One of these characters is Abigail Williams. She is the most despicable character because she commits adultery, lies in court, and kills her friends
Abigail is to be blamed a lot, because she seduced John Proctor even though he had a wife. Elizabeth found out about the affair and Elizabeth told Abigail not to mess with her husband or she will regret it. Abigail confesses to withcraft saying that she gave her soul to the devil. She convinced other girls to cast spells with Tituba. She carefully planned the way she accused people in the community of withcraft , so she could be credible when she accused Elizabeth.
Arthur Miller wrote the play “The Crucible”, during the “Red Scare” era. The “Red Scare” era, also known as the communist scare, was a time period where communists were often unjustly accused of plotting against the Government. Mass hysteria ensued involving these communists and many trials were had regarding these supposed “criminals”. Senator Joseph McCarthy, who accused anyone and everyone of being a communist or communist-sympathizer, single-handedly lead this hysteria. This label cause some to lose their job, have their homes vandalized, and even worse threats on their life.
During reign of Joseph Stalin, many citizens were cruelly executed without proof of their crimes. These cruel acts showed the negative probity of the Soviet Union. Similarly, act of cruelty throughout twentieth century American literature also illustrate acts of cruelty and how they render a character’s morals. Throughout American literature, characters have made cruel decisions that reflect upon their personality and rectitude.
“Vengeance is walking Salem.” (John Proctor, Pg. 77) John Proctor was correct when he said that. The people of Salem abused the law forbidding the practice of witch craft. For example, Abigail Williams made an allegation against John Proctor’s wife, Elizabeth because she fired her as their servant and John ended their affair.
Hook: Lustful wretchedness consumed a young sinful girl, putting her in a state of delusion. This girl’s actions contributed to a mass hysteria that only she could have put a stop to. Exposition: The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, is an analogy highlighting the mass hysteria of the Salem Witch Trials and the Red Scare. Thesis: The character, Abigail Williams, not only contributed to this madness but also had the ability to extinguish the hysteria but chose to feed into the idea of her being the person John Proctor would end up with. She vividly displayed signs of manipulation, menacingly actions, and conditions of derangement.
Honorable John Proctor In Salem, Massachusetts way back in 1878, hundreds of people were accused of using witchcraft. It all started from a group of girl, who went around and falsely accused people. Trials were held to determine who would confess and keep their life or who would keep to themselves and get hanged. Arthur Miller wrote a historical fiction story called The crucible.

Elizabeth, a woman who is loyal and true, or manipulative and ruthless liar, Abigail. She pretends to see spirits and commands the other girls to pretend as well.
Greatest of The Guilty The character in The Crucible who was the most guilty for the events that transpired was Abigail Williams because of her sin of lechery that led to jealousy and damaged pride, her choice to lie rather than taking responsibility, and for judging good people as being hypocritical that had to be dealt with. As a result of Abigail’s lechery with John Proctor, she felt jealous towards Elizabeth Proctor and judged by the other townspeople. Her jealousy and pride made people targets during the witch trials. When talking to John she states, “She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me!
Abigail Williams’ Influence Is it okay for a person to lie and hurt other people just to keep him or herself safe? In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, Abigail Williams lies, a lot, to keep herself safe. Throughout the story, many people are accused of witchcraft. When a person is accused of witchcraft, it is very easy for them to get out of the accusation if they lie. The lies that are told shifts the belief of who knows witchcraft, and Abigail Williams uses those lies to gain influence over other people.
We often hear that betrayal can lead to deadly effects, with this in mind, in the story The Cruicible, betrayal is the wall from truth. The play took place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. During this time strange acts were appearing all around Salem. As a result of these acts people blamed each other to exclude themselves from death, knowing that such acts were considered witchcraft. Abigail Williams is one of those people.
The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a play based on a true story of the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. In the Crucible, Abigail Williams, age seventeen, drives the Puritan town of Salem into insanity. She, along with a few other town girls, were caught dancing naked in the woods. To cover up their actions, the girls accuse innocent people of witchcraft and of carrying out the Devil’s work. Reverend Hale is summoned to find and destroy Salem Witches.
What if the most loved and cared for people were punished and killed because of a girl trying to cover up her own mistakes she made, but created an even bigger one by doing so. A girl named Abigail Williams went against the law along with many other girls and practiced witchery, knowing you could be killed for it. Once confronted, she took many innocent people down along with her, in hopes of covering her mistake up. By doing so, she created a mass hysteria in the small town of Salem, Massachusetts, just to save her own life. A thought out plan containing selfish acts, manipulation and hatred created a tragic mess in a once beloved town.
A crucible is a difficult test or challenge; it can also be described as a place or situation that forces people to make a difficult decision. “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller shows many different situations where people are tested. Each test reveals someone's true nature, some were brave and courageous, while others were cowards and selfish. Rebecca Nurse and Abigail Williams were both tested, and something different was revealed about each of them. Rebecca Nurse was tested throughout the book, and it was shown that she is strong and stands for what she believes in.
In 1692, Salem went through a series of trials known as the Salem Witch trials. During this time, people lied to save their lives or told the truth and executed. Innocent people lost their lives due to witchcraft, saving loved ones, and/or hiding things from the court. You are probably wondering how this all came about. Well, Abigail Williams contributed the most to the witchcraft hysteria and should be held responsible for the imprisonment and execution of innocent people.
