was created by two American psychologists, Joseph Luft (1916–2014) and Harrington Ingham (1914–1995) in 1955 and is a technique used to help people better understand their relationship with themselves as well as others. [Luft, J. Ingham, H. (1955)]. This technique is to help people know (first of all) themselves better and after that, helps know each other better and this improves the relationship between two persons. Johari window can make you improve your personality. This technique can be between one person (you) and another person or a group of persons (the others).
Leadership has been defined in a variety of ways, there are multiple authors and theorists who have tried to define and understand leadership, all leading to varying theories and conclusions, but one thing that is universally understood is the importance of effective leadership and how someone with good leadership skills can impact so many people around them. (Kakabadse and Kakabadse, 1999; Yukl, 2002; Northouse,2013) The main components that have been identified to play a role in leadership are relations between leader and subordinates, interaction form between leader and followers, the influence that the leader has, the way in which the leader behaves and finally a leader’s traits. (Yukl, 2002) These elements that make up a leader, are then used as building blocks to identify the way in which each specific leader deals with its followers.
Individual Reflective Paper Introduction Leadership, a controversial concept, has been studied for centuries. Scholars who study leadership have argued with the insight of leadership for many decades and finally promote a wide range of understandings of it. This course “values and leadership” introduces the basic principles and concepts about leadership, and provides us with some conceptual knowledge and practical approaches to be an outstanding leaders. I chose to take this course because I am interested in the topic about leadership.
During my time in high school, I was responsible for leading a fund raising charity event. Aside from this experience I have not been in situations where I have shown or developed valuable leadership qualities (L1,2,3), however after attending the ‘Women in Industry’ event (appendix) I was motivated by these women to look for ways to develop these leadership skills further. If I can develop leadership qualities I can gain a competitive advantage to reach a managerial and higher paying position in my career. Emotional intelligence and leadership are therefore intertwined.
LEADERSHIP Ogbeidi (2012) found that leadership is referred as “ability to lead, direct and organize a group”. The study of leadership has developed scientifically through changing paradigms during its history where several models and theories have tried to explain the concept of leadership. Kuchler (2008) acknowledges that although subject of leadership is diverse and somewhat scattered but it tends to be one of the most widely discussed topics by the researchers all over the world. We found myriad definitions of leadership after studying detailed literature on it. The concept of leadership is described by different researchers with different perspectives.
Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace Successful leaders have been studied extensively in an effort to determine the attributes contributing to effective leadership. Pearman (2011) writes leaders who employ the use of emotional intelligence deliver more transparent communication, accomplish initiated goals and plans, and realize a greater level of employee satisfaction and engagement. The relevance of emotional intelligence stems from the need for leaders to have strong relationships with followers so as to build an advantageous work environment (Pearman, 2011). Therefore, in addition to possessing the necessary technical skills, a truly outstanding leader also maximizes the application of emotional intelligence in the workplace.
