Innovation can be defined as a new idea that is turned into a new product or service in order to create value for customers and capture value from it. According to Rothwell and Gardiner (1985), innovation is not only about the commercialization of radically new and technologically advanced products but it also implies significantly small but useful improvement in the technological know-how. So based on the degree of the product or service novelty, innovation can be either incremental or radical. What makes this game so innovative as compared to other games is the advanced technology it uses that allows users to interact with the real world when chasing Pokémon. Users play Pokémon Go everywhere, in houses, in the streets, in schools, parks, even workplaces and so on. This game has beaten candy crush record in the number of daily users as well as some other social media. An example of incremental innovation is WhatsApp. This choice of example is motivated by the fact that text messaging apps have changed the way people communicate and one of the highest tools for communication presently is clearly WhatsApp. WhatsApp is a text-messaging app for mobile phones that is on the way to replace the traditional SMS service. It allows users to send text messages, audio calls, share pictures and videos, group chat, short audio messages, share documents, and without any limit. WhatsApp has been going through incremental innovation since its creation in 2009, because when WhatsApp was firstly created it did not have all these features. Users could only send text messages, but later they added pictures and video sharing, audio calls, group chat and so on. A PC and desktop version has also been created not long ago. This can be really useful when moving from high uncertainty to high resource commitment. Another challenge that organizational members face in radical innovation is the complexity of the new environment and the lack of resources and competencies to handle it. Open innovation can help in this case where high uncertainty exist and where high transaction costs are involved in new technology purchase.
