Characters in the Crucible were really scared about people among them being witches, but they were most scared of being blamed as a witch themselves. The story shows how the girls who were seen dancing in the forest were then blamed for being witches and from there the blame spread everywhere. This confession allows their loved ones to realize the sincerity in the individual as they wish to truly penitent themselves for their improper actions. In act four of The Crucible, John Proctor falsely confesses to witchcraft as he believes it is more preferable to die rather than continue to engage in dirty lies. When Judge Danforth commands John to sign the confession as proof that he has truly engaged in witchcraft, John initially profusely refuses to succumb to Danforth’s demands. However, he later decides to sign his name but immediately tears up the confession after signing it. This demonstrates his wish to retain his good name and dignity after confessing a false statement.

In The Crucible, there are many examples of judgment, almost the whole town is judgemental. This is why some people are turning away from others. It's clear to see in the play, one lie turns into another which turns into another, and it just keeps growing until the whole town is in this bundle of lies, and accusations. Society today is really judgemental. If you don’t wear the right clothes or have the right car then you will get judged. Back in the late sixteen hundreds the people during that time are very strict on religion. During the time a colony in the Americas called the puritans believed in witchcraft. People that are accused are guilty till proven innocent. In the Crucible it portrays injustice by how Danforth is not following court that is ruled by religion, Abigail intimidating the court, and the accused not having proper court rights. One example these actions being brought to life is on of page 109 when John Proctor tells Elizabeth “ My honesty is broke, Elizabeth; I am no good man”. This is quote has so much meaning because previous to this quote John had admitted to the court that he had had an affair with Abigail. By him admitting this he is putting himself in the state to be arrested for adultery, which would later lead to his death. Abigail had accused John's wife Elizabeth of being a witch in hopes that she would be hanged.
What if there was a society where God was loved the same amount as His wrath is feared? Well, in the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the Puritans were a society who loved and feared God equally. They loved and feared Him to a point where they blamed others for their sins. A group of young girls were caught doing witchcraft in the forbidden woods. The girls put the blame on others so they would not be the ones in trouble and the accused Puritans were all innocent of doing witchcraft.
John could have used this opportunity to get revenge on Abigail. Instead he makes the honorable decision to personally redeem himself from his previous mistakes. Hypocrisy is the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform; pretense. In the book the Crucible there are many hypocrites some dishonest some just following any one to be guilty, but one of the many character is Judge Danforth he mocks Marry when he ask "How were you instructed in your life? Do you not know that God damns all liars?"(3-84), since Danforth is in power for being the judge he thinks that everyone else is ignorant and not being equal as him.
Since the beginning of time people have gone through trials in court to either be proven innocent or guilty. In the Crucible by Arthur Miller a massive number of people were being convicted in Salem, Massachusetts because of the witch trials. The law of the land states that everyone is above suspicion until they are demonstrated to be guilty by legitimate evidence; in the play the Crucible if a person was accused of an unlawful act they were summons for being a witch and working for the devil without proper confirmation. Citizens in Salem were imposed to establish their innocent or be put to death, which caused conflicting issues in the village.
The historical fiction play The Crucible written in 1953 by Arthur Miller takes place in the puritan town of Salem during the time 1692 which shows many examples of the theme of betrayal. In reading this play you view how everybody during the witch trials turned on each other and wanted to keep themselves safe. Nobody stayed as a community or a whole. Everybody was betraying one another. Betraying somebody will help yourself and hurt the person you are betraying, but you will never know when somebody is going to betray you.
Young ones are seen more as pure and innocent often leading adults to believe them. In The Crucible, the children accused many civilians of being witches. The weighty magistrates and other adults accounted the children’s words and took it to court. Accused and some of who were not accused rational adults tried to make sense of the situation were ignored. The children were trusted due to religion and some benefitting from their accusation.
