Abortion Has Been A Long Standing Ethical Issue

From this decision, the United States Supreme Court declared that having an abortion was far safer than a natural child birth. In that court room, it was also determined that the word “person” did not include an unborn fetus (Kaplan). The country was completely divided on the Roe v. Wade decisions. Many American’s were angered by the fact that the United States no longer legally considered an unborn fetus to be a person. However, it was a huge relief for many young women across the country.

Abortion is not only a fluctuating concept in our society, but an ethical and emotional debate, as well. The image I have chosen presents concepts from a cultural and historical background, as well as presents an ethical, emotional, and logical appeal to the audience. The debate about abortion has simply been overblown and exhausted. The truth of the matter is, abortion is murder. Ending a life, whether innocent or guilty, is murder.

Rachel Roth begins this article by examining the historical components of reproductive rights and fetal rights in this country. She then explains that the history of the two have created the now issue that women face in around the topic of abortion. She explains that the long struggles of abortion have led to fetal rights. “This idea has served to punish women in nontraditional behavior than to protect their children, while reinforcing the idea that women’s bodies are and should be public property” (Roth, 322). Meaning, the concept of fetal rights has begun to take its own course of action, which in the process has decreased the rights of the woman.

In communism, since the role of the individual does not come into play the issue of gun control would not come into play. Ownership for anything, including a gun, would have to be authorized and distributed through the government. In communist state, gun control would rely solely on the government. There would be no issue of “gun control” as the government has full control over who has guns and who does not. In contrast, an individual’s rights in capitalism supersedes all other factors.

In his piece, Doing the Right Thing, Michael J. Sandal makes the argument that “life in democratic societies is rife with disagreement about right and wrong, justice and injustice” (27). I full heartedly agree with this statement. Throughout the history of the world we as humans have been faced with an infinite amount of controversial issues. These topics are sensitive enough on either side of the argument that it is virtually impossible to create a common ground in which everyone shares the same opinion. One of the issues that is most relevant today is whether or not abortion is murder.

This includes the right to life. Both arguments I summarize here focus on the question of whether a fetus is a person, or whether it is the type of entity that has the right to life” (Austin, 2019, p.3). Dr. Austin argues that abortion would be unethical considering this concept of personhood. Whether or not the fetus is regarded as a person or other thing with a right to life is a contentious issue. The mentality of pro-life and pro-choice activists greatly diverge, and this question plays a significant role in that.

There are many instances where Christians and non-Christian will face ethical dilemmas, that could lead to the choice of life or death. How an individual confronts that situation and their overall solution depends on their beliefs about morality and ethics. For instance, Susan faces an ethical dilemma, where she has to choose whether or not to terminate her pregnancy. She is facing the problem that her unborn child will have down syndrome. In 2011, “730,322 abortions were reported to the Centers for Disease control” (Operation Rescue, n.d.).

Abortion is one of the most controversial topics discussed in our world today. Millions of fetuses never got a chance to be born because a mother chose to abort them. Although I do not believe in abortion, I believe a woman should have the right to decide whether to have a baby or not. Our textbook presents views and arguments on the issues. The article from our text on “A Defense of Abortion” written by Judith Jarvis Thomason states the right to have an abortion should be the pregnant woman’s decision.

Thesis Statement: Abortion has been a major topic throughout the years, there has been much debate between pro-choice and pro-life but if people can come together to reach comprises it could help society make positive progress. There are many different views and opinions on abortion in today’s world. Some would say that abortion is wrong and others would say it is right; and some would say it is wrong or right depending on the circumstances. This is when complications surface and people began to look at all aspects of the situation. Abortion has always been a controversial social issue but not as potent as the year 2016 and 2017.

Abortion is Ethical in many ways. A woman has a right to her own body to make decisions for herself. In some cases, women use abortion because of severe medical problems not only for the mother, but for the fetus. Test could show birth defects or complications that could potentially harm the fetus but the mother as well. Parents would make their teenager consider an abortion or adoption because they can’t afford to take care of another child and wouldn’t have the time to help raise it. They look at these options as an easy way out and for their teenager to finish growing up without caring for another human being. These options put strands on family relationships and make it a little more stressful to deal with. Most teenagers hide their pregnancy because they are scared of their parents. Some teenagers are scared to talk to their parents about sex and teen pregnancy because of how they would react.

Abortion is a very controversial topic, for example, one side of this topic believes abortion is cruel and committing murder, while the other side believes that since the fetus or embryo isn 't developed enough to be considered a living human being yet, that abortion is not commiting murder. Despite this information, there is a lot more to abortion than the opinion of it being “right” or “wrong”. According to “Students for life” who are pro life, about 1 million abortions are executed each year in the US. That data adds up to 22% of pregnancies ending in abortion.

There are two fields of ideas on abortion. One being that it is the murder of an innocent fetus, and that it is completely unethical. The second school of thought is that abortion is a right for women, and that it is ethical.
