Permissive Parenting Styles Essay

As stated by Kim (1999), a child’s early stages of learning are crucial and has a great impact on his future as this is the time where a child’s personality is shaped. Undoubtedly, parents play a significant role in child’s development. However, ethical issue like child abuse and neglection pose a great concern to the society. According to Baumrind, there are different types of parenting styles, namely authoritarian, authoritative and permissive.

First, authoritarian parenting style is one of the most common parenting styles in Asia. Authoritarian parents tend to be very demanding, but don’t express much warmth. They are also very strict and do not give their child freedom, as Chua (2011) states that they don’t allow their child to attend

They prioritize peaceful relationship by avoiding conflicts. Since permissive parents are less demanding, therefore children tend to be self-motivated. They are also less stressful as they are not burdened with parents’ expectations. To boost children's creativity, freedom of choice is given to them. Children mature in the process of choice-making, regardless whether their choices prompt success or failure (Lynne, 2012). Permissive parents favour flexibility in setting rules. Although inconsistency in establishing rules can cause the lack of self-discipline in child, but life is more relaxing without rigid rules, thus creating a loving atmosphere in families. A survey that was carried out on Swedish teens states that excessive parental control is detrimental to a child’s demeanor (Stattin, 2001). To children, parents are also more like a friend. After conducting a study on 790 Dutch adolescents recently, researchers imply that secret-sharing between child and parents cultivates harmonious family relationships and decreases the rate of delinquency (Frijns et al, 2013).
