In the epic poem Beowulf, the archetype of the hero is shown when Beowulf uses strength, bravery, and loyalty to defeat evil. The Anglo – Saxon values these qualities. Since Beowulf was a great warrior, his name was well known for all his accomplishments. Beowulf wanted to be remember for what he did. Bewoulf wanted to be remember like his father was remember. Beowulf showed bravery when he had heard that king Hrothgar was in trouble and went to help the king immediately. Beowulf came to help the king on his own free will. He knew that he was going to be fighting a monster. So that made him brave because everyone else was scared of the monster Grendel. He saved herot from Grendel and he did what he came to do which was saved the town. Loyalty is showed when bewoulf was fighting the dragon and his men had left him their fighting the dragon while they rain to safety. Beowulf and widfalg was the only ones left fighting the dragon. He had fought the dragon because a thief had stolen the golden cup. When wiglaf had return with the riches he had heard that Beowulf had passes away. Grendel’s mom payed Herot a visit to get revenge for her son, killing men in their sleep. Beowulf showed bravery going down to the cave to fight Grendel’s mom after this. According to dictionary.com, a hero is “a person who is admired or idealized for courage and noble qualities”. After analyzing the three sources, Malala, Beowulf, and Roberto Clemente, it is obvious how they are all examples of heroes. Out of all the three sources analysed, Beowulf best represents the definition of a hero due to the fact of his courage and noble qualities, which through the use of imagery, and diction the author is able to illustrate Beowulf’s characteristics. The battles that Beowulf took part in, in Beowulf, reflect how the hero of an epic performs courageous, sometimes even superhuman deeds that reflect the values of society. When Beowulf Beowulf was battling with Grendel, a powerful monster, Beowulf ripped apart Grendel’s body with his bare hands. For doing this deed, the people of the kingdom saw Beowulf as a paragon, he fought for honor, and to show his bravery. Beowulf then had to battle Grendel’s mother, who was attempting to avenge her son’s death. Beowulf used a weapon to slay her that no ordinary man could lift.
Nobody had even asked Beowulf to stay and battle with her, he did it out of cordiality. This shows that he was selfless, and put others needs before his. He was also viewed per spacious, considering he had made the bold move of stepping up to the plate to reign over his country, and to be fearless going into fighting a perilous dragon. He did travel across the sea to kill a demon and then the demon’s mother for what seemed to be good will. Beowulf even states he is helping Hrothgar since he had helped Beowulf’s father in the past and Beowulf is returning the favor. Yet, Beowulf is still acting on his pride. He wants to defeat Grendel being that no one has been able to in the past and killing the monster for the Danes would surely bring him more honor and treasures. Beowulf never says that is why he is helping Hrothgar, but the context in which Beowulf says why he is there would suggest he cares more about glory than loyalty like he originally said.

Beowulf embodies many universal societal heroic values that are signified in the modern world like courage, bravery, and strength. In the poem, Beowulf displays courage. “Now, I mean to be a match for Grendel, settle the outcome in single combat” (Heaney 425-426). This quote shows courage because he’s telling them that he can fight Grendel and wants to weather he wins or loses.

He was smart and cunning, but very intelligent. Boastful but a great warrior. It was things like these that the Anglo Saxon considered the ideals of a warrior. In Beowulf, the Anglo-Saxon hero is well defined by the actions of Beowulf. Beowulf’s strength and courage are unique, and he is much more humble (and honorable) than many of the corrupt warriors around him.
These epic heroes are built through their conflicts and tones to become the archetype everyone loves. In Beowulf, “Horses, high-spirited stallions, and rode them Slowly toward Herot again, retelling Beowulf’s bravery as they jogged along.” (Beers, lines 145-147). Beowulf’s archetype of an epic hero is seen as he is one that is retold and remembered past his death. The people speak of his story and bravery, a method of passing down the epicness of Beowulf and helping to develop the archetype for such.
With the battle to protect the city against the dragon, even though Beowulf was king he fought the dragon. He fought the dragon because no one else could. No one was as selfless as he was to risk his life to protect the city. Without Beowulf these monsters would over power good and there would be no balance between good and evil.
Beowulf not only says he is stronger than everyone else but that he can kill Grendel with or without a sword. Therefore Beowulf then shows his true colors of how he is not a hero by depriving people of their lives. Beowulf is an immensely heroic person he has definitely set the foundation for all heroes today. If not for Beowulf then Grendel and his mother would have terrorized everyone and killed multiple people. Beowulf loyal and courageous enough to go up against two beasts that no one has ever beaten in the past.
An epic hero can be described as someone whose actions determine the fate of a tribe, nation, or race. Characteristics of an epic hero are courageous, devoted, loves glory, and loyalty. Beowulf fits each characteristic throughout the epic. He is distinctly known for being a warrior, a friend, and a loving leader. Beowulf is an epic hero because he has pride, loves glory, and a devoted loyalty to his followers and his country.
While others bask in their cowardly ambiance, taking shelter is the first thought to cross their mind, Beowulf on the other hand makes true to his word and time after time again slays the terrifying monster. It was almost as if he wasn't afraid of death, and if he thought that maybe he would die he still fought. No matter the circumstance he makes the best out of it and comes out victorious. The integrity and selflessness that Beowulf shows is unmatched by any other. He unlike most other heroes isn't corrupted by the riches and glory that is presented to him.
