There are many circumstances in this world that make humans happy. Likewise, there are many circumstances in this world that can make us sad, upset, or even angry. Many people view negative emotions as being a bad experience, but, good things can come out of experiencing negative emotions. Even though positive emotions are directly related to a healthy mental state, it is also very important for humans to experience negative emotions as well. Experiencing negative emotions is very important because one cannot truly appreciate happiness if there is no knowledge of what any other emotions feel like. Memory of happy moments will then stimulate motivation to get back to a mental state of happiness even without the presence of that loved one. Reminiscing on happy moments during a sad time can also bring positive moments and along with a positive mindset. Martin Seligman says, “meaning and engagement lead to happiness.” This shows that engagement and spending times with loved ones does create happy moments. Sadly, eventually a moment of nostalgia will come that may cause you to feel a sense of melancholy, but will also bring back all of the happy moments. Sometimes, in life people come to a point where everything seems to be going wrong and failing. When that all time low comes, the ease of remembering happy times will also arrive. In The New Science of Happiness, Wallis suggests “taking mental photographs of pleasurable moments to review in less happy times”(Wallis 4). Wallis also explains “Pay close attention to momentary pleasures”(Wallis 4). Through this, Wallis is explaining to the reader that a certain moment that feels like a tough time, causes remembrance and appreciation of better and happier times.
