Beowulf Journal #1 To start off Beowulf, the book talks about this great warrior king that was talked about by the danes. This great king was named Shield Sheafson, he was the one who founded the ruling house. His son, Beow, became very famous because of his father and the power that he will hold. When Shield's time came he was put on a boat with many different weapons and other precious gear. But once this happened Beow became in charge, but his success was mostly lived through his son, Halfdane, and then his grandson, Hrothgar. Among with Hrothgar, Halfdane had three other children named Heorogar, Halga, and an unnamed daughter who was One La's queen. Hrothgar flew through the ranks and in no time became king of his hall, Heorot Hall. But …show more content…
All seemed well until, Grendel's mother attacks the hall and takes back her son’s arm. Beowulf walks back into the hall after all of this is over and hears Hrothgar lament the death of his counsellor. Hrothgar realizes that Grendel's mother was just trying to avenge her son. This attack brings out the stories of the country people and their monster stories. Off in the distance, Beowulf hears a mere and he bolsters courage from Hrothgar. He says that their lives are guided by the heroic code. Then Beowulf proclaims that he will go fight Grendel's mother and Grendel in an underwater battle and then he sets off. On his way, he is captured by Grendel’s mom and taken. But, when he tries to fight back with his sword the sword does nothing to her causing him to start fighting with his bare hands. Then he discovers a weapon that could help him defeat his enemy and it is a great sword. He defeats the enemy and then decapitates Grendel’s corpse. While trying to get back to shore the sword melts; leaving just the hilt. So he returns to Hrothgar’s hall with Grendel’s head and the hilt of his sword. Because of his great accomplishment, he displays Grendel’s head in Heorot. To conclude, Beowulf is so honored that he presents the sword-hilt to …show more content…
Then he goes to Beowulf’s side and helped fight the dragon. This causes the dragon to strike again, which leads to another setback for the heroes. On the dragon’s third onslaught, he draws blood. Wiglaf get past the flames in strikes the dragon. Leading to Beowulf to deliver the fatal wound, after all of this Beowulf senses that he is near death. Causing him to think back on his life, he bids Wiglaf to inspect the hoard and return with a portion of the treasure. Wiglaf returns to the dragon's barrow looking for treasure. He eventually returns with some. Beowulf gives thanks and orders the construction of a barrow to commemorate him. Beowulf last words before he died were, “You are the last of us, the only one left of the Waegmundings. Fate swept us away, sent my whole brave high-born clan to their final doom. Now I must follow them.” Along with Beowulf the dragon has too been destroyed. This leads the battle-dodgers to come back and Wiglaf rebukes them. A messenger tell the people that's Beowulf is dead and because of this Wiglaf predicts the enemies will now attack the Geats. He forces wars with the Franks and Frisians, but the Swedes too will strike to avenge the slaughter of Ongentheow. As Ongentheow last engagement at Ravenswood: he cornered a Geatish force. Hygelac relieved the besieged Geats and Ongentheow withdraws. The Swedish king fought for
Beowulf’s final opponent in Beowulf the Epic is a big angry dragon who had a vessel stolen from his treasure mound. Beowulf, with the help of Wiglaf, slays the dragon, but not before the dragon deals a death blow to his assassin. While bleeding profusely, Beowulf lives just long enough to digress one last time. In the movie, however, Beowulf doesn’t die, as it seems like he sails back to Geatland. There isn’t even a dragon to speak of in the movie.
Fifty years after, Beowulf was old, and was not strong as before. At the moment, the Fire-Dragon attacked his land; the fiery breath of this dragon was far too deadly and no warrior dared to risk their life. Although Beowulf was an aged man, he decided to fight against the Fire-Dragon. Finally, Beowulf devoted his life to kill the dragon. Having enough courage, Beowulf saved his people in spite of the cost of his life.
He was only trying to help out King Hrothgar and wanted to fight. Although defeating Grendel was not enough Grendel 's mother had to be defeated to for trying to kill people in the town. Beowulf took the challenge. When Beowulf goes to her he feels as if though he is going to die. She takes him to her lair Beowulf fears for his life until they get inside the lair.
(Beowulf 179). Wiglaf eventually aides Beowulf in the slaying of the dragon and even though Beowulf’s sword fails him in battle against the dragon, Beowulf protects Wiglaf and ultimately ends up
In the story Beowulf mentioned that it was his last battle, and Indeed it was. The battle was challenging because Beowulf was old and the Dragon “spouted deadly flames;” (2581) and Beowulf’s sword “let him down in the fight” (2682). Beowulf was attached by “sharp fangs” (2691) on the neck giving him “deadly poison;” (2714) he knew that it was over. “Beowulf dealt it a deadly wound” (2705) while Wiglaf killed the Dragon in honor of Beowulf and became the new king/hero.
Eventually, a third and last monster appeared. This time the monster was a furious dragon that would attack and burn down the villages of Geatland. Obviously, Beowulf was ready to take on the dragon in a fight, but unfortunately, after defeating it, his wounds were not to fix. Sadly, Beowulf had fought his last fight. Eventually, The Geat’s held a worthy funeral for Beowulf, and they even built an enormous barrow where he could rest in peace.
This gives the viewpoint that Beowulf had a right to kill the dragon, although the dragon was the first victim. Wiglaf being his murder assistant should stay named a hero. He may have made the world blind, but he saved it from destruction. Beowulf was notified that there was a dragon who was “fired” up about a certain thief. To view the facts, the dragon had a precious piece of gold stolen.
Therefore leaving him alone to fight the monster. Except there was one soldier that stuck with him, and his name was Wiglaf. He shows his loyalty and bravery to his King. They work together to kill the monster but Beowulf sustained an injury. Due to the injury, Wiglaf was named the King of Geatland for being loyal and honorable to
Beowulf is injured in the fight, and he dies along side his defeated
Wiglaf goes to protect Beowulf. “…[Wiglaf’s] mind was made up; he raised his yellow shield and drew his sword…”(104,2609-2610). However Beowulf goes to save the honor of Hrothgar’s friend. “Each of us will come to the end of this life on earth; he who can earn it should fight for the glory of his name…” (69, 1386-1388). Only Wiglaf tried to save a friend.
Another prime example of Beowulf’s tendency towards arrogance and pride is seen when Wiglaf goes to Beowulf’s aid. Wiglaf reminds Beowulf that “... do everything you said you would do when you were young and vowed you would never let your name and fame be dimmed..”(Heaney,119). This greatly demonstrates how Beowulf makes decisions that will boost his fame and he is motivated to keep fighting to preserve the legend around his name. This overconfidence and obsessions with his ego is what ultimately led to Beowulf's death and upset the stability of his
He had Wiglaf ’s help to kill the dragon in the poem. The dragon starts attacking people when someone stole a treasure from it. Beowulf brings a group of men to help him but the only person who stays is Wiglaf. Beowulf didn’t kill the dragon but he hurt the dragon pretty bad.
The reason for that being, he thought it wouldn’t be fair so he used his strength and overcome the evil creature, descendant of Cain, also known as Grendel. Beowulf shows himself aging as the battles keep coming along. The time arrives to fight the dragon and he was weak and old and somewhat knew he couldn’t do this fight alone. The dragon poisons Beowulf with a bite into the neck, and just before Beowulf is dying Wiglaf steps in scavenges through the dragon’s treasures and then returns to show Beowulf and then speaks, “Now that I’ve bought this bright treasure mound with my old lifeblood look to my kingdom the need of my Geats— I must leave you now”. (2799-2801)
Yet all that time he had still been a loyal follower and leader in the making. He stays grateful and does whatever Beowulf last dying breaths wish for. “/Then he brought their treasure to Beowulf, and found/ His famous king bloody, gasping / For breath.” Lines (810-812). This shows that Wiglaf had one wish and that is to bask in the victory he’d won with his lord.
Beowulf assumes the throne and reigns peacefully for 50 years, though there is still a trial to be completed. His final test is the hardest in terms of the monster he has to face and how high stakes the battle is. A dragon is razing all the villages and burning them down. Although Beowulf knows that this fight could be his last, he chooses to face the Dragon anyway, because if he doesn’t it could ensure the destruction of all of his kinsmen. This conforms to the Resurrection stage of the hero’s journey as the dragon is nothing like anything he faced in the
