Demonstrative Communication Communication is key to our everyday lives, as well as success in the business world. There are various types of communication, verbal, written, and demonstrative, such as body language and facial expressions. Demonstrative, or nonverbal, communication typically augments verbal communication, either intentionally or unintentionally. The intended message may become completely misconstrued if the wrong type of demonstrative communication is given off or perceived by the audience. Things such as making eye contact, hand gestures, or even the way a person is sitting can change the entire tone of the communication. Research suggests that 55% of the communication between people is relayed nonverbally (Quintanilla & Wahl, 2014). In our social lives, demonstrative communication can show the relationship between two people to total strangers. For example, the space between two people can indicate what type of relationship they have. Two people who are in a relationship may sit close to one another or hold hands (Manero, 2014). Appearance can also play a role in communication before ever speaking a word. Job interviews are a prime example of where appearance matters. A person who is serious about the job will dress professionally and make sure his or her appearance is appropriate for the occasion. First impressions are important and no matter how well an interview goes if you do not look the part you are less likely to get the job. The opposite
