As a teacher, it is important to be introduced and retrained on information which provide all teachers the best tools to be able to help their students succeed. The training requires a day to which is called “Professional development” even though many teachers frown upon professional development days as they believe their time on that day could be used in improving their IEP and/or lesson plan, organizing their classroom and/or a day without disruption of a student to complete grading. Teachers tend to forget professional development are to ensure they are up to standards on a new curriculum and/or providing strategies to help them become better while approaching students and their needs. This training will provide strategies to be used with special educational students within ELA and Mathematics lessons.
How it supports your school’s goals:
As each special and regular education student is require to take the state standardize test, this training will help the teachers provide the students who struggle with a particular curriculum with specialize tools/strategy to overcome their difficulties with data and guidance.
How it supports teacher performance/student data analysis:
As teachers are evaluated on their student’s performance based on the state standardize test the training will provide additional support not only for the teacher, but the administration staff to be able to help those teacher with specific accommodation their students need. In addition, a student who is not label as special education, but is within Tier 2 level of RTI will also be accommodated with strategies and tools. For the students within special education and Tier 2 level, the data collected is focus on what the teacher is teaching the students prior to them being administrated the state standardize test. This will determine if the student was provided with enough information to be able to hold them accountable of their lack of knowledge, but train the teacher to help them meet their full standards. For the teacher who providing the students with the information needed to comprehend the material and still is unable to retain the information, the student will be provided interventions to help in the next grade
This is a key part in schools today because it’s enforcing a higher bar of achievement for teachers and students (Catapano, 2018). Implementing standards into a school system that are internationally benchmarked means all states and countries have a way of measuring their academic performance. They can use this also as a tool to compile scores and understand the weaknesses to improve students’ knowledge. This provides teachers with various ways to assess their students more frequently through observations and informal assessments to understand the student’s comprehension level of the lesson material. It will help the teachers to strive to improve her test scores by adapting lesson materials to the needs of each
The engagement of teachers using data to examine the needs of diverse learners and struggling students, will help determine the structure and content of professional development. Teachers are encouraged to incorporate their newly
The author explains that multiple means of data collection must be used to identify students. Additionally, assessments tools used by educators must be reliable and valid. Furthermore, educators need to frequently gather data on students who are considered at risk several times per year in the areas of reading and math. The author further explains that a team of educators should identify evidence-based instructional strategies the general education teacher should apply before making a special education referral for services.
The researcher compared data of the number of general education teachers, special education interventionists, and paraprofessionals or teaching assistants in each district. These numbers would be used to account for data such as special education teacher caseloads, ratio of special education paraprofessionals serving students with disabilities and data such as FTE (full time equivalency) receiving special education services. FTE refers to the full-time student count in the Ohio EMIS report, which is used for funding at state and local levels. Special education students are also denoted in EMIS with category of disability (ODE, 2017).
Students are then standardized to the
The one solution that most school has pushed for is a strong response to instruction (RTI) framework used for reading and math. RTI allows for student to receive instructional support for needs academically. RTI must be attempted before a child is referred to special education. This is to help decrease the amount of children who are
Based on classroom assessments and performance, Devan exhibits weaknesses in reading, writing and math. He requires specially designed instruction to meet grade level expectations in these areas. The frequency of special education services and support within his Regular ed. classroom has been decided as such 5 days per wk for 45 mins/reading, 2 days per wk for writing/math 60 mins within his regular education classroom. The team decided “Reg” educational placement was appropriate at this time due to the level of intensive support needed for Reading.
Special education services, such as speech therapy, resource classes, and self-contained classes, are considered Tier 3 services. Tier 3 services typically require students to have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) because they offer specially designed instruction. MTSS is intended to address both academic and emotional-behavioral difficulties, and this study will address a Tier 1 universal behavior
There are also much better ways to test a student’s capability to learn; a 2006 Center on Education Policy conducted a study and found that a curriculum that follows state standards and uses the test data as feedback led to higher scores than those that prioritized test-taking skills. When teachers are more focused on teaching material rather than test strategies, their students benefit from it (“Do Standardized Tests Show an Accurate View of Students’ Abilities?”). Several alternative methods to state assessments for measuring a student’s academic success include comparing high school graduation rates and the number of dropouts, offering advanced placement courses, and looking at the percentage of the former students that are admitted to colleges. State assessments are more harmful than helpful to students; they are a large cause of test anxiety and a majority of teachers can never fully prepare their students. Although state assessments are an easy way to be able to see the growth of students, that does not mean that they are the best

They must be the primary means of determining the yearly performance of the state, each school district, and each school in meeting the act's academic achievement standards. The achievement standards must be aligned with state content standards, and have three levels of achievement or mastery - basic, proficient, and advanced. (Common Core State Standards Initiative) Any test administered must be the same for all children (there are allowable accommodations for certain students); be aligned with state content and achievement standards; provide coherent information about students' attainment of the standards; and be valid and reliable for the purposes for which they are used and consistent with relevant nationally recognized professional and technical standards (Yell). Tests must objectively measure achievement, knowledge, and skills and not evaluate personal or family beliefs or disclose personally identifiable information.
As future educators, it is important to be fully knowledgeable about professionalism in the field and what conduct is expected within the schools and community. In order to gain that knowledge, Pennsylvania’s Code of Professional Practice and Conduct for Educators as created by the Pennsylvania Department of Education lays it all out. The mission of this is to “establish high standards for preparation, certification, practice, and ethical conduct in the teaching profession” (2002, PA Dept. of Education, p.1). Right away this relates to daily issues in the classroom because, sadly, not all teachers are fully equipped with this knowledge when they begin their teaching career. To me, the purpose section of this document is the most important because
Through professional development and continuing education courses, I will be able to better educate my students, and provide knowledge to my colleagues to help all educators better educate our students. Continuous learning can help establish leaders amongst students and
When I decided to train to become a professional school counselor, I knew I had a long road ahead. I am trained to be a teacher, a special education teacher to be specific, and though I will be able to use much of my past experience as a classroom teacher in my school counseling practice, I am aware that I will also need to see my students in a new way, a more holistic way. I will need to focus not only on what works in the classroom, but what works in order to motivate and support the students with whom I meet. It is essential for me to determine what will drive me, inspire me to be the best school counselor for both my school and students, therefore, I must determine my professional philosophy of education and school counseling and develop my beliefs, vision and mission statements.
Special Education is an umbrella title for an educational department that focuses on the rehabilitation of students and providing services for students who require extra academic support to be successful in the current school setting but are also in need of learning life skills that will help them to be successful later. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines special education as “classes or instruction designed for students with special educational needs” (Merriam-webster.com, 2017). To assist students with disabilities, the United States government continues to use the current reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 2004 which is currently known as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of December 2015
