Eutectoid Microstructures / Metallography Report Deepti Chintalapudi, Industrial and Systems Engineering Materials Science Lab, Section #11 10/25/2015 Group Members : (This lab was done collectively by all students present on 10/21/2015) Abstract The goal of this lab was to understand the differences in microstructures of steels in the vicinity of the Eutectoid reaction in the Iron – Iron Carbide (Fe3C) phase diagram and to reconcile micro- structural observations & analysis with theoretical calculations. We started the procedure by first preparing three specimens for the experiment i.e. “Black” 1018 steel (0.18 %w/w C), “Green” 1045 steel (0.45 %w/w C), and “Red” 1095 steel (0.95 %w/w C). We first cut the specimens using the Leco CM15 CutOff machine. The specimens were then mounted using the Buehler Simplimet 2 Mounting Press machine. Then, the specimens were polished using the Buhler grinder and Struers TegraPol + grinder. Finally, each specimen was etched and then observed under a microscope. From the observations, it was noticed that the Black specimen had significantly more pro-eutectoid ferrite than pearlite; the Green specimen had lesser pearlite than pro- eutectoid ferrite; and the Red specimen had more pearlite than pro- eutectoid ferrite. Inverse Lever Law calculations were then done and the calculated and assumed microconstutuent abundance values were compared. The objectives of the lab were thus met. …show more content…
