Eugene Williams: The Chicago Race Riots Of 1919

The Reconstruction time period was 1865 to 1877. During the period, the states that had seceded were readmitted as part of the Union. In my opinion, the Reconstruction time period was a failure.

From the mid 1910s to the early 1960s there were many riots that occured, because of racial tensions built up between the the whites and the blacks world wide. Coming from Will Brown being accused of rapping a young white girl, and to Eugene Williams having rocks thrown at him causing him to drown. Segregation at this time was unjustified due to racism still being heavily considered as the right thing to do. These riots caused the United States to be even more segregated, due to unequal rights and no laws being created at the time to help and protect African Americans. During these riots there were cases of police brutality and whites being able to do whatever they choose to do, because they felt as if it was a justified reason to stop the African Americans from rioting. The Chicago Race Riots of 1919 was a major conflict that began in Chicago Illinois because of racial tension between black and whites because of cultural differences. The Chicago race riots is also referred to as the “Red Summer” because of all the bloodshed that took place the summer after World war 1. The race riots began on July 27th, 1919 and ended August 3rd, 1919. On the first day of the riots thirty eight people died, 23 were black, 15 were white and 537 people. The deadliest race riot in the United States occurred between May 30 and June 1, 1921. The city of Tulsa grew from 10,000 to 100,000 in just 11 years (3.) Down town Tulsa offered all white residents anything from furniture stores to speakeasies (3.) Segregation forced African Americans to create their own community. Under the Declaration Independence, it says that everyone has the right to life. In America that does not apply to black people. In the early 1920s, there was a large race riot in Tulsa around 300 innocent black people were killed. It started when black shoe shiner Dick Rowland was arrested after being accused of assaulting a white woman in elevator published by a paper eager to win the local circulation war with the title “To Lynch Negro Tonight”. Whites gathered outside the courthouse of where Rowland was being held to lynch him, blacks came from Greenwood to protect Rowland. For an African-American during the New York City Draft Riots of 1863 the events that took place would be described as nothing less than horrific. This was caused when the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln on Jan. 1, 1863. This stated all slaves within any State, or designated part of a State still in rebellion shall be granted freedom. If any southern state returned to the Union between September and January, whites in that state suppositionally would not lose ownership of their slaves. Despite its limits, free blacks, slaves, and abolitionists across the country considered it as one of the most important actions on behalf of freedom in our nation's history.

Dick Rowland (African American) was being tried for attack and attempted rape of a white woman named Sarah page. On the day of May 31, of 1921, Ms. Page opened the elevator and Mr. Rowland went to enter the elevator. He tripped because the elevator did not stop moving the way it should have, and so he grabbed what there was so he did not fall; and that happened to be Ms. Page’s arm. She let out a sharp scream and a clerk from not too far away Saw Mr. Rowland run out of the building and Later he was tried and as some white believe he did try to rape her as on the other hand African Americans did not believe in what was said what so ever.

Racism and segregation has a mass history in the United States which impacted our society greatly. There were many riots, boycotts, and strikes which occurred throughout the 1900’s. Many people simply wanted peace and to bring everyone together no matter what race or color and others wanted to be separated from people with a different skin color and race. Whites and blacks were being separated from bathrooms and even restaurants. This resulted in conflict between our society which left many killed and injured. It took so much power to bring our society together as a whole. Riots after riots occurred all across the United States and one of the known on which happened in 1919 was the race riots in Chicago. Reconstruction, whether that be good or bad, was a huge part of the 1860s. Major groups such as African Americans and Southerners were both deeply affected. However, the effect was super circumstantial for both groups. Problems in agriculture, government, the community, and some organizations were some of the defining moments in these two groups.

In 1908, a violent 2-day race riot in Springfield, Illinois drove thousands of African-Americans from the city. There was news in Springfield, Illinois about a white woman being assaulted by a black man. Soon after, a similar incident happened. These incidents happened one after another with just hours in between. An angry mob of whites soon formed in response. Two African-American men, Joe James and George Richardson, were said to be guilty in committing these crimes and the mob showed up to the Sangamon County Courthouse to lynch the two men. This resulted in the destruction of many minority owned businesses.

The 1920s was a time in which traditional values were constantly being challenged by new ones. Issues such as racism, labor conflicts, women's rights, and immigration were a few factors that led to the tension between old and new. Due to this tension, incidents such as lynchings, riots, violent strikes and protest began to occur rapidly throughout America. This underlying debate of new and old came to define this time in history and created the magnitude of the 1920s.
