Jesuit Priest Henry Garnet concealed knowledge of the conspiracy and became the great "equivocator" before he was hanged. Father Garnet wrote A Treatise of Equivocation to tell Catholics how to conceal their faith (Trial). Shakespeare alludes to Father Garnet in Macbeth with the Porter. The Porter drunkenly speaks of the people who will greet you at the gates of hell, "Faith, here's an equivocator/that could swear in both the scales against either scale..." (Shakespeare II.ii. 7-8) Father Garnet also insisted he lied for the conspirators for God's sake, to which the Porter speaks of also in Macbeth (Huntley). The Porter describes the equivocator, "Who committed treason enough for God's sake, yet could not equivocate to heaven.
School Wide Writing Project Former superintendent, Lawrence B. Shlack argues in his article, Not Going to College is a Viable Option, that too many students believe that going to college is the only option after high school in order to be successful. The main purpose of this article is to convince students to be less narrow-minded on the topic of post-high school decisions and effectively provides the reasoning behind his logic and provides alternatives. As a retired superintendent, Schlack proves that he has sufficient credibility and knowledge of high school students and what most of them are thinking. The use of pathos and ethos combined with his credibility appeals to the readers strongly by making the article relatable for most high schoolers. Knowledge and credibility on the topic along with emotional and logical appeals made Schlack’s article’s persuasion effective.
Through the article she explains how a hookup has changed and how it has to stop because of it affecting the way teenagers see a relationship. Freitas uses many persuasive appeals and rhetorical strategies to persuade effectively on these arguments. By using these rhetorical devices she is able to keep the readers hooked into the argument. One example of a persuasive appeal and rhetorical strategy she uses is logos and exemplification because of her providing statistics and facts from surveys. Statistics from the article provide more compelling information because they provide a representative sample of teenagers who hold certain beliefs about hookup culture.
Some members of the church used this power to influence others to follow the rules of Catholicism; however there was a growing number of church members who were corrupt. Writers such as Chaucer, used their works to express the concern for the rise of corruption. In order to express these thoughts clearly, Chaucer used satire to symbolize the actions of the church. The monk and the parson can be interpreted as symbols of the Catholic Church members’ views during the medieval period: The monk symbolized the church members who disregarded the inculcation of Catholic values, and the parson symbolized the more orthodox members of the church. Chaucer used the same standards to criticize both characters in the prologue of tales.

The Conversion of Clovis Clovis, aka Chlodovocar or Louis, was converted into Roman Catholicism Christianity in 496 A.D. The conversion of Clovis, a former heathen and the founder of the Frankish power, was an important historical event. If by chance Chlodovocar, King of the Franks had accepted to become an Arian heretic like the other kings of the surrounding barbarian kingdoms, he would have lost favor with his mostly roman subjects (Denis 1). There are two accounts of the conversion of the king because it is believed the story of his conversion gave the devout raconteur an opening for many enlightening yarns. Two of these pious storytellers are St. Denis and Gregory of Tours.

Along with the religious reformers, Henry VIII played an important role in the rise of Protestants due to the unwanted marriage with his wife, Catherine of Aragon that created a new religion. During the 16th century, the Pope would not grant the king a divorce to his wife that couldn’t produce more generations of royalty, so the Henry VIII broke away from the Catholic Church to have a new religion called Anglican. In 1534, the Act of Supremacy was granted to the king and it gave the supreme head title to King Henry VIII, it gave him authority and profits that he wouldn 't have been granted if the Protestant Reformation would not have sparked breaking away from the Catholic Church. Therefore, the Catholic Church slowly started to lose their authority of the Europe population because of the increase of Protestants and wanting freedom from the controlling church. Due to the division of the Catholic Church, religious wars were happening in Europe causing tension between Catholics and Protestants.
