Generally, when a government gains some control, they take advantage of the control given and go too far. When control is taken too far it can influence the citizens to want to rebel against the government to often gain their own freedom. In the book, Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, the government takes so much control to prevent conflicts and to maintain social order, but it causes some citizens to rebel and desire individual freedom. The government in the book shows control through the separation of uglies and pretties and when one can turn pretty. In Uglies, control from the government is shown through plastic surgery at 16 and an interface ring, but a group of Uglies is rebelling for their own individual freedom. The government has control over the citizens by having the ability to determine when the citizens can finally turn pretty. Usually, the general rule is that when an ugly turns 16 they then have plastic surgery and are considered pretty, but the government can extend the wait if they find reasons to withhold being pretty. Once they turn pretty they cross the river and switch towns. Shay and Tally, two new friends, are discussing when they turn pretty, “‘So how long have you got?’ Shay answered instantly. ‘Two months and twenty-six days.’ … ‘Yeah, way. It’s perfect. We’ll both turn pretty together!’” (pg 36). From the previous quote, a reader would gather the characters' excitement when they find out they turn pretty on the same day. The government shows its control by determining when a citizen can be considered pretty but it is actually just another way for the government to observe them on a bigger aspect. Another way the government showed the readers their control was through the interface ring. The interface ring was another way to determine where citizens were at all times and what they were doing. Tally comes to a realization and rebels against the controlling society that she lives within. She chooses to rebel for her and many others' freedom. Overall, the government controlled the citizens in almost every aspect including the citizens' lives, appearances, behaviors, etc., and that would have continued if the Smokes and Tally would not notice that truth and rebelled for the better, but the question is were the smokes
Have you ever wanted to be pretty? In the book I read this summer, Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, that's all Tally Youngblood dreamed of as she would look out to new pretty town, but after her best friend Peris had turned pretty Tally soon grew alone, But Tally meets a young girl by the name of Shay who speaks of a place called the ‘Smoke’ where they follow their own rules and of a boy named daved. Tally learns to love herself being the way she is in the ‘Smoke’ and learns of other and there lives but it doesn't last long seeing as this was a very special circumstance soon tally learns the truth of her so called paradise.
And there were no pretty operations. These operations have been around for a long time, and are a must when we turn 16. But did anyone question where these operations came from? What is the secret behind these operations. On Saturday, runaway Tally Youngblood, and her friends Shay and David, have discovered the truth about the pretty operations.
Shay is completely against the societies system of 'Ugly' to 'Pretty' as she believes that turning 'Pretty' is an unrealistic Barbie doll fantasy. She says "It's about becoming what I want to become. Not what some surgical committee thinks I should." Another reason why she opposes the 'Pretty' surgery is because she believes that it changes who you are. A significant lesson you can learn from Shay is that you don't need to follow in line of society and do what they want; individuality is important and being different isn't something you should be ashamed of.

This creates the idea that the only way to fit in, is to be good looking. The same is in the book, Uglies, where everyone is expected to get a surgery when they turn 16 to turn ‘pretty’ or perfect. Tally is told that she can’t turn pretty unless she betrays her best friend, Shay, and finds a hidden city full of uglies called the ‘smoke’.
This demonstrates how the government relies on their power to enforce peace and keep an oppressive and totalitarian status quo, moreover, it shows how that power affects the people of the novel. the authors explain in this section that if people are pushed into a government that does not allow them to uphold their rights, then they are in their own rights to overthrow the current rulers in the pursuit of a better, and more just mode of governing. these beliefs are outlined in the next paragraph, where parallel structures are used in order to create a more impactful and riveting read. “. . . A government is set into place by the people to govern society. Complete rule over others is not accomplished through the appearance of order. The more the government tries to unfairly govern its people with the use of violence and force, the more rebellion by the people will occur. In the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, the government tried to rule over its people by the use of censorship and by the complete eradication of knowledge along with individuality. In the autobiography I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai, the Taliban used violence and fear to govern the people of Pakistan.
The Primary objective of all leaders should be to control citizens. A society that allows authority to be challenged will never succeed. This source depicts an authoritarian or totalitarian view of what a governing body should look like. The author suggests that the primary objective of government should be the “control of the citizens”, and therefore that the individuals should entirely obey said government.
The source is stating that a country is at it’s best when the individual is allowed to express themselves in a way that is free from government control. In doing this it allows for a society that is reflective of the individual rather than the government. When society is based on the individual, government interference will be lessened because the need for it will no longer be prevalent to society. This source is for classical liberalism and reflects the ideologies of philosopher Adam Smith who was strictly for individual benefit and limited government control. Based on historical events it is wrong to have lessened government control because it can lead to civil unrest and lack of authority.
Her mother was once beautiful, but her looks faded with age, which is a reason why she is always after Connie. In the story, her mother, “who noticed everything and knew everything and who hadn’t much reason any longer to look at her own face scolded Connie about it”(25). She would say to Connie, “Stop gawking at yourself. Who are you? You think you’re so pretty?”

Although the central message of conformity is still upheld, it is opposite of “Eye of the Beholder” in that this society has a pre-determined set of beautiful patterns that their citizens choose from instead of being forced into one disfigured norm. Meanwhile, Marilyn states “when everyone is beautiful, no one will be because without ugliness there can be no beauty.” (Number 12 Looks Like You) emphasizing her belief that what makes something beautiful is its ability to stand out amongst others like it, and not something that can be standardized. However, it is later discovered by Marilyn that the government alters personality traits as well, to create a more cooperative and happy
One form of control is keeping people in the poor and working classes. The book reinforces how all the citizens are in the same social class, “ ‘I wanted to ask you whether you’d got any razor blades,’ he said... Everyone kept asking you for razor blades” (Orwell 63). This quote shows how the working class has equal opportunity and all has the same products. The upper class or the government has more opportunity to get the products since they are more available to them than to the working class.
