The use of ethical guidelines is to produce quality services and training provided by counsellors to protect clients. These guidelines provide the standards for professionals and prove to be an effective way support numerous counsellors lacking experience or that may be new to the field. It is a way of structuring the counselling industry by providing everyday professional explanations, definitions and service limitations for each type of counsellor (AIPC, 2010).There are a broad range of issues in counselling which are also displayed in the guidelines. Due to possible client concerns, the AIPC formulated the guidelines surrounding common grey areas, such as confidentiality. Confidentiality is under General Principle A: Respect for the rights and dignity of people and peoples within the guidelines (Australian Psychological Society, 2013).
Because of this, focus is placed on desired results of counseling as a whole, from both the counselor and client
The right of informed consent is an ethical and legal requirement when working with clients. Informed consent is based on a client’s right to self-determination, along with being able to make autonomous decisions pertaining to treatment. The process of informed consent is viewed as legal requirement that is an important part of the therapeutic process. “It also establishes a foundation for creating a working alliance and a collaboration partnership between the client and therapist” (Corey, G. 2017, p.41). The importance of informed consent is seen as it provides the general goals of counseling, the responsalbities of the counselor towards the client.
Social workers are bound to codes and ethics. Confidentiality is needed to ensure the sessions are effectively done and the goal can be achieve for the well being of the clients. This is also important to prevent the social worker being charged or arrested from violating the client’s information. As social workers might have dilemma in sharing the client’s details. Discussing it with seniors or supervisors can help us in finding the most suitable to handle the issues.
In the case of the multiple relationships, there are risks of harming the client. In the place where multiple relationships cannot be avoided the client should ensure the necessary steps to protect the client (Cohon, 2018). Social worker needs to have the ability to do critical thinking ,in order to make ethical decision. When addressing an ethical dilemma, having the ability to identify possible outcomes to address it is essential for change. The ethical dilemma I face at my field placement is confidentiality versus the right to self-determination. One possible option I mentioned previously to address the ethical dilemma was for clients to sign a privacy and confidentiality agreement that outlines what is considered mandated reporting. I believe the possible outcome for this option would help improve the client’s confidence with the agency and the clinician but also build rapport and trust. It would result in less missed appointments, assist with client involvement, and help the client feel supported while in crisis.
2.2 Care Act 2014 The Community Care Act 2014 sections 1, 2 and 4 highlights the general responsibilities of the act and it could be said the ones that most affect social workers in making decisions for action. We will look at these sections to see how they fit alongside the BASW Code of Ethics for Social Workers (2012). S.1 promoting individual wellbeing: This section states that the core purpose of adult care and support is to help people to achieve the outcomes that matter to them in their life. The general duty of a local authority, in exercising a function under this part in the case of an individual, is to promote general wellbeing (Department of Health 2014).
The ACA Code of Ethics is a set of standards for professional helpers to follow. The Code “reflects the counseling profession’s understanding of the responsibilities inherent in the covenantal relationship with society” (Ponton & Duba, 2009). This Code is a set of standards to basically keep everyone on the same page when working with clients. Upon reading the Code, I was intrigued with the Bartering component found in section A.10.d. I did not realize that bartering was allowed at such a professional level.
Educators must question themselves on their personal interests re this vocation in regards to having any adverse influence in the performance of their public duty. The principles of procedural fairness must be applied, particularly employing the “rule against bias”, were the grounds of this rule acknowledges that even though an unbiased decision had been arrived at, the suspicion alone connected to this scenario will taint the notion of impartiality (Code of Conduct, 2016, p.46). The initial steps in proceeding to deal with this dilemma is to report this conundrum to your supervisor were correct procedural steps may be taken to uphold the integrity of both school and educator. A possible solution would be to organize that the student fall under the care of an alternative tutor, not connected with the school in question. However, if that does not come to fruition, the most feasible course would be to consult the parents of the students in question and explain the scenarios and options available, as well as outlining the policies of the school and the issues that are in question.
Equally important is being ethical. My preferred ethical lens from the Ethical Lens Inventory is the relationship lens. This was no surprise to me because being fair and assuring justice for all has always been a part of me. The blind spot of the relationship lens is overconfidence in process. My personal ethics influence my decision making every day from ensuring the delivery guy gets a fair tip to finding money on the street and spending(giving) it on someone else that needs it more than I do.
