My Ethical Dilemma In School

My ethical dilemma is based on an incident that I faced in my professional life two years ago. I was working for a Non-Governmental Organisation called Doorstep School. It was an organisation, which was affiliated to many public government schools, which served the under-privileged section of society. In India, the poverty is rampant and the government schools do not have very well qualified teachers, as the pay is not attractive. Hence, organisations like these, recruit individuals who are willing to spare a few hours of their time to teach different subjects in these schools voluntarily. In this light, I used to visit the school every weekend to teach them English.

It refers to taking into account a person’s general behaviour and motivation, rather than focusing on just one unusual event. For me, I could vouch for his consistency and overall potentials. The occurrence of one unusual event should not have overshadowed his virtues of the whole year. Furthermore, it was also act utilitarianism. It was a case where I evaluated the situation and did something that would benefit the society, without thinking about the laws that were binding me. I compared the consequences and legal implications of both situations. The exploration of consequences gave me the courage to emphasise on the virtue ethics and stand up for him.
Deontology states that upholding ones duties is what is considered ethically correct. Here my duty was just to teach and not to interfere in the administrative matters of the school. I should consider the rules of my school as the primary role. But here, there were conflicting obligations. For me, my duty was definitely to uphold the regulations of the school. Yet, I could not compromise on my duties of being a student’s mentor and confidante. This gave me the power to convince the
