Impulsivity poses a threat to the majority of teens in modern day society. Teens are plagued by recklessness and stubbornness which can get them into trouble or even get them involved in addictive and dangerous behavior. In the tragedy Romeo and Juliet written by Shakespeare, a popular text among ninth grade classrooms, two teens heedlessly pursue their “love at first sight” relationship despite their families’ long history of rivalry resulting in their ultimate demise. Throughout the play, the two lovers: Romeo and Juliet, run head first into each situation they face, rarely giving a thought about what they are about to do. By reading the play it becomes apparent that teens have always acted in an unregarding manner, not just in modern times. …show more content…
Initially, Romeo meets Juliet at her family's party in which they exchange a conversation and a kiss. Romeo secretly visits Juliet after the party and in the very night that they met, Juliet suggests to Romeo “If that thy [Romeo] bent of love be honorable,/ Thy [Romeo] purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow,” (Shakespeare Ⅱ.ⅱ, l 150-151). Juliet proposes the idea of the two of them getting married notwithstanding the fact that they just met that same day. Furthermore, before the party, Romeo was rejected by another woman and could not get her name or beauty out of his head, until he met Juliet later in the day. The two act extremely reckless, for they jumped into a relationship after just meeting one another. Additionally, Critics have pointed out that “Romeo's return to Verona upon receiving the information of Juliet's death also demonstrates his impulsive nature” (Carter). In the final act of the play, Juliet drank a vial of liquid that made it seem that she was deceased, so she could escape marriage to another man. This plan did not work out because when Romeo hears of her apparent death, he makes a rash decision to buy a vial of poison and drink it at Juliet’s grave where he believes she is actually dead. They end up both taking their lives in a series of other foolish efforts that occur in the final scene. Romeo and Juliet’s rushed relationship and impulsive …show more content…
Typical risky behavior that teens get involved in is the use of alcohol and drugs which could be “the outcome of difficult lives or exposure to family conflict or indulgence, where the teen takes to the substance to self-medicate” (Direnfield). Many teens may not recognize the danger in using such products because of their lack of knowledge as an adolescent. Also, they may be provoked to start using drugs and alcohol because of harsh conditions or strenuous situations that they may be experiencing at their age. Teens may also be inspired to do risky actions such as trespassing, shoplifting, or sneaking into restricted areas or activities; these behaviors can lead to legal repercussions such as jail time. Studies even show that 88% of criminal arrests are produced by those ages 12-20. Not all teens do participate in such actions, but it is safe to say that a large quantity do. The reason for why teens act more reckless than most other age groups is because “the prefrontal cortex, responsible for judgment and impulse control, matures last” and “isn't ‘done’ until the early 20s--and sometimes even later in men” (Shute). Teenagers do not have a fully mature brain which makes their sense of reasoning less developed and allows them to make more foolish decisions than most people of older age. Due to a higher risk of incautious actions amid adolescence many end
Teens today are also influenced by their peers on their actions. In the article “Peer Pressure” it says, “The term “peer pressure” refers to any type of influence that your friends may have over you. Many times, teens are influenced by their peers to do things that result in negative consequences. This is negative peer pressure. Specifically, negative peer pressure refers to activities such as using drugs, alcohol, or cigarettes; vandalizing property; using violence against others; having sex before you are ready or having unsafe sex; stealing; or driving drunk” (Feder).

Young Love and its Impulsive Effects Yann Martel, a Canadian author, once said, “Quickly you make rash decisions. You dismiss your last allies: hope and trust. There you've defeated yourself. Fear, which is but an impression, has triumphed over you”.
Most teenagers are impulsive and often demonstrate this trait through rebellious behavior. How many teenagers that you know would kill for their love? William Shakespeare discusses this subject in Romeo and Juliet. Romeo and Juliet face a difficult situation as they are born into feuding families and are supposed to dislike each other. As a result, their love will be impossible to maintain even though they try their hardest.
Shakespeare wrote very famous literature in the 1500’s that influenced our language and never ceases to amaze our culture, yet the stories are still timeless. His characters and personalities used in his stories so long ago are still relevant and can be applied to times today, nearly five hundred and sixteen years later. One of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies is Romeo and Juliet, and he clearly demonstrates the relevant human fault of impulsiveness through his character the Friar Laurence and two very differing sides of Romeo Montague. Friar Laurence is a very impulsive character throughout his play, in situations such as the bond of marriage and his plan towards Juliet Capulet.

Romeo and Juliet and the Teenage Brain There are many stereotypes regarding teenagers. One of these stereotypes is that they are always getting into trouble because of the decisions they are making. A famous example is the play, Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet are from rivaling families, the Montagues and the Capulets. They fell in love and had to hide this from their parents.
In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, it is evident that many of the characters show rash and impetuous behaviour. One such character is Tybalt. Although Tybalt displayed his rash and impetuous tendencies throughout the entirety of the play, it is one of his actions in particular that affects the rest of the play more so than any other - Mercutio's murder. When Tybalt killed Mercutio, it caused Romeo’s banishment, Capulet to try to force Juliet into marrying Paris, and the eventual death of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo’s banishment has a direct cause, that of which is Tybalt’s murder of Mercutio.
Have you ever experienced remorse for a choice that you had made? That could be because you acted quickly and relied on your emotions to guide you, which is just what happened in the tragic story of Romeo and Juliet. Impulsiveness can leave a long lasting, or, in Romeo and Juliet’s case, a permanent consequences. Romeo and Juliet made the ultimate rash decision; they took their own lives out of love for each other. They didn’t really think much about it beforehand.
While Romeo was known for his impulsiveness, it didn 't go to help him out later on. Romeo had been convinced to sneak into the Capulet 's party, and would then lock eyes with a girl that he will forever be in love with. An analysis of Romeo’s character in the play Romeo and Juliet, reveals that his fatal flaw was his impulsiveness due to him falling in love and marrying Juliet, becoming a murder after he had killed Tybalt and Paris, and him killing himself. One reason why Romeo was impulsive was because he had fallen in love with Juliet at first sight.
One of the most famous plays in history, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, helps portray the idea that the impulsiveness of youth can have dire consequences. Romeo is probably the most impulsive character in the story. He fell in love with a woman named Rosaline (Shakespeare 813) who was a nun. The issue there is clear, but Romeo was still young and was blinded from seeing the obvious: that their love will never be. Maybe if Romeo had been older than 17, he wouldn’t have continually sobbed about a girl that would never be his.
Do you believe in love at first sight? Romeo and Juliet did and it lead to both of their deaths. Romeo believed that he was in love, a feeling he had never truly felt before. As a young teen, you could expect that he would make some irrational decisions, but nothing like what he did to be with who he believed to be his true love. Romeo Montague 's fatal flaw was his impulsiveness due to falling in love and marry Juliet, becoming a murderer, and taking his own life .
In Romeo and Juliet, an excerpt from Act 1 Scene 5, Shakespeare highlights the impetuousness of youth compared to people of old age. But, as a reader, we all know they die in the end.
It seems like every time my little brother gets home from school, I hear about students getting caught vaping and smoking in the bathrooms, in the student parking lot and other places. I also hear about how someone is pregnant, and I find that vaping, pregnancy, and drinking are major issues among other things. Most of these problems come from uninvolved parents in their teenager’s life. Teens’ who are unsupervised tend to make wrong and dangerous decisions and that results in Teen drug use, Drinking, Pregnancy. Teens brains aren’t fully developed, so when the teen makes the “choice” to use drugs, drink, or have sex they think they know what they are doing, but they don’t because the brain isn’t developed enough to make such choices so thinking you know what your doing
