Power can be explored in various ways by different authors, John Steinbecks, "Of Mice And Men" and Armin Greders, "The Island" are two works of literature that both express ways of power throughout the stories. Through the portrayal of Characters and Relationships. In addition to this, the use of power in Authority, Vulnerability and Fear are present in both texts. Despite the difference in time periods and setting, both authors are able to showcase these themes of power and have relate to ubiquitous times. One of the most common themes seen in both texts, is through the use of Authority. The Characters in the ranch such as Curley can be seen abusing his authority to treat others rudely and often picks fights. An example of this can be,"I'll kill the son-of-a-bitch myself, I'll shoot him myself". This quote highlights Curleys use of abusive authority. This technique used is emotive language when Curley expresses his anger on Lennie. This example of authority can be seen in the island too. The reoccurring use of fear portrayed in "Of Mice and Men". can include on how the characters in the story face the fear of the unknown which can also be seen in the island when the people are unsure of what the strange man could do next. George and Lennie however fear loosing their job and being forced to move onto another ranch for an unknown future. An additional quote to support this can be,"You got me to look after you and I got you to look after me." In this quote it expresses Lennies fear of the unknown featuring the use of repetition of the phrase,"look after". This emphasises the importance of their relationship throughout the book.
