Arther Miller’s Inspiration for The Crucible.
The book is The Crucible; written by the famous Arther Miller. A well-known drama set in the 1690’s about the fear and suspicion about witches in Salem. There are many rich characters with different motives and stories behind them. Take Abigail for example, a young girl who is notorious for accusing others of witchcraft to save her own skin. She is selfish and inconsiderate about other people's lives. But it is most interesting where the author draws his inspiration from to create characters like Abigail. The answer: himself. Arther Miller based most of The Crucible on his own life using his childhood, his marriage, and his mannerisms.

A personality study from personality-database.com states, “Arthur Miller is an INFJ personality type and 5w6 in Enneagram.” This is a fancy term that explains many of his strengths and weaknesses. According to his specific type, one of his characteristics is ‘judging”. He analyses others and compares people to people. This is a theme we saw in the Crucible when the accusations began for witchcraft. Another characteristic about Miller is he is a “serious minded individual.” This is best represented in the character; John Procter. John is always head straight and will not accept any false accusation of any innocent man. The last characteristic that the author has is his integrity. Arther Mille as a very well-respected author who has had everyone wondering what his inspiration was for some of his biggest plays. What he has endured and who he is has shaped him to write one of the most well-known plays in history. Arther Miller based most of The Crucible on his own life using his childhood, his marriage, and his mannerisms.

Hysteria spread throughout colonial Massachusetts during the Salem Witch Trials. This was a time where people were being condemned to death after being accused of witchcraft. Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible about these times. Miller developed personalities for the people who were in Salem during the Witch Trials throughout this play. Arthur Miller created many personalities one of these were individuals who felt a strong sense of duty often make unpopular choices because they felt that the choice they made was their responsibility.
The author of "The Crucible" Arthur Miller, was influenced by social problems and personal problems. Arthur Miller was experiencing problems in his marriage and was influenced by the events during McCarthyism. One theme in "The Crucible" is that people lied for both good and selfish reasons. In the story "The Crucible" a group of girls were found dancing in the woods. These girls were doing more then dancing, they were conjuring the dead.
The Crucible by Author Miller is a historical fiction based of of the Salem witch trails. During this period people where filled with greed, pride and authority. With the time being so tense made people greed and thirst for power a dangerous thing. The first ways greed was shown was through Abigail. Abigail’s greed came from the love for John Procter.

It has been adapted in many forms such as Broadway productions, plays, and movies. Although, without a doubt some adaptations are better than others.
Influenced by the non-fictional events of the Salem Witch Trials and the accusations during the McCarthy Era, Miller wrote The Crucible which portrays how mob hysteria shows how time has changed significantly throughout history by how gullible most people were, how most were innocent, and how most people were afraid of change in women’s vulnerability.

The play, which is a metaphor for the McCarthy era of the 1950s and is set in the puritanical culture of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, was written by Arthur Miller. " The Crucible" investigates how fear may proliferate like wildfire and result in devastating conduct, especially toward helpless people. Miller makes a statement in his writing on the perils of groupthink and the necessity of maintaining personal integrity in the face of peer pressure. The characters are captivated by their fear of the devil and the presence of evil throughout the entire play.
In Arthur Miller's play, dignity and reflection of one's self plays an important role in what makes up a person's character. Through John Proctor's actions and words, Miller's element of tragedy that emphasizes laying down one's life for personal dignity is demonstrated in The Crucible as people will go any extent to accomplish their desires and fight for their beliefs, despite the consequences because they are trying to protect who they are. Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible in 1953. Arthur Miller wrote the play because he was inspired by McCarthyism. McCarthyism was the hunt for communists that was taken too far. In The Crucible he presented a universal message. He was comparing how communists did exist and witches did not, but yet they were both taken as serious.
People tend to justify their actions, regardless of the outcome. With knowledge of their actions, people misemploy their authority. A remarkable playwright of the American theater, Arthur Miller continues to capture his audience with The Crucible. In the play, Miller portrays several characters, who abuses their authority. However, of the very few, Miller creates a character who makes an important contrast to these corrupt people.
Miller best depicts the evils in people through the main prosecutor in the the play Abigail Williams. Abigail is undeniably the most destructive and corrupt individual in The Crucible. Through her vengefulness, threatening her peers, carelessness at others’ expense, and complete disregard for human life, she ensues a tumultuous event to Salem. Abigail’s initial accusation against the town beggar was solely to defend herself from punishment for dancing in the woods.

The basis for The Crucible came from the witch trials which occurred in Salem, Massachusetts during the puritan era. Miller even uses some of the same characters in his dramatized play that were a part of the original witch trials in Salem. However, Miller made a few alterations to the historical members of the Salem society in order to suit his dramatic purpose in The Crucible, particularly Abigail Williams, John Proctor, and Reverend Samuel Parris.

In The Crucible, Miller juxtaposes the leaders, who rationally think for themselves, and the followers, who believe what everybody else believes, through irony, imagery, and denotation. The Crucible is riddled with irony, and Arthur Miller utilizes situational and dramatic irony to show the difference between followers and leaders.
