In the show “Real sports”, Bryan Gumbel investigates cases we have today in sports. A lot of the things we see on TV related to sports, do not really cover the news involving players. Real sports showcased 3 cases involving the murder of Cherica Adams, Women in sports broadcasting, and Tatiana McFadden in the Olympics. There are a lot of things that go on in the sports industry that we don’t hear about often. These cases show what goes on behind the scenes and allow us to see more into the lives of those in the sports industry. The first case was over Cherica Adams; a girlfriend of a formal NFL player, Rae Carruth. Cherica had been pregnant with Rae’s baby for 8 months, which Rae had not been prepared for. He had hired a man named Van Brett Watkins who had shot her multiple times. Watkins left the scene immediately, which left Cherica desperately calling 911. She was then rushed to the hospital under critical care. Her baby was delivered once she arrived and was denied oxygen for 1 hour which led to brain damage in her son’s brain. When Cherica woke up the next morning after the incident she was able to write a note telling the police what happened. Shortly after, Cherica had gone into a coma for 28 days before eventually dying. …show more content…
Women broadcasters feel like they have to look attractive or have to act a certain way to gain the male audience’s approval. Former broadcasters say they should avoid focusing on their own attractiveness to gain popularity in the industry since beauty isn’t going to last forever. For example, Melissa Wilson felt as if it was hard to be a female broadcaster because there was a lot of maintenance to it. On the other hand, a reporter for fox named Charissa Thompson, likes to use these “techniques” to her advantage. By “flirting” and using her attractiveness it leads to more personal and interesting interviews with
Originally published in Sports Illustrated on September 17, 2002, The Boy They Couldn’t Kill: How Rae Carruth’s son survived and thrives is an article where the author, Thomas Lake, intends to inspire others to be open to forgive. Lake uses the story of Saundra Adams, a grandmother raising her grandchild, Chancellor Lee Adams. Saundra’s daughter, Cherica Adams, had been talking to a player on the Carolina Panthers football team, Rae Carruth, beginning the summer of 1998 (Lake 6). Lake states that by May of 1999, Cherica had become pregnant with a baby boy and celebrated this with her mother (Lake 9).

Giving these real world examples of worldwide popular sports helps boost Whatron’s credibility of his argument. Wharton uses a strong ethos appeal which contributes to the validity of his argument. To begin, David Wharton is a famous sports journalist for the Los Angeles Times (Los Angeles Times). Wharton received his degree in journalism and as years progressed he won best sports writing awards, won the award of “Best American Sports Writing”, and is the author of two sports related books (Los Angeles Times).
Although it can be argued that unorganized sports had a greater role in Europe during the period from 1860 to 1940, organized sports had a huge role during this time period, and was much more largely perceived by Europeans of the time. The role of organized sports from 1860 to 1940 differed in definition depending on who was asked and from what country that European came from. Some believed that sports instilled a sense of nationalism in a country’s players as well as its citizens, whether the country competed in the modern Olympics or not. On the other hand, some Europeans saw greater value in the moral lessons to be learned through organized sports. On a larger note, European womankind took a large step towards equality by competing in organized
In 2016, there are a plethora of challenges facing professional, college, and high school athletic departments. According to Howard and Crompton (2014) the recession of 2007-2009 had a substantial impact on the sports industry across all levels. Professional sports are challenged with providing affordable tickets to games as “total attendance dropped for three of the four major leagues from 2007 to 2011” (p. 9). The “overall financial state of intercollegiate athletics is grim” as collegiate athletic departments struggle to control soaring cost (p. 55). High school sports are also struggling financially as they attempt to maintain deteriorating facilities, remain observant to Title IX spending requirements, and provide the needed resources,
Harassment and abuse are considered breaches of human rights and occur in all countries. According to Encyclopedia of Psychology, sexual abuse is unwanted sexual activity with perpetrators using force, making threats or taking advantage of victims who are not able to give consent. Most of victims and perpetrators know each other. In sport, women athletes are more frequent victims of harassment and abuse than men athletes. Many women athletes drop out of sport rather than continue being subjected to the constant harassment and abuse.
How can we call ourselves a nation that is trying to prevent racism and discrimination when we still have a racist sports name, which was invented in a very low and racial time for our long native people? Discriminating them and basically stalking the Native Americans of their rough history, this name is in every way disrespectful and filled with disgust. This name was invented when there were social policies to eliminate Native American tribes and Civilization Regulations, which banned and outlawed their traditions. How is this name not offensive and how was it meant out of respect? The Redskins are hated by so many organizations, like the NCAI, other tribes, Civil Rights organizations, school boards and even public officials that there is no way they can get away with the name “Redskins”.
Postman expands upon this using the steps in hiring a news anchor as he explains: “You would, first, choose a cast of players, each of whom has a face that is both “likable” and “credible.” …This means that you will exclude women who are not beautiful or who are over the age of fifty, men who are bald, all people who are overweight-“ (100) What makes this sad is that you can flip on the news right now, and be met with a pretty face who can read just as well as the next guy. No one wants look at a rather uninviting face as they reveal current events when they could be looking at someone with pretty eyes, or good looking hair. Why might you ask? The answer is simple: entertainment.
Sports Law Midterm I. (A) After reviewing the case that was given to us, I do not believe we have enough valuable information to fully comprehend what had happen that night Sarah Smith got struck in the head with a hockey puck. But given what we do know, there is no way that Sarah’s estate can bring a claim against the Blue’s organization for hiring Kyle Albert. It was clearly an accident, there was no way Albert had intentionally deflected the puck into the stands to purposely hit Sarah. On the other hand, Sarah’s estate can bring a claim to the Blue’s organization for owning the hockey arena because it obviously wasn’t a safe area for fans to be in.
Ethical issues in sports Sports in today’s world have gained a lot of importance and there have been a lot of additions to sports in the form of new rules, policies the way it is meant to be played etc. Though many stringent laws are framed, implemented and monitored there are always some sort of issues in the way the sports activities are carried out. Regardless of the level of participation some of the players resort to unethical ways of winning the event. The attitude towards the sportsmanship has changed significantly over the years.
Sport managers are responsible for the moral decisions that govern an organizations behaviour. An individual must understand that certain decisions may be right or wrong when it comes to situations in life. Since the 21st century, sport has developed an increase in talent, many individuals choose to make unethical decisions to benefit themselves. It is also important to allow every individual an equal opportunity to be a part of a sports team unless reasons exist otherwise. When choosing a team, evaluation should be based on skill, personality, and prior behaviour.
When the media did show the female athletes they always showed the negative plays in the clips of commercials making the girls look bad and weak. “Womens sports continues to be covered in ways that convey the message to audiences that women's sports

Should Athletes and Entertainers Be Paid Large Sums of Money? “Crack” is the sound the ball makes as it soars far, far away right into your mother’s new flowers. Many of us, as kids, loved to go outside and play sports. I’m sure some of us even wanted to make a career out of a sport at some point. We loved to watch our favorite athletes win a championship.
What is the Relationship Between the Amount of Money a Team is Able to Spend and Their Position in the English Premier League? Rationale For my mathematical exploration I decided to base it around the topic of sports. While looking for a topic, sport stood out to me, as it has been a passion of mine ever since I was younger. I have also never thought about the significance of mathematics in sport other than in player statistics.
