Many characters display acts of courage in Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible. Throughout the Salem Witch Trials, the characters are able to face the truth without the fear of losing. The three characters that show more courage than the others were John Proctor because he is honorable, Giles Corey because he is selfless, and Reverend Hale because he is brave. Throughout The Crucible, John Proctor showed immense courage when he stuck to his beliefs. In Act 3, John Proctor admits to the court his affair with Abigail Williams to save his wife’s life. He explains Abigail’s plan to kill Elizabeth Proctor and dance with him on her grave. (Miller 873). When Proctor calls Abigail a whore, he gives the court an opportunity to end the trials. Additionally,
Self-Preservation Can Lead to Self-Destruction In today’s society, a person’s reputation plays a huge part in how one is viewed and treated. The same was true for the citizens of Salem Village, a Puritan dwelling in Massachusetts. To the Puritans, self-reputation was everything. Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible, based on the Salem Village Witch Trials that took place in the early 1690s.
“It is part of a good man to do great and noble deeds though he risk everything.”, Plutarch. In the play The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, the actions of a good man are portrayed. John Proctor, a man during the time of the 1692 Salem witch trials, exhibits noble traits during the play. In the play, Proctor strongly believes in honesty, and attempts to find justice no matter the circumstances. Proctor is not a man who will put himself before others.
There is nothing wrong with pride, but there is something wrong with letting pride destroy relationships. John Proctor, from the Crucible (Arthur Miller), is a character of many words. Whether he be proud, stubborn, foolish, or noble, the decision has been laid out and the calculations completed. In the end, he saves his soul, but his life is lost forever. Pride has lead John to the court, but a change in thought leads him to nobles actions which result in horrible consequences.
Several characters show the theme of heroism in The Crucible by Arthur Miller. The first time readers see the theme of heroism, is when John Proctor tells the court about his affair with Abigail Williams. He admits to the affair by when he says, "I have known her, sir. I have known her." (Miller 110).
Many people would think that a play about the ultra-religious Puritans would not revolve around so many sins and sinners. During this time, if one was caught doing witchcraft, it called for immediate death. However, as clearly displayed throughout the drama, some Puritans were willing to break the rules and others had to take the fall for the rule breakers. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, many of the seven deadly sins are shown, but pride is most prevalent. John Proctor shows a lot of pride for himself in this play.
Arthur Miller implemented heroism in the play, The Crucible, using the characters; John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, and Giles Corey. The first person to display heroism is John Proctor. John Proctor did not want to have his confession nailed on the church door and explained why, “I blacken all of them, when this is nailed to the church the very day they hang for silence.” (Miller 143). This shows that John is heroic because he chose to not let the church use his confession and let innocent people die because of it.
Courage can be defined in many different ways. It can be either a mental or a moral strength when facing danger and showing no fear. These examples are supported in the play of The Crucible by Arthur Miller and the story he tells through the character John Proctor. Many characters showed many courageous acts, but one stood out. John proctor was the most courageous character because he stood up for himself and his family.
Everyone knows it's hard to tell the truth, but how many would if faced with death? Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible, starts with one bad deed that ultimately effects everyone and leads to their death. Throughout the story, John Proctor shows courage by confessing to his wife, trying to convince people the girls are liars , and decides not to sign his confession paper for dignity. Although it's often hard, Arthur Miller uses The Crucible to show it takes courage to tell the truth. Opening up to his wife,
In act I, Proctor has an affair with Abigail. Proctor insists that it didn't happen saying, “We never touched, Abby”(0000). He wants to keep the affair a secret so that his reputation as a respected well known married man stays clean. He does not care for the effects the affair had on Abigail but only for his reputation. Towards the end of the play, Proctor is accused of witchcraft and even goes to confess to save his wife.
Courage is not the absence of fear. Rather it is the judgment that something else is more important than fear. In Arthur Miller's, The Crucible, many characters have to decide whether they should confess to dealing with the devil and run away their “good name” or be hanged for something they did not do. In life, everyone is responsible for their actions which mean the characters in The Crucible should confess to their actions with the devil. Abigail Williams the vehicle that drives the play, Abigail, Reverend Hale, and Mrs. Putnam all bear the responsibility for the hysteria in the trial.
The act of bravery is the ability to stand up for what you think is right even when other people disagree or influence you to do other things. In the play, “The Crucible", by Arthur Miller, the main protagonist named John Proctor shows great bravery when he goes against the whole town and stands up for what is right. During the first act of the play, John Proctor approaches Paris to confront him about making quick assumptions of witchcraft taking over Salem. John confronts the reverend of the town to question him which displays true bravery. As the plot thickens, John forces Mary Warren to admit the corruption of the girls' claims in front of the court.
I am going to tell you who I think is the most courageous person and the most cowardly person from the play The Crucible. I think that the most courageous person in The Crucible is John Proctor, i think that the most cowardly person in The Crucible is Abigail Williams. I think that John Proctor is the most courageous person in The Crucible because all throughout the play he was standing up for people. He stood up for his wife when Reverend Hale came to their home in the middle of the night and started questioning her about being a witch and if she had a puppet, and still stood up for her when she was in court and was being charged with being a witch. Then he took Mary to the court so she could tell the court that the girls were not witches
In the Crucible, many of the characters go through changes because of the intensity of the situation. But there is only one character that I think changed the most, and that is John Proctor who is the protagonist of the novel The Crucible by Arthur Miller. I think that John Procotor changes the most in the Crucible because he is in every act and mostly in every scene, and throughtout the play I see more drama (Dynamic Character) in him than any other character in the Crucible and I will go through and tell you how John Proctor changes in the Crucible. In the beginning of the play (Acts 1 and 2), we focus on John Proctor and we know that he is a good puritan citizen, a hard-working farmer and who is a husband and father.
so she guilt-trips him by saying, “You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet!” (Miller 1139) Once this started, Abigail started making false accusations about Elizabeth to try and get her in jail or even killed so she could be with John. Once John told Abigail that he didn’t want to be with her, he told everyone of the court by saying, “Abigail is a whore!” (Miller 1206)
Hero: A person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities; however, heroism is not synonymous with perfection. Man can be a hero in spite of having some flaws. This is apparent in The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, a story about the Salem Witch Trials in which Abigail Williams accuses dozens of innocent people of witchcraft. Despite being flawed, John Proctor, Reverend Hale, and Elizabeth Proctor can demonstrate their heroism in The Crucible. John Proctor is shown to be both a hero and a flawed man in regards to his lechery.
