The children range in ages from 9,5,4, and 2. The patient and her husband had planned this pregnancy. After giving birth the patient had already decided to get a tubal done, so her newborn son was chosen complete their family. The patient stated that she didn’t receive prenatal care until October, which was pretty far into her pregnancy. Her reasoning behind this choice was she had four other children and “knew what she was doing.” When the patient did receive prenatal care it was through St. Luke’s South where she had planned to give birth.
Since my brother has left for college at UT Chattanooga, me and my mom have gotten closer in that way as well. My mom has to play the mother and father role for both me and my brother and I am very grateful that she is so good at it, and does everything she can to be the best for me. She has taught me to not take things for granted, and to keep looking forward and not backwards. She has taught me how to manage every issue that could possibly come my way. “My mother had a great deal of trouble with me, but I think she enjoyed it.” Mark Twain said this, which made me laugh and smile because I know my mom has had some troubles with me, but she always fights for me and does everything she can to teach me all the right things.
From an early age, I can remember taking a special interest in medicine, because of seeing my mother reach out and help so many types of people with so many levels of disabilities. Her actions and job has inspired me greatly in wanting to study in the medical field and hopefully eventually becoming a physician. Growing up, my Mother, an Occupational Therapist, owned her owned practice, when I was younger, I can remember trying to help my mother and other medical professionals that worked for her with small tasks, like help cleaning up after the children in wheelchairs or helping children, with low motor skills, coloring pictures. My mother’s job as an Occupational Therapist is to develop, recover, and improve the skills of injured and disabled patients for daily activities that we would easily take for grant, like taking a shower or walking upstairs. I believe having a career in the medical field would undoubtedly would give me an immeasurable amount of satisfactory, because of my desire of wanting to help people with their health complication.
Hickam, my mom is hard working, artistic and supportive. For example, my mom is always at all of my games, encouraging me to always try harder and do my best. My mom also helps me with getting things I need and keeping me updated with things that are going on with family. In addition to that, she makes sure my Dad is aware of what is going on with my game schedules, and makes sure he attends some of my games. My father shares some of the characteristics of Homer’s father John Hickam.

My hardiness will drive me to face each patient’s need with the stability and strength I need. This career will allow me personal happiness and to utilize skills I already have or want to gain. I have worked with children since I was 17, and have a personal connection to children with disabilities. My nephew has cerebral palsy and his daily struggles touch my heart. Helping him do ordinary tasks gives me a profound fulfillment and joy.
Growing up, both my parents have been taking medications for high blood pressure and diabetes, I had a great interest in the health field since then. After I completed my first bachelor degree in Health and Wellness, I have had the privilege of working at Rite Aid pharmacy for a little over two years. I consider my experiences and knowledge that I gained there to have been valuable in my academic career thus far. I have met and worked with local pharmacists and I hope to become one of them one day. Not only were they kind enough to offer their time in letting me shadow them, but each of them went out of their way to explain the process of filling medications in the pharmacy.
