Stefan Armour Ms.LaVoie 2/26/23 English 9 Hrns Mayella was evil because she knew right from wrong and she still had a choice about her decisions. First,Mayella choose to kiss Tom Robinson no-one forced her.“Kiss Me Back Nigger”,This quote explans how Mayella was evil because she knew the consequences of doing anything with Tom Robinson in the segregated town of Maycomb.Mayella had a choice weather or not to call Tom inside the house to “bust down the chifferobe”.She also let her desires cloud her thinking which in the end resulted in her breaking the moral code.In result of mayella breaking the code she also ended up ruining a innocent life. This evidence supports my thesis because Mayella knew this want the right thing to do and she did it anyways which makes her evil. …show more content…
I mean yes I do, he hit me.”,This evidence supports my thesis because not only did Mayella accuse Tom of rape to save her and her fathers skin.Mayella then goes on to lie in court with her hand already touching the bible.Mayella knows that with her accusing Tom Robinson will not only ruin his life but will also affect those around him like Tom’s wife and kids. There could of been many differnet outcomes of Mayella’s choice at that moment but she lied in court which was the worst one. This connets to my thesis because Mayella knew that by lying on Tom she would jeopardize his innocence and that makes her a evil person for doing wrong knowing there would be
She wanted to do to things with Tom and tempted him to do them. Tom fell into Mayella’s trap while trying to help her out. “She was white and she tempted a Negro. She did something that in our society is unspeakable: she kissed a black man. Not an old Uncle, but a strong Negro man.
Admittedly, she is a young girl who doesn’t know what a friend is, and had been placed under responsibility for her younger siblings and caring for the house her whole life. Although she is lying with intent to cover for her father, she may not know what else she could have done because of the two to three years of education she received. However, Mayella should have had the whole image of what she was doing in her mind. It is true that Mayella has never had much of a social life, but because her father implied what was wrong with her physically, she could have learned what was right. Placing the blame on a man who could easily be prosecuted for her injuries is something that can not be pitied and sympathized
The firm declaration of Mayella denying that her father abuses her after claiming he can be intolerable while drunk and her hesitant answer gives us the clear conclusion that Mayella is being abused by her father and her injuries and rape were done not by Tom Robinson but by Mr. Ewell
She came from a very traumatic background with a passed mother, seven useless siblings, and a father who abuses her. Her father has very immense power over Mayella and she does all of the chores in the yard. She is a very hard-working young woman and tries her best to impress her father. Mayella was completely cut out of the real world and did not even comprehend the thought of kissing and hugging Tom. Mayella was seeking attention and possibly affection because it was never given to her by her father.
pg 272 This quote is significant because it testifies that Mayella has falsely accuse Tom of raping her to protect her from embarrassment. Furthermore, it reveals Mayella’s true character as one who believe her public reputation holds more significance than the truth. One may claim that she had only lied the court to protect herself from her abusive father who may have beaten her had she told the truth. Though this is true, it is against the law to lie under oath in a courtroom, by revealing the truth she may have faced some consequences however her actions deserve
Not only did she not get her desired way, but she was probably going to face further consequences from the law after lying in court Atticus finally knows the full truth about what happened, so decides to expose Mayella of her lies and show everyone that Tom is
Evidence of this was when the narrator said “Tom Robinson was probably the only person ever decent to her” (219). Mayella was hated by almost everyone, so when Tom Robinson was helping her she had wanted to be with him. This is proof that the actions of people can have a negative effect on others because shortly after Mayella had screamed very loudly, which had led to her father charging Tom with raping his daughter even though evidentially he didn’t do/try anything with/to her. He was wrongly accused of raping her just because he’s a black
Then some people thought that Tom was innocent but the judge decided to make Tom go to prison. In the book it said that Mayella hugged and kissed Tom on the cheek. From this I can infer that Mayella is desperate and can get away with this because Tom Robinson is a black person. This reminds me of a couple southern movies I’ve watched where black people are always the first to suspect because of their color. Tom Robinson on trial for his life said Bob Ewell yelled “whore I’ll kill you” when he saw Mayella kiss Tom from the window.
Mayella was extremely bold and showed so much courage for her age, even to the point of saying “I got somethin’ to say an’ then I ain’t gonna say no more. That person yonder took advantage of me.” By saying this at such a young age shows how old Myellais and possibly the type of childhood she had, Bob Ewell treats her poorly and I feel bad for all the things she has to go through with her dad. Mayella's next quote shows that this may be fake and she could feel slightly bad for Tom, Mayella says this “I don't recollect if he hit me. I mean yes I do, he hit me.”
Mayella said ¨ So he come in the yard´an I went into the house to get the nickel and I turned around an fore I knew it he was on me¨(Lee 205). This evidence shows Mayella is guilty because Tom was helping her with the thing she asked him to do and he didn't jump on her. Mayella also said ¨
What many people don’t realize is how much of a mockingbird Mayella is. The reader follows only a small portion of Mayella’s story, but it is substantial enough for the reader to identify her as a victim of abuse. Mayella was abused by her father throughout her life and becomes manipulated to pin the blame for her own actions on the innocent. It becomes a chain reaction of sorts. Though Mayella isn’t described in vivid detail, she was an influential character in the book as well as a victim of the evil of Maycomb.
“Atticus was quietly building up before the jury a picture of the Ewells’ home life… and there was a strong suspicion that Papa drank it up anyway.” (Narrator 244). Atticus portrays Mayella’s life at home, he tries to get the jury to feel sorry for her which helped him to be successful in the trial. Since Atticus was acting so nice and acting like he relates to Mayella, she eventually let her guard down and got cornered by Atticus. Atticus “trapped” Mayella, and the only reason he was successful in doing so was because of his solicitude.
First, she had to make up a story about Tom Robinson because she had kissed a black man, which was frowned upon for a white woman to do. “She was white and she tempted a Negro. She did something that in our society in unspeakable: she kissed a black man”(272). Mayella is also used as an example when she convinces the jury to convict an innocent black man because of Southern Womanhood. “That n***** took advantage of me, an’ if you fine fancy gentlemen don’t wanna do nothin’ about it then you’re all yellow stinkin’ cowards, stinkin’ cowards, the lot of you”(251).
Although due to being a poor, uneducated woman whom is treated like an object, Mayella is not a powerful character. For 19 years of Mayella’s life she has been
Her desires were stronger than the code she was breaking. When she tried to put the evidence of her offense away, instead of being honest, she had put a man’s life in danger. However, Mayella is not a criminal. She is simply a woman who carries a heavy burden with no one to support or respect her. Mayella is a victim of abuse and
