Ethical decision making is important to counselors for a couple of reasons. The first, has to do with the core of what being a counselor is about. The American Counseling Association (2014) Code of Ethics says in code A.1., that the foremost feature of being a counselor is to “promote the welfare of clients” (p.4). Furthermore, it elaborates on this idea further when code A.4.a. mentions, to avoid precipitating harm to their clients, is a practitioner’s responsibility. Jones, Shillito-Clarke, Syme Hill, Casemore, and Murdin (2000) state that clients are harmed by unethical practice.
