Courage in To Kill a Mockingbird: Critical Essay
Harper Lee's novel To Kill a Mockingbird covers many themes, throughout the novel. But, but there are major ones that stand out such as . Racism, injustice, and prejudice. are the main themes in the book. This novel is set in the early 1900s in Maycomb County, Alabama. The novel is considered a classic of American literature because it provides the reader with a powerful and thoughtful meaning. With its unforgettable characters and themes, To Kill a Mockingbird shows readers how harsh the conditions are for Tom and the rest of the characters in the book. This novel also deals with bravery. Mrs. Dubose, Tom Robinson, and Boo Radley are examples of courageous characters in the novel.
The first person who symbolizes courage is Mrs. Dubose. Mrs. Dubose is an elderly woman who is addicted to morphine. She is known for her harsh words and discrimination towards Scout and Jem, the novel's main characters. However, toward the end of her life, Mrs. Dubose shows great courage when she decides to overcome her addiction to morphine. Gen. George Patton once said, “ Courage is not the absence of fear. Despite the rumors and legends surrounding him, Boo shows great courage when he saves Jem and Scout from Bob Ewell, a man who seeks revenge on Atticus, their father. Boo risks his safety to protect Jem and Scout, showing that he is not the monster that the rumors make him out to be. Boo also shows courage by saving Scout and Jem from Mr. Ewell. Reese Witherspoon once said, “ You will always gain by giving love.” This quote resembles Boo the best because of his thoughtful messages and actions throughout the novel. In the book, the word courage can be defined as the ability to withstand hatred and judgement with a high head and a grateful heart. The three main characters that show courage are Atticus, Mrs. Dubose, and Jem Finch. All the characters show courage, just in different ways. First, Atticus shows courage by defending a black, and no one in the town agrees with his decision.
First, Harper introduces Atticus who is looked at as a hero for black people. In addition, Harper introduces Jem and Scout … One more person who showed bravery was Boo Radley, who is perceived as this hiding murderer who won’t come out of his house. In the end of the book when Scout offers to walk Boo home he is able to reflect on all the times he has been watching out for Scout and Jem. He knows in his heart that he only wanted the best for the two children and now that he has stepped out of his shadow he can really feel complete with his life choices towards the children. In relation to Boo finally emerging from his house; Boo saves the kids from Bob Ewell. When Scout and Jem were being attacked by Bob no one could’ve known what was happening or that they were in danger. Boo made it eminent to the kids that he had all along been watching out `for them when he runs out and saves their lives; returning Jem home safely as well as Scout in the process.
The book “To Kill a Mockingbird” written by Harper Lee takes place in a fictional area called Maycomb, Alabama during the 1930s. Jean Louise “Scout” Finch, the narrator, goes through changes and events with her brother, Jeremey Finch and her meant-to-be lover Dill. Later, they interpret these events through their own knowledge. Courage plays an important role throughout the book because it shows how much value a persons has and how brave they are. Courage is one of the major themes found in the novel and it is portrayed through most of the characters.
Furthermore, at the end of the book, Scout walks Boo Radley home. Earlier in the novel, Scout feared Boo because of the myths about him. After he saves her life she walks him home in the dark, all the way to his front door. However, the scene in which Scout shows the most courage is the mob scene. Atticus is sitting outside the jail protecting Tom from a gang when Scout, Jem, and Dill follow him.
