Before this happened a police officer told John Ramsey that he could go look around and see if anything in the house is missing (Brennan). Her body was found with tape over her mouth, a cord around her neck and wrist. During the autopsy they discovered that she suffered a fracture on the right side of her skull from an unknown object. The cause of death would be known as “asphyxia by strangulation associated with craniocerebral trauma. Also, there were signs of sexual assult but they are not sure when this happened. Days after JonBenets murder, there was strange behavior of her parents this included an interview they had. On January 1, 1997, Patsy and John Ramsey went on CNN news for an exclusive interview, just after 24 hours after they buried JonBenet. On the note, the killer demanded $118,000, one hundred thousand of it being in one hundred dollar bills and the rest in twenty dollar bills. The killer stated , "She is safe and unharmed and if you want her to see 1997, you must follow our instructions to the letter."

Eventually, the story would expand within the entire United States.
The police investigating the crime said that the way the body was placed seemed like a cover-up for the crime, but could have also been moved by the father who found and picked her up, and that the ransom note was staged by Patsy Ramsey. In 2002 the DA reinvestigated the case, this time they looked at people that were not related to JonBenet as suspects. In 2008 the DA sent out an apology letter to the ramseys declaring that the family was completely cleared from the crime, and in February 2009 the Boulder Police reopened the investigation. There are two main theories about who killed JonBenet Ramsey one of the two is the Intruder Theory, Smits Theory was a theory that someone had broken into the ramseys
This was due in part to the ransom note being written on a note pad with a pen of the Ramsey’s. A handwriting expert looked into the ransom note and determined it was written by the mother Patsy Ramsey. There was also a practice ransom note that was found after the original ransom note. It would be easy to see why the police department focused so much of the investigation on the parents. The grand jury indicted the parents in 1999 for their part in the murder, but the judge dismissed the indictment due to lack of evidence.
The Blow to the head, which would have rendered her unconscious and giving the appearance of being dead, would have caused the mother to panic and attempt to formulate a plausible explanation. However, after noticing the child was not dead, had to complete the act in the basement, thus the scream heard by the neighbor and the transfer of fibers from her clothing to the garrote, tape, and blanket (Who Killed the Pageant Queen? JonBenét Ramsey Documentary, 2016). These actions and the fact that Mr. Ramsey does not state that his wife was in bed or that she showered and dressed before him gives rise to the question of whether or not
The murder of JonBenet Ramsey was discovered following the discovery of a ransom letter found by her mother Patsy Ramsey on December 26, 1996 (Saferstein, 2015). There were numerous mistakes made by the Boulder Colorado Police Department. The house was not secured, moreover, not preserved as a crime scene. The ransom letter alone should have prompted the law enforcement officers on scene to secure the house to preserve any evidence. The letter was found at the foot of the stairs within the residence indicating an intruder had in fact entered the Ramsey residence.

The murder of Jonbenet Ramsey is a really depressing and mysterious at that. The murder was extremely brutal, she had wounds on her face, a cracked skull, duct tape on her mouth, she was tied up, and she had a garrote around her neck. According to the documentary we watched she was hit in the head with a flashlight and then strangled with a garrote. It was expected that she snatched a piece of pineapple from her brother’s bowl in which he hit her with a flashlight because of it, and she was still alive so it was most likely the parents got in on it because they didn’t want to be filed for abuse and jailed so they strangled her to death and put a blanket over her body, breaking a window and adding a ransom note to make it seem like someone broke in.
