Night Response
Throughout the story Night I have learned so much about the three types of dehumanization. The three types of dehumanization are mental, physical, and emotional. They all affect humans in some sort of way and I got the experience of the reading this book by Elie Wiesel and learning about them.
The first type of dehumanization is mental. Mental dehumanization is one of the worst kinds because it messes with the human mind and the way it works. Without the human mind functioning correctly, it is hard for a person to do any task. There could also be the possibility of becoming mentally ill, which would affect the behavior, social skills, or perception of a person. Not only does mental dehumanization affect someone mentally, but

Physical dehumanization is when a person gets hurt physically. For example, a bully beating up a kid is physical dehumanization or in Eliezer’s case he was whipped by the Kapo twenty-five times and the Kapo said, “So much for your curiosity. You shall receive five times more (whips) if you dare tell anyone what you saw” (Wiesel 58). Eliezer is whipped into not telling what the Kapo is doing with a woman while the rest of the Kommando is working. This type of dehumanization can make someone not tell a secret or it can simply just be an intimidation act. Physical dehumanization is very brutal on the body and in certain cases can immobilize the body. Reading through the types of physical dehumanization within the book made me cringe, but it opened my eyes to what happens to some …show more content…
Emotional dehumanization is when a person goes through psychological trauma. Emotional dehumanization makes a person feel various ways, such as depressed or vengeful. What helped me learn what emotional dehumanization was was a section in the book when Elie Wiesel writes, “I stood petrified. What happened to me? My father had just been struck, in front of me, and I had not even blinked. I had watched and kept silent” (Wiesel 38). Eliezer wanted to make the man who hit his dad rue, but he suffered a psychological trauma where he wanted to do something about it because it was his own father getting struck by a man, but he could not due to the fact he stood there petrified. I would not want to be in the same situation Eliezer was ever because I would keep on thinking about what I could do to make the man who hit my dad suffer and every day I would feel depressed and vengeful. Furthermore, Night has taught me a variety of things, but mostly about
This was a very common way of Dehumanization in the Armenian genocide and in the war in general because the recipient was easily stripped away of their spirit and gave them P.T.S.D (Post-traumatic stress disorder), which emphasizes the perpetrator's power towards the recipient. In conclusion, the Armenians are denied of their Human rights as they experience the diverse methods of Dehumanization; stage of
To dehumanize someone is to strip an individual of their individuality including their human attributes and qualities. For as long as mental illnesses have been known, people have treated those with illnesses much differently. A particular assertion i tend to agree with is that people who have mental disorders are always dehumanized in some way. This dehumanization is shown in One flew over the Cuckoo’s nest alongside other perspectives such as a live and pop culture point of view.
Dehumanization happens when a person dispossess their human qualities. Civil War Stories by Ambrose Bierce is a collection of short stories concerning the American Civil War. The Island of Dr.Moreau by H.G. Wells is about Edward Prendick’s life changing encounter with Dr.Moreau and his island of beast people. Both Civil War Stories and The Island of Dr. Moreau have examples of dehumanization. Every person has the ability to dehumanize himself or herself.
Throughout Night, dehumanization consistently took place as the tyrant Nazis oppressed the Jewish citizens. The Nazis targeted the Jews' humanity, and slowly dissolved their feeling of being human. The feeling of dehumanization was very common between the jews. They were constantly being treated as in they were animals. The author and narrator Elie Wiesel, personally experienced being treated like an animal
Dehumanization is the process of depriving a person or group of positive human qualities, according to the dictionary. Throughout Night it shows a lot of dehumanization examples. It would take hours to name all of them. Some of the ways dehumanization was showed in Night was all of the abuse, having no identity except for a number, and the hunger they felt because they would only get one meal per day.
Out of the three ways Jews were dehumanized, mental was the worst and Eliezer was most affected by mental
Dehumanization is often used by killers in the aspect where they see their victims as subhuman parts of society (Levin & Fox, 2008). They may use this as a reason why they killed people and said they were cleaning the world from them. They are able to overcome the usual aspects of conscience that help other human beings know when to stop themselves from doing something wrong. Then compartmentalization also goes along with this. This is a process used as a defense mechanism for separating conflicting conflicts to avoid certain feelings.
Dehumanization Causing Events in Night Over the course of Eliezer’s holocaust experience in the novel Night, the Jews are gradually reduced to little more that “things” which were a nuisance to Nazis. This process was called dehumanization. Three examples of events that occurred which contributed to the dehumanization of Eliezer, his father, and his fellow Jews are: people were divided both mentally and physically, those who could not work or who showed weakness were killed, and public executions were held.
Demoralization: to cause (someone) to lose confidence or hope; dispirit. Being physically degraded is much different than mental degradation; physical abasement includes loss of muscle, fat, and other bodily necessities. Mental ignominy is getting stripped of your dignity, self-worth, and confidence. The novel Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand follows Louie Zamperini, an olympic runner and world war 2 bombardier, through his journey of agony and triumph. Prisoners of war (POW’s) were often treated similar to slaves, while being isolated from the rest of the world.
In which millions of Jews were innocently killed and persecuted because of their religion. As a student who is familiar with the years of the holocaust that will forever live in infamy, Wiesel’s memoir has undoubtedly changed my perspective. Throughout the text, I have been emotionally touched by the topics of dehumanization, the young life of Elie Wiesel, and gained a better understanding of the Holocaust. With how dehumanization was portrayed through words, pondering my mind the most.
Elie Wiesel, the author of Night, describes the horrors of focusing on your own survival. Certain acts provoke inhumane acts throughout the ordeal. A central theme in Night is, even though it’s difficult, people should value compassion over their own survival. For instance, the evil of a lack of compassion affects thousands of prisoner lives.
Suzanne Collins’ novel The Hunger Games is about stereotyping and dehumanization as ways government uses to control ordinary citizens of Panem. The main character, Katniss Everdeen, is forced to take part in the Hunger Games, which is one of the main approaches to dominate over the country. Even though Katniss is pressed to face various difficulties, the novel focuses on political and social problems that are faced in modern society. The definition of the word dehumanization by Merriam-Webster is to ‘depriving human qualities, personality, or split’.
Gasset said: “Tears high noon of the intellect”. Dehumanizing is a means by which we can sober up from the drunken stupor of Romanticism’s emotionalism (Siedell, 2009). Gasset believes that dehumanization is a process that requires an ever-present tension of subject manner. Gasset said: “The question is not to paint something
To dehumanize someone, is to derive a person of human qualities. After watching The Island, Michael Bay’s dystopian film, Lincoln Six Echo, Jordan Two Delta, and all the other clones realize they have been dehumanized and are not treated like actual humans in the world. The clones also realize they are not consider true humans and are just solely made for the purpose of elongating millionaires’ lives. Michael Bay has created The Island to give an example of the determination people have to just simply live longer, even if it means to derive people of human qualities in the process.
Dehumanization is the process of destroying someone's human qualities. Lord of The Flies is a fictional book about a group of English boys whose plane crashed on an Island during the third World War. In the book there are no adults on the Island only the boys and they end up as savages. The Picture of Dorian Gray is a fictional book about a man named Dorian Gray. In the book he is corrupted by a man named Lord Henry and his hedonistic ways.
