In Kindred, Dana had a map of maryland in which Rufus didn’t like the idea of. Dana had gone back in time while Kevin was still there without her and she wanted the map just in case she needed it; Rufus did not like the idea of that map at all and had pretty much blackmailed her to get rid of it. Dana states, “ He waited watching me. I wanted to ask him what he would do with my letter if I didn’t burn the map. I wanted to ask, but I didn’t want to hear an answer that might send me out to face another patrol or earn another whipping. I wanted to do things the easy way if i could. I wanted to stay here and let the letter go to Boston and bring Kevin back to me (Butler p.143).” With this in mind, Rufus’s fear of Dana leaving him caused him to make Dana burn her map. Rufus was scared that if he had let her keep the map that she would leave him. Rufus knew that if Dana had a map then she would be able to leave him whenever she wanted and he didn’t like not being in control. The fear of what Dana might do caused distrust and corruption. Fear of what one may do also occurred in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. In Fahrenheit 451, Montag is a fireman, but not the one we know today. He, along with others, would go to people’s houses and burn their books because books had been banned. Montag had started questioning why books were banned and the chief and explained to him why. The Chief state's “Once people appealed to a few people
eThe Effects of Power Power. It is waved around carelessly because the people that have it want to use it. They believe they can control events or people just because they may be in a high position. Power can corrupt individuals and cause them to act differently. The novels Fahrenheit 451 and The Wave demonstrate how power can change people or communities.
Throughout Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury express’ how curiosity has the ability to drive one to do what is unexpected. Guy Montag is a firefighter who is completely passionate about his job in the beginning of the book because his father was also a firefighter which means he was meant to be one. The firefighters are sent to burn the hidden books as well as the houses the books are hidden inside. The books are burned because the government doesn 't want the people gaining knowledge that could overthrow them. As Montag goes around burning all the books he finds himself pondering over how the knowledge inside the books could be so powerful.
Power. A word that usually comes a negative connotation, but why? The reason could be that people have this predisposed believe that with power comes corruption, but that may not be the case. Aside from the U.S., other notable countries experiencing corruption are England, France, Russia, China, South Korea, North Korea, and
"I was not predicting the future, I was trying to prevent it" (Bradbury). The world illustrated in Fahrenheit 451 isn 't that far off from our own. Technology has become a very influential part of everyone 's lives, and has control over people’s actions and thoughts. Ray Bradbury uses the themes mass media, conformity vs. individuality, and censorship in his dystopian novel, Fahrenheit 451, to capture a futuristic world in which books are illegal and technology is consuming society. Mass media is a significant theme throughout the book, Fahrenheit 451.
Another way the corruption of power is exemplified, is in books. In William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies”, the character Jack is proven to show corruption of power. In the beginning of the story, Jack is innocent young boy who gradually becomes power hungry. When Ralph was elected as chief and it was clear that Jack wasn’t happy because he thought he was a better leader. Jack said, “I ought to be chief, because I’m chapter chorister and head boy.
In Octavia E. Butler’s Kindred, Dana and Rufus’s relationship is intricate in the following ways: Dana is more of a guardian to Rufus, Rufus and Dana become companions, and he finally starts acting like a slave owner while she starts acting like a slave that Rufus owns. Dana and Rufus’s relationship has many intricacies, one intricacy is that Dana is more like a guardian to Rufus. Whenever Rufus is in trouble Dana gets teleported back to Maryland in the 1800’s and as early as 1810. Dana has to save him from various occurrences such as a river that he was drowning in, a fire that he set and about burnt the house down, an illness he got from drinking, and finally a fight with a slave over the fact that he wanted his wife.
Contrary to what is believed, Dana does have power over Rufus, and she uses her power to remind Rufus of what she is capable of. To prove this, Butler states, “‘I said we were dangerous to each other. That’s more a reminder than a threat.’ Actually, it was more a bluff. ‘I don’t need reminders or threats from you.’”
“I thought I would die on the ground there with a mouth full of dirt and blood and a white man cursing and lecturing as he beat me. By then, I almost wanted to die,”– or so Dana physically and socially identifies the skewed dynamics existing within the South that greatly impact her overall character (107). In Kindred, a novel that collides science-fiction with historical fiction, Octavia Butler tells the story of an African American women who is forced to reconcile with oppression of the past as she is sent through time from 20th century California to 19th century Maryland, where she must protect the slave-master’s son: Rufus. Is it possible that humans will never change their corrupt nature? Is it possible to achieve a society where the poor do not suffer under the rich and women are acknowledged as equals? In “The Pearl” Steinbeck comments on this aspect of society. The novel is not merely telling a story; the one-dimensional portrayal of the rich as corrupt and evil, the poor as powerless victims, and women as strong and overlooked, reflects the real world. Steinbeck characterizes the doctor as racist, greedy and malicious.
Kindred Essay When comparing the past to the present, the differences between the two times become very apparent. The novel Kindred, by Octavia E. Butler is about an African-American woman named Dana, time traveling to the past to act as a guardian over her great-grandfather Rufus. Being an African-American woman temporarily living in the 1800s, the reader would expect Dana to have little to no power. But if the reader digs deeper, they realize that Dana has more power than Rufus because she can choose not to save him from danger, and Rufus knows this, which is why Dana gets treated better than most of the slaves on the plantation.
Famous American novelist, William Gaddis once said, “Power doesn’t corrupt people, people corrupt power.” This quote states that its humanity that is corrupting the value of power and not the other way around. Just like with the leaders in the dystopian novels of “Examination Day”, The Giver, and “Harrison Bergeron” who were and are normal people, like every other person, until they got a truckload of influence and power and they realized they could do whatever they wanted, and used it against humanity to take control. So, this comes to say that, “In dystopian novels, authors warn us about having a government that has too much power can lead to the corruption of society. “ To begin with, in the story Examination Day written by Henry Slesar, the government retains control over a lot of things by using strict laws called the “new code” which gives the government the power to control the intelligence level.
Why do some countries prosper while others stagnate? Why does almost half the world live on $2.50 a day? Why are most of the world’s nations living in poverty? In our modern world, the three main factors that determine a country’s wealth are institution, culture and geography. Rich countries have very good institutions while poor countries have extremely devastating ones.
There are quite a lot of negative outcomes from corruption. Money is lost, incompetent leaders easily come into power, and more unresolved issues are created. Godfatherism is one cause of such corruption. Battles for high political positions cost a lot of money and can become very violent. As a result, those wishing to have better campaigns against opponents have individuals, known as “godfathers”, use wealth and manipulation to get ahead.
