In “The Scarlet Ibis”, Hurst uses the theme of peer pressure to argue that the normative conformity with one’s reputation leads to death. In providing rationale for his brother, Doodle, the narrator exclaims “It was bad enough having an invalid brother, but having one who possibly was not all there was unbearable, so I began to make plans to kill him… (Hurst 176). The narrator statement explains his embarrassment of having a handicapped brother. The narrator didn’t get the normal brother with whom he could share his love of the outdoors. When he finds out he has an “invalid brother” he feels it's “unbearable”.
Doodle, the younger brother is very attached to Brother, his older brother, Brother is embarrassed of Doodle because has physical and mental problems that keep him from doing stuff that “normal” people can do. Brothers pride destroyed his relationship with Doodle by abusing Doodle, Forcing Doodle to learn to walk and swim when he didn’t feel safe doing so, and doing something that the doctor had said not to do, killing Doodle.

In addition, in his childhood, due to his dark skin, he was never been accepted by his adobpted family. He was also called the “gipsy”, “wicked boy”, and “villian”. His growing of selfishness and dignify can define his class has been totally changed. However, Heathcliff’s violent acts, and threats support the fact that he can be a real beast.
The brother is to blame for doodles death. Doodle was a disabled young child with a selfish brother that only looks out for himself. His brother was ashamed to be with or around him. One of the biggest reasons wanted him dead is because he was embarrassed to be around him. The three reasons I believe that the brother wanted to kill doodle was he was embarrassed, he pushed him to hard, and he was selfish.
