History does repeat itself. For instance, discrimination will always occur. Just because slavery stopped, does not mean forms of it will stop also. People are still negative towards people with different skin colors than them. Skin color is really deep for some people. They treat them differently than if the person has the same skin color as them. Things that happened in the past, will still be brought up now. It is still forms of slavery now, it is just kept quiet. In the story The Fourth Of July, the family was faced with problems. They traveled to Washington D.C thinking they were free. When they got their, reality hit them in the face. Wherever they went people stared. They could not go anywhere and just fit in. When they ran into the incident at the ice cream parlor, the daughter had a new thought about her parents.The parents let the lady disrespect them. It went in one ear and out the other. They just wanted to protect their kids. They did not say anything because they thought it would have just made the situation worst. He was saying if the kid is not perfect something must be wrong with them. Is the student doing something wrong? Are they not focused enough? The answer is they are not doing anything wrong. They are just being discriminated. They can not function unless they act a certain way. Everyone has to be exactly the same. No one can have any differences. Throughout American history, minorities have been discriminated against for numerous things relating to race, gender, religion, etc. One group that was discriminated around the time of the Civil War were the Blacks. Throughout American history, they were thought of as inferior to whites and treated like animals. After the Civil War, laws started to change in favor of Blacks, things like making it illegal to enslave them, making them citizens and giving them the right to vote. These laws didn’t eliminate discrimination, though, and failed to change the opinion of what most thought of the Blacks.
We are in such a judgmental society with so many labels. It is our jobs as educators to make sure that our classrooms are set up for all of our students. Our students need to have equal access and opportunities for education. It is our job to breakdown the barriers of diversity that our students are challenged with. Race, culture, religion, economic status, and much more are going to play into what our students bring to the classroom.

Many African and Mexican Americans were discriminated when they joined the U.S. military because they were in differnet units then the whites. They were trying to help our country out by joining the war, but by helping, they get discriminated. Many jobs during the time would not allow African Americans to work there either. Lastly, many Mexican Americans were made fun of for the clothes they weared just because they were differnet and out of the ordinary.
Children need to feel as if they can relate to people in school, they need to see someone who looks like them. In a school with forty percent or more minorities I do not care how educated a person is the students and the parents need to feel they are understood and have someone with whom they can relate. Several years ago, my class was having a discussion, a student did not want to share out with the class but she did write her comment on paper.
In 1930 prejudices against African American people were extremely harsh. African Americans could not walk the streets without getting racial slurs yelled at them. Frederick Douglass was an escaped slave who joined the Abolitionist cause in the North, writing books and speeches with a first-hand account of the horrors of slavery. In 1852, as the anti-slavery movement in the North was approaching a new peak and as secessionist sentiments were emerging in the South, he was invited to give a speech at a Fourth of July celebration in Rochester (Douglass). Douglass used the opportunity to expose the hypocrisy of this democracy through his speech, “July 4, 1852.” In the speech, he pointed the flawed logic behind celebrating freedom while keeping millions of people as property, denying them rights.
It is my view that it is possible to repeat the past. All of history is a huge cycle of wars, rises and falls of civilizations, and innovation after innovation. Unfortunately, we continue and continue to repeat the past because we have a hard time breaking the chain. You have to learn from the past to prevent it from repeating. We should not repeat the past.
Mark Twain once said, “History does not repeat itself but it does rhyme”. When looking at the past one may see exactly what Mark Twain is speaking of. One major “rhyme” in history is the Trail of Tears in 1830-1836 and the Bataan Death March in 1942. These two events have major similarities that occurred between them and yet multiple differences. When comparing the two one has to look at the fact that individuals were upset about what happened to the United States soldiers during the Bataan Death March even though years prior the United States put the Native Americans in an identical situation during the Trail of Tears of 1838.
An abolitionist, a former slave, and Republican Statesman Frederick Douglass had given a moving speech “What to the Slave is The Fourth Of July” to an audience of white New York Abolitionists in the year 1852. In addition, Douglass’s purpose of the speech is to emphasize the meaning of the Fourth of July to slaves and how the white men have a sense of freedom while the slave has to deal with the reality of what the day means to them. In the speech, Douglass had created a harsh tone to discuss the importance of anti-slavery. Douglass begins his speech by explaining the idea of what a slave may think of the Fourth of July because he had been a slave and by expressing the way he feels about the holiday that represents freedom for the people in the United States. He calls upon the audience by asking them a question using an interrogative sentence “[...] allow me to ask, why am I called upon to speak here today?”
“Fourth of July” Essay “Treat others how you want to be treated” (Golden Rule). “The Fourth of July”, by Audre Lorde, is about when a young girl (Lorde) experiences discrimination on her family’s vacation to Washington DC. Lorde encounters the obstacle of prejudice throughout the essay making her feel ashamed of who she was which shows that prejudice has a negative effect on everyone. To support this, the way people treated Lorde’s family made Lorde feel ashamed. To demonstrate, she explains, “The nuns had given her back her deposit in private, explaining to her class, all of whom were white, except Phyllis, would be staying in a hotel where Phyllis ‘would not be happy’, meaning, Daddy explained to her, also in private, that they did not rent rooms to Negroes” (240).
