Creative Brief: Appealing to Pathos, Logos, Ethos, and Kairos in Advertisements For my poster, I addressed the difficulties of the beginning of the spring semester in college, displaying how stressful reading new syllabuses and deadlines can be and for my additional advertisement, I addressed how overwhelming the spring semester can be for students and included stress-reducing tips and advice for a successful semester. Essentially, I appealed to logos, pathos, ethos, and kairos in both my poster and brochure by providing information, establishing credibility, using relevant phrases, and appealing to a specific audience at a specific point in time. The term "pathos" refers to the way emotions and feelings are evoked in an audience. In my poster …show more content…
For my poster, I established logos by addressing the benefits of taking a break when feeling overwhelmed with schoolwork, reminders, and notifications. By addressing the benefits and importance of taking a short break in college, I appealed to logical reasoning by stating specific examples of how taking a break during schoolwork and studying can be beneficial and even help students perform better when they are more rested. Moreover, by addressing the importance of taking a break, I supported my main point of view on the issue of feeling stressed and overwhelmed in college by addressing specific reasons the spring semester or the beginning of any semester can cause many students to stress, including syllabus week, adjusting to new classes, and viewing deadlines for various assignments. Furthermore, I appealed to logical reasoning in my poster by stating how all college students experience some form of stress and that the beginning of the spring semester can be stressful, so that the audience may understand why the benefits of taking our break are significant to my main point. By using logical reasoning to support my point, I desired to develop pathos and logos through the same information by explaining the benefits of taking a break, which appeals to logos by providing important information and pathos by creating empathy in a student audience who can understand the …show more content…
I created ethos in my poster regarding an issue that is faced by college students by establishing credibility as a college student by including relatable graphics and information that establishes a mutual understanding between college students. Initially, I created a graphic that displays a cellphone with canvas notifications and reminders that can be relatable to college students, and since canvas is used by all students that attend Saint Johns River State College, it establishes credibility with a specific audience. By presenting a realistic and relatable graphic, it helps the audience understand that this specific viewpoint comes from another college student, so it develops ethos by creating credibility with the desired student audience. Additionally, I displayed a list with specific dates that apply to the spring semester at a specific college, so it creates ethos with a specific audience, which includes not only all college students but specifically students at Saint Johns River State College. By displaying dates, reminders, and canvas notifications, I established ethos by developing a relatable topic with a college audience. Additionally, I stated, "We've all been there," in my poster to establish credibility as a college student. In addition to
This type of analysis focuses on how the author establishes their authority and expertise on a subject, and how they build rapport and trust with their audience. This paragraph will critique the group’s ethos used throughout the essay. Ethos is the ethical appeal in communication. Katy Perry demonstrates this on her Twitter page when she made a post saying, “Happy #PRIDE month. I see you and I love you.” This is her way of showing her support of an ethical standpoint. Katy is showing an intended sign of respect for the LGBT community.
Logos, generally referring to logic, connects the reader’s reasoning through the subject. The facts presented by Wolfe such as necessary vitamins for the human body provided by plant based milk such as calcium, phosphorus, manganese and protein showed the use of logos. Pathos refers to connecting the audience through emotions. Attention getting phrases such as, Causes emotional and physical sufferings for the cow, Is for baby cows, etc. is the trick to attack the mind and thinking of the audience through emotions.
Quintyn Brady Zaivion Cade Debra Giles Molinda Hollie Zharia Simmons Title Abe Fortas makes a better argument due to his wide variety of rhetorical devices, contributing information on the circumstances of the case properly educating the audience on what’s being presented. Fortas’ management of rhetorical devices gives a clear viewpoint of different perspectives being confronted to the audience. Abe Fortas uses superb diction throughout his argument in the Tinker v. Des Moines case. For instance, “That is the basis of our national strength and of the independence and vigor of Americans who grow up and live in the relatively permissive , often disputatious society.”
Giving real-life examples, explain how YOU would use logos, ethos, and pathos in structuring a speech. When a speech pertains to logos, it appeals to one’s ability to “reason through statistics, facts, and expert testimony to reach a conclusion” (Ford-Brown 2014). Also, it can be said that it is “to convince an audience by use of logic or reasoning” (“Ethos, Pathos, and Logos”, n.d.). When using logos, such as utilizing statistics in the speech, it helps the audience reach their own understanding about the subject matter and it also gives a reliable support or background to whatever the speaker is arguing for. When a speech pertains to ethos, it means “to convince an audience of the author’s credibility or character” (“Ethos, Pathos, and Logos”, n.d.).
Ethos can be used so many different ways, which built up to make a huge important part in writing a article or
An effective rhetoric has the ability to persuade an audience using the three appeals: pathos, ethos, and logos. Using pathos, a writer is able to appear to its intended audience emotions. Whereas logos appeals to the logic side of a person. Ethos is the writer credibility. Using the Conscious Rhetorician by D. Bruce Lockerbie and Coming to Terms: Rhetoric by Brenda Lamb, this research will show how Remember the Titans and Glory Road uses effective Rhetoric to get the desire
Logos: This appeal targets the audience's rationality and reasoning abilities. It relies on reasoned arguments, facts, evidence, and logical explanations. Speakers using logos present their viewpoints as logical and well-supported, using deductive reasoning and syllogisms to demonstrate the validity of their claims. Pathos: The appeal to pathos targets the audience's emotions. By evoking emotions such as pride, love, compassion, anger, shame, or fear, speakers establish a personal connection with the audience.
Logos is the Greek term for “logic” or “reasoning.” Logos often indicate proof or evidence that supports an assertion. Using logos is an effective way to convince the audience that the information provided are both realistic and practical. In my narrative essay, I believe that pathos would have been the best concept for me to add to my piece. This is because I would want the reader to be able to feel and connect with the emotions I was having when I was losing an argument. To put them in my shoes, I would need to share with them the emotions I was feeling so they could feel empathy for me. Logos was also used for when I gave my reasoning as to why I believed that I lost the argument.
Most students think of going to college after high school, what many of them don’t know is why college is important or even what profession they want to study. Alex Tabarrok use of logos, ethos and tone help him very well in his argument that student should stop graduating in visual and performing arts and should focus on degrees that require STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) In the article “Turning In to Dropping Out”. Andrew Delbanco use of logos, ethos, tone, and counter argument help him significantly towards his argument that college is still important in the article “3 Reasons Why College Still Matters”. Both Tabarrok and Delbanco use the rhetorical device of logos well in order to support their arguments.
Logos is a very prominent rhetorical device in Lamott's argument as she is presenting several amounts of reasoning within her writing. Lamott explains that writing a first draft is allowing “childlike” expression without judgment. (1) She argues that the first draft may serve as a platform for the drafts that follow, and in turn, this allows for the refinement of ideas to occur. As Lamott describes the writing process, she also states that “if the kid wants to get into really sentimental, weepy, emotional territory, you let him.” (1) Through this she can emphasize the logicality of writing the way that you personally want to write.
The impact of advertisements over the last few decades has transformed tremendously due to the close relationship between media and pop culture. Ads have switched from simple black-and-white newspaper columns to star-studded, mascot-driven television commercials that engage the viewer on a deeper level. The reason for this switch stems from the producer’s responsibility to impose the correct ethos, pathos, and logos on the consumer to convince them to buy their product in an attention-grabbing way. Ethos refers to the credibility of a source, pathos is the emotion received, and logos deals with the logical, statistical side. In partnership with their bee mascot, the Cheerios commercial from February 2023 utilizes ethos, logos, and pathos to
The use of ethos, pathos, and logos in any type of writing or speaking can create a commanding and arresting effect on the reader/listener.
