Synopsis: In Chicago, Esteban Sotelo, 19, and a 14 year old boy shot a man six times. The victim was a 29-year-old man; he was trying to put his 20-month old daughter in her car seat. Sotelo was a member of the Latin Kings gang, and the shooting was the younger boy’s gang initiation. Sotelo and the young boy set out to shoot a member of the rival Satan’s Disciples gang. The neutralization theory is the view that people commit crimes because they use techniques of neutralization to defuse their guilt. There are five different techniques, however the one portrayed in this case is appealing to a higher loyalty. This specific technique says that people commit crime because the act has a greater purpose and that the act is important to a certain group of people. In this case, Esteban Sotelo and the juvenile go out on the streets to shoot someone. Sotelo is in the gang, Latin Kings, and the juvenile is trying to get initiated. For the initiation, they planned to shoot someone of the rival gang, Satan’s Disciples. This act of shooting someone is honoring the Latin Kings gang. These boys are committing this act because it is what the gang members requested them to do. So in order for these boys to eventually go back out on the streets and commit more crimes, they must justify their actions. The boys will justify the act by saying it was for the good of the gang. Justifying the act will result in their guilt disappearing, which will end in them being able to commit more crimes. Described by many as hard-working, intelligent, golf aficionado, not much about him fitted the profile of a serial killer. Regardless of the reason, id he just snap or was his action a result of a long history of “hit or relent”, the results became evident on March 6, 1998. He had “brushed” shoulders with all his victims, and it is most likely that he was seeking revenge. On the said day he came armed with a semi-automatic handgun, a butcher knife, and three clips containing at least 19 rounds each.
In 2015, 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee was brutally murdered because of gang retaliation. Tyshawn’s father is a high ranking member of a rival gang; whom they had supposedly shot the brother and mother in a car of one of the suspects. The initial retaliation of Lee was to kidnap him and cut off his ears and fingers. Instead Lee was led off the playground by (witnesses say) (LINK 9) a man.
In January 2015 Conner Hanson was accused of shooting and killing 18 year old Anthony Gabriel. After the car chase led to the shooting and killing of Gabriel, Hanson is be on trial in adult court. Hason’s attorney told jurors that Gabriel was the aggressor and Hanson was just defending himself. Along with Gabriel in the vehicular was his 17 year old girlfriend and Hanson’s 6 month old baby girl. Prosecutor Randy Sample then explained to the jury that Hanson and a co-defendant placed bandanas on their faces before Gabriel was shot and killed.
Investigators suspect that the shooting was either drug related or a reprisal shooting for a prior incident. Around 4 pm on July 16, Thomas, 19, of Nice Street, La Romain was at his god brother 's home along Charles Street when he got a phone call from someone telling him to pick up a meal of barbecue chicken. While riding his bicycle, a white Nissan AD Wagon pulled in front him and three men with automatic guns jumped out and shot him. The men then got back into the wagon and left.
On October 18th, a teen in Meridian, Idaho shot and killed a 15-year-old, but police say the the shooting was an accident. 18-year-old David Provencio was smoking marijuana and consuming alchohol with many others in a home close to East Franklin Road. Provencio said that he pointed the gun and shot the victim, not knowing that the gun was loaded. And the kid who was shot was pronounced dead at the hospital. When the authorities arrived at the scene they were told that the kid shot himself while there were several children and a few adults there at the time of the shooting.
They had been doing it for years, since he was 8 years old. The gang knows the younger a member starts the more they will find murder, and drug deals to be natural to them. This is how they get the loyalty they demand from their members. Members think of the way they are protecting their families, and loved ones. Others are in for revenge and keep that on their mind to kill people and sell drugs.

In the United States, every year there are around 2,000 gang-related homicides and in the realistic fiction novel, The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton, it explores the issues of gang violence, and teenagers in gangs. Around 40% of all members in gangs are teenagers, who are getting involved in some dangerous things very early in life. In the novel The Outsiders, the “Greasers” which is a gang of all teenagers, fight other gangs and commit serious crimes such as murder. We as a society need to pinpoint why teenagers join gangs and stop them beforehand. We also need to help people get out of gangs if they are already in one.

The media and the public do not know what motivates these boys to commit such act and it is easier to assume that they are “savages” as their characters than to find alternative reasons. Boys from their ethnic background have a reputation for crime in New York City. In this case, the people fail to find alternative reasons and they stick to their first perception of the situation. As a result, they gave a group of teenage boys punishment for crimes they did not commit.

How many innocent children have to be brutally murdered before it is enough? This has been an uprising topic in today’s society since school shootings are so prevalent. From Kentucky, to Oregon, to Colorado, to Florida, the safety of our nation 's schools have been shattered by gunfire. The ones who have committed such horrible crimes have done these actions for many different reasons, at different times, and at different schools. Yet, they do have at least one thing in common.
Gang violence is a growing problem in this world. No parent would like to imagine their kids dealing with weapons or being threatened by them. These violence’s affects each child individually and their families as well. These gangs recruit multiple different individuals for many reasons such as bribery, family traditions, or even threatening. Although, many kids feel like they have to be a part of it but there are many resources out in this world to prevent them from believing so.
