We demonstrated in earlier chapters the concept of ethics in business and we showed that there is no doubt about the importance of ethics in today’s society and in business practices in particular. One can hardly read a business publication today without being reminded of a corporate scandal that points to dirty business performance. These scandals referred as accounting scandals have directed the discussions towards the effect of business ethics education and training. The role of ethics, values, and integrity in accounting has been pushed aside to focus on the technical basics. Business schools seem to be involuntarily overstressing on technical accounting knowledge. Although many still doubt the validity of teaching ethics in classrooms, we believe that the approach of including ethical education in higher accounting classes is enviable. Yet, the subject here is not only whether the level of ethics among students should be raised, but also how to teach these courses.
Offering business ethics as a stand-alone course or integrating it across the curriculum has initiated much discussion. The literature argued if following the discrete accounting ethics courses or the integrated course approaches is better for teaching accounting students ethics. The AACSB and National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) allow ethics to be covered through an integrated program of content across the accounting curriculum. Integration creates less drag on the accounting curriculum than standalone courses; ethics content can be added this way without displacing significant amounts of accounting content .Others supported that offering courses exclusively dedicated to business ethics transmit a strong feeling of the importance of …show more content…

In fact the overreliance on ethics cases when teaching ethics is criticized; and, it has been argued that the dependence on cases without the instruments for theoretical evaluation do not steadily increase students’ capability to reason ethically. Ethical education should focus on triggering the way of thinking about ethical issues and how the students as individuals will cope with the issues before they are tackled with real world dilemmas.
Thus the Code of Conduct and cases are not sufficient, what is absent? Instruction on ethical and morals theories is also needed to accomplish a full array of ethics outcome. Learning about the different ethical perspectives can assist students in developing personal thinking skills and aid them in knowing how values and principles are an essential part of ethical decision making.
