‘Community gardens are open spaces managed and operated by members of the local community for a variety of purposes’ (Holland, 2004). Community gardens have become recently more popular, particularly in urban areas, bringing together members of a community to cultivate land. Community gardens vary enormously in what they offer (Ferris et al, 2001). There are multiple benefits of these gardens, such as; increased community cohesion, health and social, opportunity for physical activity, opportunities for disadvantaged people, less waste, increased consumption of fruit and vegetables, more compositing, less pollution, etc, (Sands, 2006). There are multiple resources of relevant and supporting literature, globally, nationally and locally on recent projects and research. …show more content…
Findings reveal that few well-designed research studies have been completed to evaluate how dietary influences are affected by community gardens (McCormack et al, 2010). However, using qualitative semi-structured interviews in a research project in Melbourne, the results revealed multiple health benefits, such as improved mental health, a sense of worth and involvement, social support, nutritional benefits and increased physical activity, (Kingsley et al, 2009). Alaimo et al (2008) collected data in Michigan, through questionnaires among 766 participants to determine the association between participation in community gardens and fruit and vegetable consumption among adults. Households with a member who participated in a community garden consumed fruit and vegetables 1.4 more times a day than those who did not participate, and were 3.5 times more likely to consume them at least 5 times
In many cases, the local food pantry may be a far drive and residents do not have proper transportation to get there.2 Even if residents are able to go to food pantries, typically there is not a lot of fresh food due to the expenses of keeping fresh food refrigerated. Vandhana Ramadurai and colleagues focus-group study expresses incidences of these food disparities. Participants stated, “From the Food banks, you don’t get any fruits and vegetables. You can get beans and rice.
While community garden was one of the solutions, they could not have solved everything that happened during the great depression. While the establishment of community gardens during the Great Depression provided a temporary solution to shortages of food, it did not address the deeper economic and social factors that caused the crisis in the first place.” While it is evidenced that the community garden in this study contributes to individual, household, and community food security, additional help is needed in the form of education, policy, and funding to increase food security and promote healthy lifestyles” (Corrigan, 2011). Community gardens alone could not tackle the bigger problems that existed at the time, such as poverty, unemployment, and economic injustice. Furthermore, not everyone had access to these plots of land or a community garden to participate in, and without proper training, many were bound to fail.
People love serenity (Basic). People love customisable items. People love gardens (Parallel). People around the world keep gardens. Whether their gardens provide them with food, beauty, or a place to hold parties, people keep gardens for many reasons.
With a big city comes big diversity. My hometown, the city of Chicago, not only is diverse because of the people, but it is also very diverse because of the food. If you were to visit the top floor of the Willis Tower, or as my fellow Chicagoans would refer to it as the Sears Tower, you would be able to see majority of Chicago, and its various components. My hometown of Chicago has actually tried to be more organic and be more involved in the food movement, as well. Even within my neighborhood, which is a primarily Hispanic neighborhood, has tried to be more organic.
There are issues that come up when talking about these precise geographic are being affected the most without receiving the fair chance of having healthy meals to eat every night. Some people believe that there is no way that some geographies will tell you that you cannot receive the nutrients food one needs to have a healthy diet. There are various ways one can receive the sufficient healthy foods one needs, and it is nothing based on geographic or the color of your skin. “Pennsylvania passed a Fresh Food Financing Initiative, which offered grants and loans to supermarkets willing to open in distressed neighborhoods and helped smaller stores expand their supplies of fresh food.” (Gilligan).

Every day bees are disappearing from their colonies at dangerously rapid rates. Everyone should become bee keepers and/or have bee gardens. It is the peoples’ duty to protect and save the bees. Bees play a major role in our everyday lives, and they go unnoticed. Without bees our food supply would quickly decrease.
A study by Knai et al (2006) showed that for children to consume more fruit and vegetables nutritional education should be combined with greater access to fruit and vegetables in school settings, which the School fruit and vegetable scheme provides. An analysis of schemes providing fruit and Vegetable to school children by de Sa and Lock (2007) showed that children receiving fruit and vegetables in school had a significantly increased daily intake than children who did not. There was no significant change in fruit and vegetables consumption once the children grew out of the programme, but this could be due to economic or personal reasons on their parent’s behalf, so universal provision is considered a positive (Wells and Nelson,
Who do you imagine when someone says food insecurity or hunger? Do you imagine someone severely underweight? Or maybe children in third world countries because surely hunger isn 't here in the United states. But, in fact, hunger is here in the United States, the documentary A Place at the Table defines someone who is food insecure as someone who does not know where their next meal is coming from, they have no idea how to manage, find, or afford food.
Introduction As the world’s population continues to migrate and live in urban areas, planners, engineers, and politicians have an important role to ensure that they are livable and sustainable. But what defines an urban area and what makes it so attractive? In my opinion, urban areas are places that consist of a variety of land uses and buildings, where services and amenities are easily accessible to the general public, and includes an established multimodal transportation network. Also, it should be a place where people can play, learn, work, and grow in a safe and collaborative manner.
A great garden can add aesthetic appeal and even boost the value of your home, and the good thing is that you can achieve this objective whether you live in the country, the suburbs, or the city. In fact, you can even use raised beds, if where you live has little to no actual grass, to create a beautiful outdoor oasis teeming with plant life. It’ll take a lot of work on your part, but by rolling up your sleeves and getting your hands dirty, you can wind up with the sort of produce or flower garden that, with regular maintenance, sprouts back to life year after year. If you want to give it a try, read on for some tips on how to have your perfect home garden.
The Food Share program in Toronto has realized that “it is not children’s tastes that are the barrier to healthy eating in a new food system” so they asked what is it (Food Share Toronto 4)? To find this answer they facilitated 720 student nutrition programs in 502 schools throughout Toronto where 174,000 children eat healthy on a daily basis (Food Share Toronto 6). They found that students enjoyed their meals and that 86% support the plan to support farmers who grow food to bring to the school cafeteria (Food Share Toronto
The first article in which photo voice was the method of research used was an article in which researched community health, in relation to a community-based participatory research. It looks at the benefits and negatives of using photo voice as a method of data collection in relation to health promotion research as well as a method of revealing neighborhood residents perspectives on community as a source of health opportunities or barriers (Nykiforuk, Vallianatos, & Nieuwendyk, 2015). The participants took photos of things or places that they felt helped or hindered them from being physically active or eating healthy within their community (Nykiforuk, Vallianatos, & Nieuwendyk, 2015). The target population was communities that were partnered with Community Working Groups (CWG).
Gone are the days when I would be eating fast food on a frequent basis. These days, I have a healthy salad for lunch and try to avoid anything too greasy after work. I believe gardening would have similar impacts on anyone else who has had an unhealthy lifestyle. Gardening is a great way to teach kids about responsibility.
