She was a savage, angry teenager who everyone thought was an angel. According to Shmoop, “Abigail flirts with John Proctor. She tries to get him to admit that he still wants her and expresses anger toward his wife for “blackening” her name in the village.” As we can see, Abigail Williams wasn't the kindest person out there.
In Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible, the characters' motivations seem to be corrupt. Taking a persons life away or saving it, is what motivation can do. The people of Salem tend to use it for there own personal gain instead of helping others. This can be traced back to Thomas Putnam's greed, Mary Warren's fear and Abigail William's lust to falsely accuse there neighbors of witchcraft.
As the book nears the end, John Proctor hesitates numerous times to expose what has happened between he and Abigail Williams because he is afraid of his name being ruined. Abigail Williams was one of the Reverends, that the town has, nieces. She served as the Proctors household servant. Abigail is a young and witty girl who could talk just about anyone into doing whatever she wanted them to do. She uses this ability throughout the whole drama.
“You should surely know that Cain was an upright man, and yet he did kill Abel. ”(Miller, Pg. 87) Cain killed Abel because of ambition. He wanted his sacrifice to God to be better than Abel’s, and when it wasn’t, this upright man killed his brother. This same force can be seen throughout history, with some major consequences.
Abigail Williams, It is all her fault with her having the affair with John Proctor, It is not all John's fault that the afrie happen it's Abigail's fault that it happen. Abby is the reason that John slept with her, she seduced him into cheating on his wife with her. If Abby did not work for John and goodly Proctor want happen wouldn't of happen to the town and everything would be fine. Her Affair with John, and her love for John is a big reason why I blame her for everything that happens to the town of Salem. ”Why the Williams girl charge her”(Millar 171).
She had an affair with John and believes that he loves her. Abby wants to get rid of Elizabeth Proctor, so she can become John’s wife. “It’s a bitter woman, a lying, cold, sniveling woman, and I will not work for such a woman.” Abigail said. Abigail used to be a worker in the Proctor house, but she got let go because of the affair with John.
“Greed makes men blind and foolish, and makes him an easy prey”- Unknown. Greed, is one word that comes to mind when I think of Thomas Putnam. He is a flank character who stays a bad guy throughout the play which adds to how he portrays the theme. In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, Thomas Putnam helps to show the theme of how far someone will go to make sure they get what they want. He does this in many different ways and he does it very well.
Greed. Self-centeredness. Stinginess. Self-indulgence. Self-worship.
In The Crucible, greed is the overall theme. For instance Reverend Parris shows the first act of greed. As Reverend Parris argues with his niece Abigail he proclaims, “But if you trafficked with spirits in the forest I must know it now, for surely my enemies will, and they will ruin me with it” (Miller 10). In the scene Reverend Parris is fearful about his enemies discovering there are practices of witchery in his household and therefore his enemies will use
Abigail 's heartless attitude is shown in act two when she frames and accuses Elizabeth Proctor for witchcraft. She desired and longed for this revenge on poor Proctors innocent wife, aiming for her through out the play. Later on in Act Three she seems to lose her last attachment of society by destroying John Proctor, who she claims to love with all her heart. When John attempts and threatens to expose Abigail’s wrong doings, she skillfully manages to turn the whole problem around on him, sending him off
In Arthur Miller's “The Crucible” (1953), it is shown that people seem to forget basic morals when dealing with mass hysteria. Puritans in the play do not want the devil or any other demonic figures such as witches in their community, they will go to great lengths, as far as turning their back on their own people to get rid of these demonic figures as shown in “The Crucible”. This idea of witches in the community caused chaos in the village which led to the deaths of 20 people in the village. Do people in the play not care about the consequences other people face because of their actions? In the play, loyalty falls far below self selfishness in the face of mass hysteria.
Abigail is willing to accuse any one in her path of witchcraft even if it means taking the lives of those close to her. Abigail Williams’ emotional desire guides her actions even if it conflicts with morality. Abigail williams is driven to do unthinkable things because of her love for John Proctor. Abigail works in the Proctor’s home and while doing so she finds herself attracted to John. Abigail’s obsession with Proctor leads them to have an affair, which they try to keep
John Proctor also claims in court that “she only pretended to faint” to try to convince that she is being attacked by witches and devils. Abigail Williams evil actions caused lots of people to suffer. Abigail Williams, a static character does not change by the end of the play because she continues to protect her reputation instead of telling the truth. Throughout the play Abigail choose to continue to lie about the witchcraft instead of telling the truth. She is a static charatcer because she had many chances to stop the trails, and tell the truth.
For example, Abigail Williams had an affair with John Proctor who was married to Elizabeth Proctor at the time and got discovered. However, Abigail Williams still “loved” John Proctor and was rejected. Later, she accuses Elizabeth Proctor for witchcraft, an action she uses as her revenge. These acts of cruelty ultimately affect all the victims and their families in this play as their consequence is to be hung.
