Challenges of Fear Fear is a challenge that everyone has to deal with at least once in their lifetime. Everyone has a fear of something, whether it's the fear of spiders, the fear of darkness, or even the fear of school. Fear is also shown in Kindred, which is a book about Dana; a young, black woman, who time-travels back to the 1800s. This is a period where people of color were not treated well, and Dana had to suffer through it. It is also shown in The Crucible through Abigail's perspective as she keeps lying to keep herself from being killed. The question is how does a person respond when challenged by fear? The answer is simple: When challenged by fear, one tends to respond in a way that will protect one’s self from harm.
Firstly, Dana, the main character of the book Kindred, is challenged by fear many times throughout the story. One example of this is when Dana is whipped by Weylin for stealing books from him. In Kindred, Octavia Butler tells us that Dana says, “I kept trying to crawl away from the blows, but I didn't have the strength or the coordination to get far,” (107). This connects to fear because Dana was brutally abused to the point where she was frightened and didn’t have to strength to get up. Another example is when Rufus tries to rape Dana, and she stabs him to

An example of this is when Arthur Miller tells us that Abigail says, “My name is good in the village! I will not have it said my name is soiled! Good Proctor is a gossiping liar!” (570). This shows that Abigail lied about Elizabeth Proctor in order to save her own reputation around the village. Another example is when Abigail blames Tituba for forcing her to drink blood. Referring to Tituba, Abigail tells Reverand Hale, “She makes me drink blood!” (592). This also shows that Abigail is lying and blaming another person to protect herself from harm and not be
Being afraid of (someone or something) as likely to be dangerous, painful, or threatening is called fear. In the short story The Most Dangerous Man by Richard Connell is a short story about fear and battling against two men to see who wins the hunting game. Rainsford has to fight to the end of the game to win if he does not then he will lose. To beat General Zaroff Rainsford needs to step up his game and be smart and not be lazy. As Rainsford is getting close to the game he need to be smart because General Zaroff will catch up and he could defeat Rainsford.
First, Abigail lies to conceal her affair with John Proctor and to prevent being charged with witchcraft. "You did, you did! You drank a charm to kill John Proctor’s wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!" (Miller, 19).In Salem
She is a cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her! Let her turn you like a-”(151) which is a great example on how Abigail was vindictive and would stretch the truth and everyone would believe everything she says; everyone in that time was very gullible even though they knew deep down that Elizabeth Proctor was innocent. Abigail planned on ruining Elizabeth’s
Courage, Weakness, Truth In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible it shows examples of courage, weakness, and truth. Along with those three topics there are many pieces of evidence to back these up. Courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. Weakness is a person or thing one is unable to resist or likes excessively.
For instance, the fear of public speaking, flying, or the fear of trying something new can seem more terrifying than they really are. Once people face those challenges, they often realize that they weren't as difficult or as bad as they had originally thought. However, it is that initial fear that causes people to overreact. People resist change or new ideas because they are uncertain about what the future holds. In a Biblical setting, this rule can be seen in the story of Elijah in 1 Kings.
For instance, when Betty had awakened, Abigail explained to her that she has told her uncle Parris everything that had happened the night in the woods. On the other hand, Betty turns around and exclaims, did you tell him that, “you drank blood,” because the night they were caught in the woods Tituba had told Abigail that if she drinks chicken blood it will kill Goody Proctor (Miller, 1136). Abigail drank the blood because she was told that it would kill Goody Proctor and wanting someone to die is a wrong thing to do. In addition, another example is when Abigail was brought into the courtroom and interrogated about calling the devil the night when she and the other girls were in the woods. Abigail answered to the question, with “Tituba, Tituba…” blaming Tituba for being the one that called the devil, but really she was telling Tituba and wanted her to (Miller,1152).When John Proctor saw Abigail for the first time, since after their affair she had gone up to him and was convincing him that he loved her and he still loves her, which is not true anymore, but she cannot accept it.
Fear as a Powerful Motivator in The Handmaid's Tale Fear is a powerful emotion that everyone experiences in life and can be used in ways that can help your situation but can also be abused. In The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, fear is shown as a powerful motivator for the handmaids. Fear is used as a means of control, as a incentive for conformity, and an motive for resistance.
Yes, in fact fear does affect them in making choices. Mayella Ewell shows fear multiple times while up on trial. The first time Mayella shows fear is when Atticus asks if she loves her father. “He does tollable, ‘cept when-” she stops in the middle of her sentence to look over at her father, who is sitting on a chair staring at her. Fear then takes over and makes her change her statement.
Everyone has fear but people can use fear as a good thing. Fear can even save
Fear is used a lot in The Crucible, like for example when goody Proctor has to say why she fired Abigail and she said that “Abigail was no use to me” and that she thought that her husband was going to leave her Fear is different for different people, what do the individual characters in the play fear, and how does that drive their action? Well I think that every character in the movie experience fear at least ones in book,
Like Abigail utterly told liars about how Elizabeth spirit had stabbed her at the dinner table but actually Abigail framed Goody Proctor with the doll Mary Warren had made as evidence to stable herself. Also Abigail accused Mary Warren for working with the devil in the setting of act three in the courtroom. The girls in courtroom acted as if Mary spirit was attacking them ,to scare her back to their side. Giles Corey also accused Thomas Putnam for being gluttonous for more land and therefore accusing his neighbors for it.
These people who let fear get to them often do not want someone to find out what they did, what they caused, and who they hurt. People will go to great lengths to cover up something they did by blaming another person for all of it. An example of fear would be the trial in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird. The example is when Mayella Ewell sent Tom Robinson to court for supposedly raping her.
Also, in attempt to tell the truth about Abigail, John Proctor admits to cheating on his wife with Abigail, but Elizabeth lets her fear assist her in lying. John Proctor tells everyone in the court, previous to Elizabeth arriving, “she [has] never lied” (III.891.). With everyone now knowing that she does not lie, it makes her trustworthy and believable. Deputy Danforth then brings Elizabeth in to confirm what
Fear can be healthy, but also deadly to the human race. Fear makes people not do things that can harm them, which makes them stay alive longer. Not only does it keep people alive, it can also kill as well. Fearing something and being frightened of an object or thing can turn into a panic situation, which can lead to an untimely death. In the book Fear by Michael Grant the characters face that same reality.
An example of this is with Othello, as he speaks with Iago stating, “I think my wife be honest, and think she is not; I think thou art just, and thou art not” (Othello III,iii, 381-382). This quote here is spoken just after Iago has told Othello that his beloved wife, Desdemona is cheating on him. Othello is slowly starting to give into fear that he is losing her, not wanting to believe she is cheating but at the same time he does not know if he can be so sure. Just like he does not know if he can trust Iago’s words, if he is honest or lying to him. However, this not the only example of fear in a character’s heart in the book or play.
