Being greedy can lead us into a lot of trouble. We are often tempted to want the best shoes or the newest gadgets; in turn, this causes us to not make the best decisions. We will beg our parents to buy us something, or even worse, steal. Some of us may even get angry or sad if we don’t get what we want. From seeing this, we can tell that greed is not a very great thing to possess. In fact, the book, Invisible Lines by Mary Amato, talks about a young boy named Trevor who appears as a very greedy person. He always seems to want what we cannot get. Although it is a terrible thing to possess, his greed eventually helps him to notice his surroundings and develop other great traits. Ever since he was a kid, Trevor’s family had lived in very humble means. Because of this, Trevor had to think of unconventional ways to entertain himself and his siblings. Although he did not have many supplies, he always managed to find a way to create a toy from scraps around the house or from leftover cardboard boxes. Due to several years of having to think and create consistently, Trevor excelled in problem solving and always found a way to get out of sticky situations. One example of this is when he needed to buy a notebook for his Science class. Since Trevor’s mom was tight on money at the moment, he had to think on his feet. In doing so, Trevor made a makeshift notebook for himself from unused paper from his local print shop and two pieces of cardboard. This shows how inventive and innovative Trevor is. On the other hand, I would not consider myself as inventive as Trevor. Unlike Trevor, I was fortunate enough to get by financially; however, my family was by no means rich. Due to this, I was not forced to constantly try to come up with ways to entertain myself as a child. Consumed by greed, author Gary Soto reiterates his first sin with imagery and a plethora of symbols as he is overpowered by greed and must accept God back into his life. To clarify, the sin itself was fueled by greed, which the then six years old Gary Soto was not able to resist. At the time, the author stole an apple pie from a bald grocer “whose forehead shone with a window of light.” (Line 18) It is as if Gary Soto is turning away from the house of God which is adorned with windows to let in His light. The author grins at the grocer and exits, at that moment he has turned his back on the house of God, giving in to greed’s temptation by stealing an apple pie; much like Eve stole the apple from the Garden of Eden.
Throughout Unit 1, the stories have had a similar story line, which greed and power trumps doing what is right. Christopher Columbus found new land and stripped from those who rightfully owned it, slave traders ripped Equiano from his home to make money off of him, and Salem citizens accused honorable people of witchcraft for personal gain. The stories of Columbus, Equiano, and John Proctor all relate back to show that being an American can be described by the urge for power and the temptation of greed. When Columbus took off to find a quicker route to Asia, he had no idea what he would eventually find.
Greed is an excessive or rapacious desire, especially for wealth or possessions (dictionary.com). The word “greedy” perfectly describes Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge in the movie and play of A Christmas Carol, written by Charles Dickens. Greed can be caused by a countless amount of things. It can be called almost a disease. It is terrible thing that can corrupt even the best of people.

In conclusion, the monkey's paw by WW Jacobs proves that greedy can take over your mind. By the end of the night the Whites accepted their fate and learned their actions were wrong. As soon as the Whites knew they had the possibility to be greedy they took their chances and they wished for money and once her son was taken from them, they realized what they did and they couldn't fix it. Walter Lee is a character from the play A Raisin in the Sun in which a black family tries to get out of poverty and go against stereotypes by trying to start over with their Grandpa’s life insurance money. A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry explores the concept that greed leads to being blinded by money and forgetting about one’s loved ones as shown by the climax of the play, the character of Walter Lee, and the effect that his actions have on the rest of his family. The Character of Walter Lee shows that greed blinding a person can cause him to forget about the ones he loves.
Greed can be a good thing if it is used for the right reasons. For example, greed can be the key that leads to success. If a person wants to achieve recognition, they’ll go extreme measures to make it happen such as inventing something, excelling in their studies, or even being the best. However, in most cases, greed can lead to disaster. Having the desire to obtain something a person already possesses is selfish.

Greed is existent within all individuals despite how generous and altruistic one can be.
