What is a false appearance? False appearances happen all the time. They can be defined as a facade, which is a false, superficial, or artificial appearance or effect. People try to hide their bad deeds by using a false appearance, attempting to make themselves look better than what said bad deeds make them appear to be. Macbeth is said to be a timeless play and in order to prove such a statement there will be examples used from the play and from our everyday life.

First, we see Lady Macbeth acting like a sweet, caring, and good hostess toward King Duncan as he comes to Macbeth’s castle. “All our service, in every point twice done and then done double, were poor and single business to contend against those honors deep and broad wherewith your majesty loads our house. For those of old, and the late dignities heaped up to them, we rest your hermits” (Shakespeare 1.6. 14-20). However, she and Macbeth actually intend to kill Duncan later that night while he is sleeping. Lady Macbeth’s aura of kindness makes King Duncan feel safe and secure in their home.
