811 Words4 Pages

In The Outsiders many characters show great heroism throughout the whole novel. Heroism is great bravery. In S.E. Hinton’s realistic fiction novel The Outsiders many people are caught up in the rivalry between the rich Socs and the poor Greasers. The two groups get in many fights. One night a couple of Socs attack the narrator Ponyboy and his best friend Johnny. This fight goes way too far now the two boys are in a great deal of trouble. In The Outsiders an easy hero to spot in my opinion is Darry. He does so much for Sodapop and Ponyboy out of his love and care for his two younger brothers. Dallas is a character who is not an easy hero to spot. He has do so much wrong is his life it’s almost hard to see the good he has done. Including saving …show more content…

Darry is the oldest Curtis brother he is undoubtedly the strongest Greaser and is very smart. He is a hero because every morning he wakes up to possibly find more people in his house other than Sodapop and Ponyboy. Darry has given up a collage education, friends, and money just so him and his brothers could stay together. On page 142 the gang is about to get into a big rumble against the Socs. Ponyboy starts thinking to himself about Darry and his situation in life. “It wasn’t only jealousy- Darry had a right to be jealous, he was ashamed to be seen with the Brumly boys, Shepard’s gang and maybe even us… I thought they used to be friends, and now they hated each other.” The day before Randy, Ponyboy and everyone who had jumped Ponyboy and Johnny were due in court Randy went to the Curtis house to talk to Ponyboy. “‘I live her with just Darry and Soda, my brothers.’” This is on page 164. Darry really didn’t have to take in Soda and Pony, he did this because he loves and cares for his brothers. Another reason is on page 175. “… You don’t realize all Darry’s giving up just trying to give you a chance he missed out on. He could have stuck you in a boy’s home and worked his way through college.’” Darry has given up his college education and is now giving that chance to Ponyboy. Now thanks to Darry, Pony, Soda and himself can stay together since they are all that they have left family …show more content…

Yet he is still a very loving and caring person once you get to know him like Johnny did. Dallas saved Pony and Johnny in Windrixville and also went to jail for Two-Bit’s actions. On page 93, Ponyboy’s jacket was caught on fire so Dallas went and saved him from getting very bad burns. “Dally swore at me and clubbed me across the back as hard as he could, and I went into a peaceful darkness.” Then on page 95 Ponyboy, Dallas and Johnny are all being token to the hospital. Jerry, a school teacher is explaining what happened to Pony and where Johnny and Dallas. “‘We think the towheaded kid is going to be alright. He burned one arm pretty badly, though, trying to drag the other kid out the window.’” Dallas saved Johnny from dying in the fire that day. Lastly on page 176 Johnny is explaining why he think that Dallas is a southern gentlemen. “‘But one night I saw Dally getin’ picked up by the fuzz, and he kepy real calm and cool the whole time. They was getin’ him for breakin’ out the windows in the school building, and it was Two-Bit who did that.” This shows that Dallas cares for Two-Bit’s reputation more than his own. Thanks to Dallas everybody got to see Johnny alive, Ponyboy was still alive and was not severely burned. Two-Bit also didn’t go to jail, instead Dallas did. Dallas shows heroism even if he doesn’t always show
