Virtues are only acquired through the habituation of doing the right things voluntarily. Aristotle also believed that a person doing the right thing and reaching the mean of a virtue should be brought pleasure by their actions. In a class discussion we defined character as the sum of all of our virtues, combined with how we use those virtues to influence our decisions and actions. The virtues I found most applicable in this case study are: integrity, humility, and loyalty. Integrity is a very influential virtue in this case, as
Essential Virtues: Achieving a Good Life Man has always sought after what he deemed a “good life”. A good life is being able to achieve one’s goals, pursuit of happiness, or when life’s blessings outweigh the burdens. Virtues help guide one to become morally excellent and live a fulfilling life. A virtue can be a behavior, personality trait, or habit that affects one’s emotions, perceptions and choice in life.
Virtue is defined in many ways. Some say that it comes from the Latin word ‘virtus’, meaning virtue or courage, which comes from the other Latin word ‘vir’, which means man, meaning that virtue is the qualities of a man, such as courage. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines virtue as, “conformity to a standard of right [and/or] a particular moral excellence” (Merriam-Webster 899). With all these definitions floating around, it is hard to determine what virtues really is and what it really means to have virtue. In Plato’s Meno, Socrates and Meno discuss the definition of virtue and whether it can be taught. They conclude that virtue cannot be taught, “that virtue comes to the virtuous [(those who possess virtue)] by the gift of God” (Plato
The use of pathos, ethos, logos, and kairos in a writing piece can enhance the message that is being depicted through it. Adding pathos to a writing piece with give your reader an emotion connection and reaction to your piece. Ethos gives a piece more credibility while logos relies on the reader’s logic to convince them of a concept or idea. Kairos is the timing of when you state something. Each of these concepts can give support to a writing piece and help appeal to your audience.
In the book, ‘The Death Cure’, by James Dashner there are an adequate amount of figures of speech which are pretty interesting.Figures of speech is a good strategy writers intelligently manipulate in order to keep interest and suspense. James Dashner mainly used hyberboleshyperboles, metaphors and personification since it lets the reader close their eyes and imagine them being in the book. Figures of speech helps the reader feel like they are understanding what the characters are experiencing.
I really like this article, and agree with most of his point. One of the quote in the article that like the most is when the author says, “a life that exhibities the virtues is for that very reason a better life: not because the act of virtuous have good consequences;” I agree with this quote because people are more likely have different attitude in different situation. The way we act, we think and do what we do is more depend on the norms rather than the compassion in our heart. We do something good by helping people out is the thing that we feel like we want to do. When we try to help someone who needs us; we will automatically feel happy in our heart.
Another virtue I have learned is the value of my faith. In religion class and from my parents, I have learned the importance of God. God will always have my back and wants what is best for me.
Critical Review Military Fraud: The Myth of Automatic Virtue The short story by Steve Gillman was written on the bases of his personal beliefs on the praises military received from just by joining. He starts the essay with a short paragraph saying “It is about cultural mythology that has been created in the United States, which makes all soldiers into “heroes” (Gillman 679). The most important part of this quote was that by reading it the readers would understood that he was clearly against that all soldiers where no heroes.
The great Aristotle declared, “We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly.” Virtue should be defined as perfect or righteous. However, it can be argued that because Ransom is a man, and man is sinful, he could not choose to be virtuous. Because this is the case, and man is inherently sinful as Jesus said in Matthew, “No one is good but One, that is, God” (Mark 10:18), we will adapt Merriam Webster’s definition of virtue, “Conformity to a standard of right, morality. A particular moral excellence” (merriam-webster.com). By this definition we can present our thesis; Ransom chose to be virtuous while on Malacandra. He chose to befriend Hyoi the hross, he chose to accept the
Virtues can play a big role in achieving economic success. Virtues-driven firms are more likely to maximize profits. However, acting virtuously does not always result in high profit because there are also many factors in business life. To accomplish a success, there needs to be number of goals within a business.
Intellectual virtues which come from practical and theoretical wisdom. This requires experience and knowing the right way to do the right thing. This is reason in the strict sense. Then there are virtues of character e.g. courage and generosity i.e. moral virtues. and play a crucial role in perfecting our desires and emotions e.g. fear and greed, that we can become victim too.
Reflection 3: Jokes, Riddles and Proverbs Since I came from a Mexican background, I have been exposed many of its traditions and customs throughout my life. One of the many traditions I have learned throughout my life as a member of the Mexican community is the use of dichos. Dichos or “sayings” as I like to define the term, is a form of a proverb. A proverb is a short metaphorical statements that are constantly been used throughout the one’s own community.
Published in 1981, Chronicle of a Death Foretold is one of the most famous works created by prominent Columbian novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez. This novella depicts the murder of Santiago Nasar, an honor killing as a revenge for Nasar’s deprival of Angela Vicario’s virginity. As opposed to the novella’s traditional society, the murder of Santiago would implicate more severe consequences for the murderers and the community in today’s society because of the changed attitude towards female sexuality and family honor or would not be possible at all due to the improved level of crime prevention.
The two important values that I have learnt are the independence and the respect. I learnt these two values since my childhood. One of the values is the independence. Independence means that you can support yourself without owning or depending on yourself concerned with livelihood or studying. You can make decision of your life without being controlled by the others. I learnt this when I was 10 years old because since at that time I was able to cook for my family. I went to the market alone, cooked the healthy food for the family and did every house work. Therefore, I became the main role of the family and independent to take care of my family.
Values are principles that people hold important to them in life. As I gotten older my values have changed based on my experience, knowledge, and goals. Since I am in college and the field of social work forced me to open my eyes to different things and ideas I would 've never thought of. Five values that are important to me while I am on this journey of becoming a social worker is my education, positive energy, not judging people based on their past, a reflect and meditate on my life, and be a generous to other.
