As human being were constantly judged by our appearance and by our actions. Sometimes the way were judged may cause people to get the wrong idea of us. Being constantly judged was a common thing in the city of Maycomb back in the 1930’s, where almost every white person was racist or discriminated the blacks. Tom Robinson was a victim to discrimination and later on lost his life for a crime he hadn’t committed. When people are perceived this way it has the ability to change people’s lives forever. Firstly, things that people say can have the power to change lives. Evidence of this is when a nasty old lady, filled with hatred named Ms. Dubose said “What are you doing in those overalls? You should be in a dress and camisole. Young lady! You’ll grow up waiting on tables if somebody doesn’t change your ways.” (116) these type of things being said can change the lives of people like scout because it could change her views (perspective) on life, as she may think whatever she is currently doing could be wrong in society just because of something a random old lady said …show more content…
Evidence of this was when the narrator said “Tom Robinson was probably the only person ever decent to her” (219). Mayella was hated by almost everyone, so when Tom Robinson was helping her she had wanted to be with him. This is proof that the actions of people can have a negative effect on others because shortly after Mayella had screamed very loudly, which had led to her father charging Tom with raping his daughter even though evidentially he didn’t do/try anything with/to her. He was wrongly accused of raping her just because he’s a black
Tom Robinson was judged for his skin color. He was black and that's the only thing the whites saw him as; he wasn't considered the same as them. In conclusion, this quote can identify with this book because you can't understand how someone feels until you walk into their shoes; see things from their perspective.
At the beginning of the novel, Jem is on the pre-conventional level; therefore, he acts childlike and wants to avoid punishment. The reason that Jem reacts this way because he does not want to be punished by society or the authority. In the novel, it implies: “ Atticus ain 't ever whipped me since I can remember. I wanta keep it that way” (Lee 56). This suggests that Jem is in the stage of obedience and punishment since he undertakes not wanting to disobey his father and does not want to be punished.
“The black man did it” she said. “Typical”, he said in response. Humans tend to judge others for many reasons. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee, it shows a great theme of judging and that you don't really know a person until you have walked around in their shoes. This story takes place in the 1930s in a small town in Alabama called Maycomb County.
She understands she must say what is needed in order to sway the jury in her favor, even if that means lying under oath. By her own volition Mayella averts the attention from her fallacious testimony, and onto Tom Robinson, a black man. By doing this, Mayella is unknowingly signing Tom’s death sentence. In any other situation, it’s man’s word against a woman's, in this case it’s a black man against a white women.
Tom Robinson, was a middle aged disabled African American. He had a family of his own and was well known for generosity and kind works. He was victim of cruelty automatically because of the color of his skin. He was accused of rape to a white young woman, which was not true. Unfortunately with all the obvious proof of proving him innocent, he was still proven guilty.
Injustice for African- Americans in the 1900’s occurred consistently even after slavery had ended in 1865. “The Murder of Emmett Till,” and the Tom Robinson case in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” show how African Americans experienced injustice. Emmett Till was a 14 year old boy from Chicago, Illinois that traveled to Mississippi to see relatives. It was there that Carolyn Bryant accused Till of whistling and verbally assaulted her.
Unethical Punishments Adults teaching children what is right and wrong can influence their behaviors and the consequences they face. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout Finch, a young, confident, headstrong girl gets punished for defending her loving father, Atticus Finch. Scout retaliated and had an altercation with her cousin, Francis Handcock after he insulted Atticus behind his back. Scout's discipline was a spanking from her Uncle Jack Finch and being blamed for swearing and punching Francis.
Punishing someone without knowing why they did what they did is unjust and unfair to the person that is receiving the punishment; however, if the punisher learns why the person did what they did, the person being punished might be exonerated of the punishment. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout, the main character, is arguing with her cousin, Francis. Francis had been calling Scout's father Atticus names, which had greatly upset Scout. Eventually, she had enough of Francis and ended up attacking him. This caused Fransis to get upset and tell Uncle Jack about Scout hitting him.
Misbehaving, such as getting into fights or arguments in any setting, is a reason for being disciplined; however, both sides should be acknowledged to end the argument amicably. In To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee, Scout, the daughter of Atticus, gets into an argument with Francis, Scout’s cousin. They get into an altercation that was started by Francis because he called Scout’s father, Atticus, a derogatory term that was seen as offensive. This caused Scout to fight Francis, and without hearing Scout’s side of the story, Scout got in trouble for it by being spanked and then locked in a room for her ‘misbehavior’. Scout was not punished fairly because no one heard her side of the story.
We live in a society today where judging others is a regular, everyday activity. Many people may blame a significant amount of this issue on the excessive amount of technology we have access too, but this problem has been around for much longer. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, it shows the ugliness that can come from judging others, but it also teaches two young children, Scout and Jem, to listen to others, so that you can have the opportunity to learn from them. Throughout the story many characters were able to demonstrate this lesson for the kids, but three that were true examples of it were Tom Robinson, Atticus Finch and Boo Radley. With only aiming to stand up for what they believe in and not worrying what everyone
Rumors. Actions. Looks. All of these are reasons why we judge one being, to think that only three factors decide how others view you. You don’t just see this type of judging in reality but in To Kill a MockingBird.
Harper Lee, the author of To Kill a Mockingbird, presents the idea that being non judgemental is demonstrated by not judging someone on one specific thing about someone even when others might judge them. Social justice requires one being non judgemental because everyone deserves being equal. The character Atticus Finch demonstrates being non judgemental by not judging people by their race, gender, and whether their an outcast or not. Atticus, a non judgemental person, because he does not not show any less respect to anyone for what color skin they have. The court appointed him to defend Tom, but, “Atticus also aims to defend him.”(163)
Can people be inhumane to others? To be inhumane means to not be kind or gentle to people or animals. “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is a social drama that shows inhumanity in a great way. A major theme in this novel is man’s inhumanity to man. The Tom Robinson plot, Boo Radley plot, and the name of the novel play a part in portraying inhumanity to others.
“[I]t’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” (Lee 90; ch. 10). The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee takes place during the 1930’s - a time heavy of prejudism. Throughout the book Harper Lee conveys a message about prejudice, telling her readers that what one may think about another is not always true. Prejudice opinions within the book affect people of different race, social class, and gender.
Children are often punished by adults who do not know the situation or what provoked them. Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird perfectly demonstrates how children are punished before they have a chance to speak. Scout the little girl of the Finch Family stood up for her father Atticus Finch when her cousin Francis started to insult him. Francis was talking badly about how Atticus was helping a black man.
