“America Needs its Nerds” Analysis Leonid Fridman’s use of irony, the rhetorical triangle, and rhetorical questions in his article “America Needs its Nerds” develops his argument that American society should be more accepting of intellectuals. His tone is critical of society’s values, which is seen through his use of phrases such as, “there is something very wrong with the system of values,” (1). Through his reference to Harvard University, a “prestigious academic institution” (11), he demonstrates that society tends to look down upon intellectuals by revealing that many students are “ashamed to admit” (13) the amount of time they spend on their studies. The fact that even at Harvard, a school known for its focus on intellectualism, students still perpetuate the anti-intellectualism stereotype shows the extent of the problem with the values of America’s current society.
Literature is composed with many thoughts and ideas, the limitations are miniscule. For example, Sylvia Plath formulated her experiences and time period into a plot to compose her novel. As the book progresses, the protagonist provides insight on her journey and struggle to find happiness. In The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath utilizes an autobiographical protagonist to express purity versus impurity, as well as mind versus body in a world of double standards.

The last time I visited my friend, Lonnell I was praying on my way there and asking the Lord what I could say or do to encourage her. The thought entered my mind that I should sing to her. Now I can't say as I've ever done that before; gone to visit someone in the hospital and break out in song. However, I had a strong feeling about this the entire drive there so I thought maybe I should sing her favorite hymn since I knew she loved the old hymns.

The Five Steps The literature suggests that God was a prominent figure in their lives after the main character has experienced a great amount of suffering. God was to be absent to them until he or she ascended onto a high level of anguish and suffering. According to Anglo Saxon literature, God’s purpose is to make humans suffer so people can see their true selves or reflect to repent. God’s plan for life is prominent in the most famous Anglo Saxon literature, Beowulf, where God uses Gendel as a way to make the Geats and Dains suffer. Grendel being his messenger from hell, preaches to Beowulf and the others by leaving the malled and distorted bodies of their loved ones in their homes, explaining to them that this is what God wants.
Funes is a young man who had been thrown by a horse when he was a child, and then he becomes handicapped. The life for him was like a dream because “he lost consciousness” (p.114). This is similar to Plato’s idea in The Republic. One of the metaphors he uses is to compare eye with sight. He states that having eyes doesn’t mean seeing things.

When we define something it is because we want to understand it. We want to understand it because our knowledge of it is unacceptable. We aren't satisfied with what we know, but we learn to accept either the offered definition or the lack thereof. To accept something is to tolerate it, tolerance is the allowance of an occurrence of something one does not necessarily agree with yet does not interfere with. By tolerating something we allow uncertainty, uncertainty leads us down a journey of self-discovery, on this journey we learn to either accept uncertainty or define the term for ourselves in a most meaningful way.
