In an argument, our goal is to advance our views so that others will agree with us or so that we can bring change to a current view on an issue we feel strongly about. In order to do this, we rely on three rhetorical devices when writing: Pathos, Ethos, and Logos. Pathos is using emotional appeal to persuade the audience. An example of this is in ASPCA commercials; they persuade you to give money to the organization when they show sad dogs and cats. Ethos is an ethical appeal to the character of the speaker. A writer must be mindful of Ethos when writing or the audience may perceive them as cold or uncaring. I’m currently working on an essay and have included two of the three rhetorical appeals Logos and Ethos. The main appeal is Logos, because There is a lot of information and facts. Ethos also, because there is authority that will help back up the claims. My audience is not directed to any individual group it is intended for everyone.
Logos, Pathos, and Ethos are the three appeals used in argumentation. Roth ineffectively uses the rhetorical triangle by the employment of pathos, ethos, and logos by not regarding the persons’ situations or feelings, projecting hypocrisy onto the text, and by using unclear evidence and logic. ‘Reasons are BS’(Roth 38). This is a saying that claims every reason, even if it is a good reason, is BS. This includes the good reasons, like, “My grandma died” and “I’m late to class because my bike got a flat”.
Rhetorical Appeals The three elements of rhetorical appeals were analyzed in Po Bronson’s article “Learning to Lie,” published February 10, 2008. In the article, Po Bronson uses rhetorical devices to persuade the reader that a reasonable one-third of teens lie to their parents. Bronson discusses about young kids learning to lie and what their causes may be. To better convey his points to the reader, Bronson uses the rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos is trying to convincing the audience and a persuader by trying to achieve credibility.
Ethos has to do with credibility and establishing a good relationship with the audience. This can also be expressed through your tone and confidence of the matter. If someone is more confident through his or her tone, it'll attract the reader to continue reading without questioning the validity of the argument. In my personal statement, I was telling a story that I have told others many times before to a variety of people. My tone remains subtle and informal so that the audience feels like we are having a conversation.
the least ineffective rhetorical appeal is "logos"although there may be some logic in saying hi to a person when you see them most people do not say hello back to you. When i was younger i said hello to everyone i meet but there were always people that did not respond back. The reason why they did not respond back is because they didn't care or were not feeling to well to say hi. Most people say hi to send back the generosity of someone greeting them, others don't and just leave and smash your generosity on the ground. pathos is the main rhetorical appeal therefor other people use "hello" in everyday conversations.

Johnson was current president and was trying to encourage congress to pass a bill called The Voting Rights Act. To influence the vote he gave the speech “We Shall Overcome.” In “We Shall Overcome” President Lyndon Johnson used ethos, pathos, logos, and other rhetorical devices such as allusions, repetition and appeals to authority to persuade congress to pass the act.
For example, Mr.Gilmer uses Pathos when making Mayella explain what happened on the supposed day Tom abused and took advantage of her, the reasoning is that in the book it says “Mayella stared at him and burst into tears. She cover her mouth with her hands and sobbed. ”lee241 When this scene happened Mr.Gilmer was questioning Mayella. This showed a negative holistically in the argument; Pathos was strengthened because of the reason it appealed the audience emotion making them feel bad for her, this helped the argument because the audience felt emotion when Mayella was crying this might cause an unbiased audience to feel and think that Tom could possibly be guilty. Also, Mr.Gilmer used Ethos appealing to the audiences good morals for this reason
There are many writers that affect our emotions or that make us think that his or her statements are reasonable, whether they are authors of books, or script writers for a movie or a play. In Morgan Spurlock’s film, Supersize Me, he uses three common rhetorical strategies: ethos, pathos, and logos. Socrates used logos in a way that helped him exhibit an effective speech to prove which type of knowledge is worth knowing. In spite of this claim, Socrates was truly only showing the court that he really did not know much more than his name.
