Head injuries have evolved into such a heavy topic, that many football programs are starting to take initiative, to show players in any level of football, the basics of how to properly tackle the opponent. For unknown reasons, defenders have forgotten the correct way to tackle and this has led to most of the injuries that have been accumulating over time. Nowadays, squaring up, thrusting your hip into your target and wrapping up, has been out the window. This tactic is overwhelming, as defenders have now become human torpedoes. By forcibly launching themselves into their target, they are putting both players at high risk of serious I hurt. This unprofessional and dangerous form of bringing down someone is highly likely to create a helmet to helmet to collision, resulting in concussions. Programs such as “Heads Up Football” were created with the idealistic purpose to show the players how to properly tackle. The NFL commissioner is behind this program due to the fact that he believes, by affecting the learning process in the football, little leagues, this will impact the future of the NFL. Strictly because the foundation of football is now being taught on how accurately and precisely perform a tackle. The NFL has changed a lot since it first started in 1920. There were twenty-eight teams in the NFL then. Players were smaller physically. During games players were interchangeable and played every play. That caused teams to have more two-way players. There were less offensive and defensive designed plays. African-Americans were banned from the NFL in 1933 to 1945. Most teams were run dominant so they rarely threw the ball. As years went on the NFL improved in numerous ways. Players had an increase in physical size. Players began to train to improve their game performance. The NFL grew to thirty-two teams. Each players size were specific for each position. People think banning football would decrease the amount of head injuries, “Characterized by hard tackles and intense speeds, the sport is conducive to a number of serious injuries, but there is one that has received a substantial amount of attention: mild traumatic brain injury and concussions” (Grush). Injuries can be prevented by the coaches focusing more on tackling the right way to anticipate injuries having to do with not doing it the right way. Also, most deaths having to do with football do not have to do with concussions, but with heat strokes. This can be prevented by pushing back the practicing season for football. Another thing, kids and parents know what they are getting into with the dangers and all, but they sign up anyway. People believe that concussions and deaths are the results of football, but the good outweighs the bad and the concussions can be prevented
FOOTBALL FOOTBALL. The game of American football as played today by high school, college, and professional teams grew out of rugby-style football which in the mid-1870s replaced a largely kicking game known as association football. Although initially played on village greens and on college fields, the first intercollegiate game took place on 6 November 1869 when Rutgers defeated Princeton 6–4 in a soccer-style game. Five years later, Montreal's McGill University playing at Harvard introduced rugby football, which would be rapidly adopted by eastern teams. The organization was later renamed for Glenn Scobie "Pop" Warner, best known as a college coach at Carlisle Indian School, the University of Pittsburgh, and Stanford University. Beginning in 1947, the Pop Warner Leagues initiated their own national championship modeled after college and professional competitions in football and other sports. Professional football had originated in the towns of western Pennsylvania and taken root in the smaller cities of Ohio. In this unforgiving environment, it is all to common for former stars to flare out with career-ending injuries. As I kicked off my research on the National Football League (NFL), I intended to report on these injuries.
Many people understandably think that football is just too violent to have around. Most players however, will not suffer major health effects or degenerative brain diseases later in life. Football isn’t too dangerous or immoral to watch or play.
